In pasture, on a break in slope in undulating terrain. Indicated as a rectangular structure on the 1838 OS 6-inch map but only the E wall (int. L 13.4m; T 1.2m), with returns of the S (int. L 6.15m) and N (int. L 0.7m) walls, now stand. The wall is of uncoursed limestone and stands to a uniform height (H c. 4m) over most of its length but much of the inner facing stones are missing. At ground-floor level, the wall is pierced by eight irregularly spaced gun loops: five in the E wall and three in the S wall. These have a plain rectangular front opening (H 0.25m; Wth 0.1m) behind which the embrasure is splayed (Wth on inside face c. 0.5m) and covered by stepped lintels. The absence of door and window opes suggests this may be the remains of a small bawn; Moygara Castle (SL044-052001-) has a much larger bawn that is pierced by gun loops in a similar fashion. According to local tradition, this is the remains of a castle built by the MacDonaghs (ITA). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). In pasture, on a low ridge and on the N side of a stone field boundary wall. A slightly raised D-shaped area (c. 15m N-S) with straight S side (L 20m). The interior is defined by low sod-covered stone footings (Wth c. 2m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 1m) W-E and by a linear field wall at S. A possible entrance (Wth 2m) is at ENE. There are no visible remains of this possible rath on the S side of the field boundary. There is a rectangular stone-built structure on the S side of the field boundary at the E end. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). In rough grazing, amidst natural rock outcrops, on top of a ridge. A circular area (diam. 22m) enclosed by the remains of a bank or wall, now evident as the lower two or three courses of internal and external facing of limestone slabs (Wth c. 5m; int. H 1.3m; ext. H 1.2m). The interior is uneven and strewn with sod-covered stones. A slightly raised rectangular area (c. 10m x 6m) is roughly in the centre, immediately S of which is a hollow (4m x 3m). There is a souterrain (SL027-090002-) in the W half of the interior. There is a rock outcrop close to the wall in the E half. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). In a rath (SL027-090001-). Immediately inside the bank of the rath at W is the collapsed S end of a stone-built lintelled passage (L 4m; Wth 0.9m; long axis N-S). The passage, with its roof lintels in situ, can be traced for a further 12m to N extending underneath the bank of the rath to the exterior. Two exposed lintels, immediately N of the collapsed section, measure 1.75m x 0.95m x 0.4m and 1.7m x 0.6m x 0.4m respectively. The bank is low but clearly defined (Wth 3m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 1.3m). There is an entrance (Wth 2m) at E. The fosse (Wth 2m; D 0.4m) is marked by a growth of rushes. In pasture, on a rocky bluff, c. 40m NW of the Douglas River. A raised circular area (21.5m N-S; 21.6m E-W) defined S-NE by a stony bank (Wth 3m; int. H 0.25m; ext. H 1.5m) with a pronounced external face and a low internal lip and elsewhere by the steep fall of ground (H 4m) which drops to a narrow terrace from which there is a further fall to the base of the bluff. Many rough angular stone protrudes from the sides and top of the bank. The stony top of the bank at W appears more regular and may represent wall footings (Wth c. 1m). The interior is generally level but with an uneven surface. A low N-facing scarp (H 0.5m) marks a drop in the ground level in the N half (3m SSW of the bank). Traces of a similar scarp on a NNE-SSW axis are evident in the E third of the interior. At NE an irregular depression (c. 5m NW-SE) is quarried into the scarp and extends c. 5m to SW into the interior. A small portion (c. 3m NE-SW; 2m NW-SE) of the scarp at SW is also dug away. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
