- SL025-022: Megalithic tomb - unclassified, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CSL025-022----. At the foot of a NW-facing slope and close to a stream in damp pasture. The structure is damaged and difficult to interpret. The main feature is an uphill- and E-facing chamber (L 4m; Wth c. 2m) with its back to the stream. A large stone (H c. 1.5m) forms each side and it is closed by an inset backstone (L 1.8m; min. T 0.3m; H 1.4m), the jagged top of which indicates it has been broken. In front of the northern sidestone there is the stump of another orthostat (L 1.6m; min. H 1.7m) possibly a broken portal-stone. Part of its detached upper portion lies at the front of the chamber. Some low stones just N of the stump of this orthostat are part of an old field fence. A large flat slab (4m x 3m; T 0.4m), a displaced roofstone, leans against the outer face of the southern sidestone. Both sidestones lean to the S and both are split. There is considerable grass-grown fill in the chamber. The tomb must remain unclassified but its location, facing uphill away from a stream, the use of a single large stone for each side of the chamber, and the presence of a great roofstone would suggest it may be a ruined portal-tomb. Five metres W of the chamber there is a large prostrate slab (2.45m x 2.5m; T 0.4m), its W end raised clear of the ground where it rests on a set stone (L 1.1m; H 0.55m; T 0.15m). There are other partly buried slabs here. The indications are that this may have been some form of chamber. Some 7m to the N there is another large prostrate slab (4m x 2.4m; max. T 0.4m). In pasture, near the base of a S-facing slope. A slightly raised circular area (diam. c. 30m) enclosed by an earthen bank incorporating some stones. The bank (Wth 2.8m; int. H 1.95m; ext. H 0.5m) is best evident along the N arc while along the S arc it is low internally but substantial (ext. H 2.8m) externally. The N half of the interior is level and, while the S portion is raised to compensate for the hillslope, it retains a slope down to S. In the centre at the break of slope is a large horizontal slab, probably a lintel from a possible souterrain (SL025-023001-). In a rath (SL025-023----). There is a local tradition of a souterrain in the interior of the rath. A horizontal slab, evident in the centre of interior, may be a roof lintel of a souterrain chamber. In pasture, at the base of an E-facing slope. The rath is indicated on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as an embanked circular area (diam. c. 25m) and on the 1914 OS 6-inch map as a circular area, open to N. The E half of the rath is now truncated by a N-S road. There is an arc of an earthen bank (Wth 2.3m; int. H 0.9m; ext. H 1.1m) SW-WNW, c. 6.3m W of the road, and another short section of bank at NW, obscured by overgrowth. Immediately to S of the latter section of bank is a field boundary which extends westwards from the road. Another rath (SL025-031----) is c. 60m to SSW. In pasture, near the base of a SE-facing slope and c. 30m N of the Owenboy River. A raised roughly oval area (25.8m N-S; 29m E-W) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 4.2m; int. H 1m; ext. H 1.5m) which is low or levelled E-S. There is a possible entrance (Wth 1.2m) at ENE, the N face of which is marked by a large stone, and a gap (Wth 1.6m) at N. A band (Wth 2m) of irises and lush grass is evident SW-NW and may indicate a silted-up external fosse. A field boundary, indicated on the 1914 OS 6-inch map abutting the rath at SSW, has been removed. The broad external slope of the bank here may be the result of piling field boundary material against the bank. The interior slopes down to SE. A level area (c. 11.6m E-W) in the SW quadrant is defined on the E side by a scarp (H 0.7m) which extends c. 6m N from the bank at S. The bank and the interior are covered in long grass. Another rath (SL025-030----) is c. 60m to NNE.
