In rough grazing, on a ridge of high ground which slopes down immediately to W and more gently to E. A raised circular area (diam. 29m) defined by a scarp (H 0.4m) and an external fosse (Wth 1.8m; D 0.5m). There is a gap at W with a causeway (Wth 6m) across the fosse. The interior is grass-covered. There is a possible souterrain (SL027-028002-) in the E half. The perimeter of the rath is covered with overgrowth, especially along the E arc. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). In the E half of the interior of a rath (SL027-028001-), c. 6m from the edge of the scarp. A depression (Wth c. 2m; D 0.6m), infilled with a large slab and smaller stones, may indicate a collapsed souterrain chamber. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). According to Wood-Martin (1892, 363-4), the 'Summaghan stones' comprised seven stones that were used for the purpose of cursing and together with a similar set of stones at Barroe (SL021-096----) in Lavally townland were the 'special heritage of the Summaghan family'. The ceremony performed at the stones 'appears to have closely resembled that observed on Inismurray' and in addition required the postulant to be 'barefooted and bareheaded' (ibid.). Wood-Martin also recorded the tradition that the stones were once cast into the neighbouring lake [Castle Lough?], yet were found next morning in their accustomed place and that one mode of averting the curse was for the person against whom 'the stones were turned' to have a grave dug, to lie in it and have three shovelfuls of earth cast over him while the gravediggers recited certain rhymes (ibid.). The stones were already removed in Wood-Martin's time and now only a small circular cairn of stones (diam. 4m; H 1m), probably a field-clearance cairn, and a linear bank of earth and stones (8m N-S; 4m E-W) 2m to E are evident at the site. A circular enclosure (SL027-029002-) lies downslope to NE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). On a steep N-facing slope and downslope from the site of the Sumaghan Stones (SL027-029001-). A circular area (int. diam. 24m E-W) enclosed by an earth and stone bank and an external fosse (Wth 1.6m; D 0.5m). The bank (Wth 2m; int. H 1.6m; ext. H 1.4m) is steep-sided and narrow. The S half of the interior slopes down steeply to N while the N half is level. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). On a low rise in low-lying pasture; the ground rises gradually to W. A raised steep-sided oval area (27.5m N-S; 24m E-W) defined N-NE by an earth and stone bank and elsewhere by a scarp (H 1.2m). The bank (Wth 3m; int. H 0.7m; ext. H 0.8m) has internal kerbing and is faced with large stones externally. The perimeter of the rath is overgrown with hawthorn bushes. The interior is mostly grass-covered with some overgrowth. Trees are indicated within the interior on the 1838 OS 6-inch map. There is a circular enclosure (SL027-046----) c. 100m to SSE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). On a low ridge, in generally low-lying rough grazing. A circular area (diam. 16m) enclosed by an earthen bank (Wth 1.5m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 1.2m), eroded in places. Boggy ground immediately outside the bank along the W arc may indicate a silted-up fosse. There is a road immediately to S and E and a rath (SL027-045----) c. 100m to NNW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). On a rise, in undulating rough grazing. A raised circular area (diam. 24m) enclosed by two banks and an intervening fosse. The inner bank (Wth 3.8m; int. H 0.9; ext. H 1.4m) consists of earth and stone with internal stone-facing. The intervening fosse (Wth 3.6m; D 0.6m) is evident all round. A wide berm (Wth 5.6m) separates the fosse and outer bank (Wth 2m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 0.5m). The berm and the outer bank are truncated NNW-NNE by an E-W field boundary. There are gaps in the outer bank at E and NW. A band of boggy ground and rushes (Wth 1.5m), evident only outside the outer bank at SE, may indicate a silted-up outer fosse. Overgrowth covers the perimeter of the rath and partially covers the interior. In rough grazing, on top of a ridge. A raised circular area (diam. 23m) enclosed by two earthen banks and an intervening fosse. The inner bank (Wth 4.2m; int. H 0.7m; ext. H 1.5m) has an internal stone kerb. The fosse is widest at N (Wth 5.4m) and narrowest at E (Wth 3m). The outer bank (Wth 3m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.8m) is partially overgrown with gorse. The interior is covered with rushes. This rath is possibly one of the two forts, named 'Mullaghmore Fort' and 'Lisnaspeenoge Fort' respectively, which were recorded in 1836 in the S side of Ballysumaghan townland (OSNB vol. 1, 157). In forest plantation, on a W-facing slope just below the summit of a ridge. A slightly raised circular area (diam. c. 25m) enclosed by an earthen bank (Wth 3m; int. H 1m; ext. Deciduous trees have recently been planted around the rath and conifers have been planted elsewhere in the field. The rath is possibly one of the two forts, named 'Mullaghmore Fort' and 'Lisnaspeenoge Fort' respectively, which were recorded in 1836 in the S side of Ballysumaghan townland (OSNB vol. 1, 157).
