The outline of circular area (diam. c. 30m N-S; c. 37m E-W) defined by a scarp (H 1.2m) along the E arc but barely discernible elsewhere. A house with outbuildings and a garden were built c. 1940 on the area. This possible rath is indicated on the 1914 OS 6-inch map as a raised semicircular area, defined by a scarp NNW-SW, located at the junction of two roads and in the corner of a wooded area on the W side of Banada Abbey (SL037-068001-) demesne. On a terrace, immediately overlooking the W bank of the river Moy, c. 350m SW of Banada abbey (SL037-068001-). The building marked 'Friary' (but not in Old English script, denoting an antiquity) on the 1838 OS 6-inch map is a two-storey rectangular structure (15.55m NW-SE; 6.4m NE-SW) of 19th-century appearance. In the adjacent garden are three blocks of punch-dressed and chamfered limestone; these architectural fragments probably derive from the nearby abbey (SL037-068001-). On the W bank of the River Moy; at the E end of Banada graveyard (SL037-068005-), directly on top of a steep slope rising from the bank of the river. Only the E end of the church of this Augustinian foundation stands though a much-greater part of the complex stood until 1897 (Harbison 2002, 92-5). The surviving structure consists of the E end of the N (int. L 7.1m) and S walls (int. L 10.15m) of the chancel and the base of the E end-wall (int. L 6.55m) (see plan Lynn 1985-6, 96). These are built of uncoursed limestone in a lime mortar; the surviving walls are heavily enveloped by ivy. The N wall is featureless save for a broken window ope. A 15th-century 'relief carving of human head with elaborate head dress' (SL037-068006-) (ibid., 98), formerly lying in the N half of the graveyard, has been built into its internal wall-face. Externally along the base of the wall is the battered face of 'coarser, random rubble masonry' which Lynn (ibid.) interpreted as the remains of a 13th-century castle (SL037-06804-). Near the E end of the S wall is a two-seater sedilia. The front elevation (see sketch in Lynn 1985-6, 96) consists of two round arches rising from a central twisted column and a pilaster at either end (pilaster to E is missing). These have plain octagonal bases and capitals. Over each is an ogee hood rising to a moulded finial, and there are stylised floral mouldings set on the shoulders of the hood. A short distance W of the sedilia is a doorway facing into the church; the ground level here is halfway up its jambs. The doorway has a two-centred pointed arch. It leads to a short mural passage which is very ruined but has an opening on its W side leading to the base of a spiral stairs. The stairs, which rises clockwise, is lit by a small slit window looking into the choir. The S wall runs a short distance further W before breaking off. Lying within the graveyard are many carved limestone blocks derived from the friary. These include the central piece of a cusped ogee-headed window light, the side of a cusped round-arched window-head, and a number of chamfered blocks which were probably window-light jambs. Also in the graveyard are two gutter-stones from the wall-walk of the church, which were reused as grave-markers. There are some further chamfered blocks (SL037-067----) in a garden 350m to the SW. A drawing of the ruin in 1779 (Harbison 2002, figs. 71 and 72) shows the that the building had a tower of 15th-century form, slim in profile and built of coursed ashlar. This Augustinian foundation was established in 1423 by Donnchadh O'Hara (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 296; Ó Muraíle 2002, 240, n. 27); the surviving architectural features confirm the 15th-century date. A bridge (SL037-068007-) over the river Moy is indicated on the Down Survey (1655-6) map of County Sligo in the vicinity of this friary. Lynn (1985-6, 95-8) suggested than the battered plinth (H 1.5m) of coursed limestone under the N chancel wall of Banada Abbey (SL037-068001-) is the remains of a mid-13th-century castle erected by Maurice Fitzgerald. Apart from being slightly battered, the plinth shows no other 'castle' features. Lynn's suggestion that it is unusual to find the E end of such a church built on steeply sloping ground can be countered by sites such as Buttevant (Power et al. 2000, Inv. no. 14871) and Timoleague (Power et al. 1992, Inv. no. 3065) in county Cork. A roughly rectangular graveyard (c. 80m ESE-WNW; c. 55m SSW-NNE) enclosed on the S, W and N sides by a stone wall and defined on the E side by a steep slope down to the river. The ruins of an Augustinian friary (SL037-068001-) are at the E side. There are many 18th- and 19th-century headstones and crosses, the earliest noted was dated 1775. Amongst the grave-markers are numerous architectural pieces derived from the friary, and the area immediately around the ruin is strewn with rubble, broken headstones and tomb surrounds. The graveyard has recently been partially cleared of overgrowth. The enclosed burial ground for the nearby convent of the Sisters of Charity of Banada Abbey, who are associated with Banada since the 1860s (McDonnell-Garvey 1999/2000, 9-11), is at the S side of the graveyard. In rough pasture, on a gentle NW-facing slope overlooking the River Moy to NW. An oval area (32.6m NE-SW; 20.4m NW-SE) is defined by a low bank (Wth 2m; int. H 0.25m; ext. H 0.55m) with an external fosse (Wth 1.7m; D 0.4m) NE-SE and elsewhere by a scarp (H 0.9m) with a low internal rim and a shallow external depression (D 0.2m). The W portion of the interior is raised to compensate for the hillslope. The level interior is bisected NE of centre by a low sod-covered bank (Wth 1.2m; H 0.3m) on a NW-SE axis; on the NE side of this bank are traces of cultivation ridges. Five mature beech trees are close to or on the enclosing bank and a few hawthorn bushes and brambles are scattered around the perimeter. In pasture, on a terrace overlooking the River Moy to N. This possible rath is indicated on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as an oval embanked area (40m N-S; 30m E-W) with a limekiln abutting the external face of the bank at SW. The remains consist of a grass-covered D-shaped area (40m NE-SW; 30m NW-SE) defined by a flat-bottomed fosse (Wth 6.6m; D 0.95m) along the SW and W arcs and by a scarp (H 1.9m) elsewhere. The scarp is low along the S arc (H 0.2m). There is a disused quarry on the E edge of this possible rath. Attached six-bay single-storey rendered former Catholic chapel, built c. 1890, now redundant. Attached at east to convent buildings. Three-bay single-storey pitched roof sacristy to east end of north elevation, single-bay single-storey porch to north elevation in line with and gable-fronted to west elevation, two-storey link building to south-east. Pitched slate roofs with fish-scale banding, clay ridge tiles, moulded cast-iron gutters on painted timber fascia on exposed rafter ends. Tall unpainted smooth-rendered square chimney to east of vestry. Unpainted smooth-rendered walling. Lancet window openings, hood mouldings with ivy motif label stops, splayed flush sills, painted plain-glazed timber sash windows with coloured glass margins, wrought-iron window guards with fleur-de-lys finials. Pointed-arched door opening, painted vertically-sheeted timber door. Part of a complex of convent buildings, landscaped grounds to west.

Pitched slate roofs, bank plain gabled dormers to west elevation of central section, corresponding Dutch gables to east elevation, clay ridge tiles, unpainted smooth-rendered corbelled chimneystacks with yellow clay pots, ashlar stone verges, simple stone crosses at apexes, half-round cast-iron gutters on eaves corbel course. Grass lawns, gravelled paths, nineteenth and twentieth century graves marked by low stone plinths with several engraved and carved Celtic crosses. Rubble stone, ivy-covered boundary walls to east, north and west. Fronts to main road.

Square-headed window openings, painted moulded architraves with square corner blocks at heads to main building, painted stone sills, painted two-over-two timber sash windows.
