Situated in a slight hollow in gently undulating sand dunes which rise to the N to the cliff edge. The monument consists of a pair of fine grained sandstone slabs set on edge and orientated NNW-SSE.. The northernmost stone (average L 1.25m; H 1.05m; T 0.2m) is rectangular in shape and is laid on its long edge. The southernmost stone (L 0.65m; H 0.85m if erect; T 0.24m) is roughly triangular in shape: it is 1.05m SSE of its counterpart and leans markedly to the N. Both stones have rounded corners and very smooth surfaces. There are no visible markings on either stone. Without doubt this is the same monument as that described and illustrated by Wood-Martin (1888, 154-5). His sketch and plan shows a third low stone standing c. 1.4m to the W of and parallel with the northernmost stone (pers. comm. M.A. Timoney): the dimensions of the stone are not recorded and it is no longer visible. A low set stone (SL003-042----) stands 32m W of this monument. The relationship, if any, to this monument is unknown but it may be an outlier. Timoney (2016, 14) suggests that this might be remains of a 'Four-poster' type monument. Situated on a slight rise in gently undulating sand dune pasture. Not indicated on any edition of the OS 6-inch map. The account of the discovery of this burial is recorded in a letter to the Keeper of Irish Antiquities at the National Museum of Ireland, dated 14 August 1944, from the Garda Superintendent at Sligo. The letters records the following: 'I beg to inform you that while digging trenches in connection with Military exercises near the seashore at Bunduff, Cliffoney, one of the party . . . came upon a human skeleton. It was enclosed in a stone grave, the bottom, sides and top of which was made of 3/4 inch stone slabs, and the head and foot of thick square stones. The stone slabs forming the sides and roof of this grave were broken in places. Nothing was found in the grave except human remains. It was 2 1/2 foot from the surface of the earth. The coroner . . . was informed and he decided not to hold an inquest.' The bones were packed in a wooden box and forwarded to the National Museum. Further correspondence in the National Museum files dated 1948 records that the 'burial consited of an inhumation of a bdy which lay in a contracted positon on it side in the a cist 3 foot x 2 foot x 1 foot deep, lying 2 foot below the surface.' (NMI Topographical files). The exact location of this cist is unknown as the copy of the surviving copy of the map from 1944 on file in the National Museum is not of sufficient scale to enable the precise position to be plotted with an degree of confidence. In consequence, the location recorded for this record must be considered as indicative only. There is no visible evidence of the 'trenches' referred to in the above correspondence. There is a depression (L E-W 3m; Wth top N-S 1.3m; Wth base 0.55m; D 0.7m) in the sand hill near the shore c. 10m S of a vertical 25m high, N-facing, E-W orientated sea cliff which perhaps might be the site of this burial. The current coordinates are for this location. The grave has been tentatively dated to the early medieval period. (Cahill and Sikora 2011, Vol. 2, 167-8). A souterrain (SL003-019002-), from which fragment of a decorated rotary quern (SL003-019003-) was identified, was discovered at or in proximity to this monument in 1954 (SMR file). Not indicated on any edition of the OS 6-inch map. A souterrain was discovered in 1954 at or in proximity to a possible levelled cashel (SL003-019001-). The monument was visited by an OPW fieldworker in the same year (SMR file). His report reads:'Souterrain of gallery type. Drystone walls. Slab roof. Two chambers accessible. At present entered through roof of chamber broken in removing stones by Co. Council workmen. Chamber 1 (that through which it is now entered) measures approximately 10m feet 6 in. [3.2m] in length (probably longer, slightly curved). Upper courses of side walls corbelled. Height about 5 ft. [1.5m] but original floor level probably lower. Small doorway blocked with earth on either side of chamber 1. Chamber 2 lies in a straight line with chamber 1 and is entered from it by a low passage, through which it is possible to crawl by going flat on one's face. Chamber 2 is of similar construction to chamber 1. Its visible length is about 16 ft. [4.9m], but it is half-filled with a mass of earth and stones sloping down in a sort of ramp from the far end, representing a possible former entrance. Chamber 2 is a little less than 6 ft. [1.8m]in width. Maximum height about 5ft [1.5m] at present. Chamber 2 has an air shaft, a little over 1 ft square, slab-lined, leading towards the surface over the roof of chamber 1. The top of another air-shaft, apparently ventilating the sealed chamber on right of chamber 1 from the present entrance, has been exposed.' In a report to the NMI the fieldworker also recorded 'occupation (burned stones, iron slag, charcoal, burnt stone) on the floor of Chamber 1' (NMI topographical file). In 1962 a fragment of a decorated rotary quern (SL003-019003-), now in the National Museum, was recovered from the souterrain (Lucas 1964, 98-100).
