Overlooking the sea to the N and the estuary of the River Easky to the W. The OS Letters (1836, 283 (115)), 286-7 (116-7)) recorded that the castle was built by Oliver McDonnell in 1207 and it remained in the possession of that family until 1549. In 1603, the first year of the reign of King James 1, it was granted to Daniel O'Dowd. A contemporary description of the property recorded '2 castles, a kitchen and bakehouse within the bawn of Roslee' (ITA Survey 1942-4, 11). A late 18th-century plan and drawing depicts a rectangular keep with an adjoining building, aligned E-W, at the E side. The adjoining building is rectangular in plan, longer and narrower than the keep. Extending N from the NW angle of the keep is a length of bawn wall (Grose 1797, vol. 1, 59). Only the keep now survives. This comprises a three-storey rectangular structure (12.05m E-W; 9m N-S - Wall T 2.05m) with a slight base batter. The original entrance (Wth. 1.65m), now blocked up, is at the N end of the E wall. The present entrance, formerly a window embrasure, is in the centre of the S wall. The E 1/3 of the barrel vault which covers ground-floor level is absent. A mural stairway, commencing at the N end of the E wall and returning S, gives access to the first-floor level. In the centre of the E wall, at first-floor level, is a large blocked-up window. There are also single-light windows in the S, W and N walls. There is a garderobe in the NW angle. A mural stairs in the S wall rises directly to the battlement level. Access to the second-floor level must, therefore, have been by a wooden stairway. The second-floor level is lit by windows in S and W walls only. Casey (1999, 195, P3) noted this as a potential promontory fort but on inspection, apart from some bumps and hollows inland of the tower house, there was no evidence to suggest that it was the site of an earlier promontory fort. In pasture, on broad N-S orientated ridge. Slightly raised circular area (22m N-S; 21m E-W) enclosed by a low bank of earth and stone (Wth 4.8m; int. H 0.3m). There is no fosse visible at ground level. The external face of the bank is revetted along its base by large limestone blocks (av. L 0.95m; T 0.45m) at SW. From SE-S-SW, the bank has been removed and the precise limit of the site is difficult to determine here. The bank has also been removed NNW-N-NE where the footings of a post-medieval house abut the external edge of the site. The original entrance to the rath is not recognisable. A field bank (SL011-022001-), in all probability associated with the rath, lies 12m to the SW. In pasture, on a N-S ridge, located 12m to S of a rath (SL011-022001-). Substantial bank (L 40m E-W; Wth 3.5m; H 0.4m) of earth and stone. From its SE end, where it is truncated by a modern field wall, it curves to NW along the level summit of the ridge and then continues down slope, stopping c. 15m short of the E bank of the Easky River. The form of bank suggests that it is associated with the nearby rath. Midden extends in varying concentrations along the total length of the face from a towerhouse (SL011-020---) at E to the outflow of the Easky River at W. The main concentration of midden material is at the mouth of the Easky River. Here the midden is visible as a band (L 4m E-W; T 0.08m) of periwinkle and mussel shells within a band of darker soil, 0.3m below the top of the vertical face (total H of face 2.2m). In the NW corner of a modern walled rectangular field, located in gently undulating coastal grassland, immediately NE of Easkey village. Ground falls very gently for 300m to N ending at a rocky shoreline. The Easkey River lies to E, opening into the sea c. 560m to NE of the enclosure. This enclosure has been partly levelled. It survives as a slightly raised circular area (24.5m N-S; c. 25m E–W) defined at SW–NW by a broadly slumped bank (Wth 4-4.5m) with a relatively pronounced external scarp (ext. H 0.75m). At NNW–S the bank has been levelled and can be traced only as a low curving undulation. Close to the inner edge of the bank in the SW quadrant of the interior there is a circular hollow (5m N–S; c. 4m E–W; D 0.4m) in the centre of which is an upright stone (0.7m ENE-WSW; 0.45-0.5m NNW–SSE; H 0.95m). Abutting the enclosure at SE and S are traces of levelled field boundaries, part of a field system (SL011-143003-) that extend to SE and S. The field boundary at SE appears to connect this enclosure to another enclosure (SL011-143002-) located c. 40m to SE. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner.
