On the rounded peak of Crockalaghta, affording panoramic views of the surrounding countryside with the cairns on Doomore (SL019-177----) c. 320m to E and Knocknarea (SL014-076----) and Knocknashee (SL032-013003-) visible in the distance to NE and SSE. The cairn (diam. c. 13m; H 1.3m) is located towards the NE side of the peak and is partially obscured by a blanket of peat and heather. On top of the W side of the cairn, a small pile of stones stands above the level of the rest. A smaller cairn (SL019-174002-) lies c. 4m to S. A few metres further S, a slightly curving roughly E-W line of intermittent stones protrudes from the heather. In the N half of Mullagh Lough in the Ox Mountains. The lake is surrounded by a mature forest plantation. The crannog was not inspected as access to the lake with water transport was restricted. It was viewed from the N shore of the lake and appears to be a low islet (diam. c. 10m), covered in rushes, c. 100m from the present shoreline. The crannog was recorded during a previous inspection as consisting of a cairn (diam. c. 8m), c. 1m below the surface of the water, and a rotary quernstone was noted on its surface (pers. comm. M. Gibbons). In rocky upland pasture, on a rise on the margins of flat boggy ground. A spring rises to N of the rath and flows past it at NE, feeding into the boggy ground. A roughly circular area (c. 40m N-S) defined by a scarp (H 1.5m) SW-NNE and by a steep natural fall of ground S-SW. The enclosing elements are not visible NNE-SE due to a dense overgrowth of blackthorn bushes. The scarp is topped by a rim of loose stones (Wth c. 1-1.5m), stones are also visible in the face of the scarp which may be remains of stone facing. A shallow external flat-bottomed fosse (Wth 2m) is visible SW-NNE. The remains of a stone field boundary (Wth 1m; H 0.3m) skirts the fosse W-NW. The interior is level except in the NE quadrant where it slopes down to NE and is wet underfoot. Much of the interior is engulfed in a thicket of blackthorn, hazel and brambles, but the centre is clear of overgrowth. There is a possible hut site (SL025-011002-) in the NW quadrant of the interior. In the E and SE of the interior are the remains of possible 19th-century structures, consisting of a number of intersecting ruined walls (Wth c. 1m; H 0.4m) enclosing small rectilinear areas. Within one of these areas are the foundations of a rectangular structure (4.3m N-S; c. 5.3m E-W) defined by a sod-covered stone wall (Wth 0.7m; H 0.3m). The interior is partially infilled with stones. It appears to be the ruins of a small house. To S of the structure there are spreads and heaps of fieldstones. There is a possible souterrain (SL025-011001-) in the interior. In the NW quadrant of a rath (SL025-011----). A small oval feature (8.5m NE-SW; 6.5m NW-SE) defined by a ruinous wall (Wth 0.5m), consisting of loose stones barely protruding above the ground. Roughly in the centre of the ring of stones is a shallow hollow (Wth c. 2m) and a few metres S of the ring of stones there are traces of a ruinous wall curving in a shallow arc towards the enclosing scarp of the rath at SW. In pasture, at a break of slope on the SE side of a ridge; the ground falls away steeply to the S and E but rises gently to the NW and W. A raised circular area (30.1m N-S; 32.6m E-W) defined by two banks and an intervening fosse. The inner bank (Wth 6.5m; int. H 0.9m; ext. H 3.1m) is best preserved SSW-NE; it is low or levelled elsewhere. There is a gap (Wth 3m) at SE. The intervening fosse (Wth 5m) is evident SSW-NE. The outer bank (Wth c. 3.5m; int. H 1.5m; ext. H 1m) is evident SW-NE; a field boundary wall is built on top of the bank in places and elsewhere built against the external face of the bank. The outer bank E-SE is possibly truncated by a field boundary. The fosse and parts of the outer bank are partially overgrown with hawthorn bushes. The interior slopes down gently to SSE. There is a possible souterrain (SL025-01201-) in the centre of the W half. A semicircular hollow (c. 3m x 2m) is visible immediately inside the gap at SE. There is a house immediately S of the rath. At a break of slope, on the S side of a ridge overlooking the valley of the Owenboy River to S; with panoramic views. A slightly raised oval area (21.8m N-S; 24.6m E-W) defined by two enclosing banks/walls with an intervening fosse. The inner bank is evident along the E arc as a low sod-covered stony bank (Wth 2.7m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 0.5m) with some internal stone kerbing and along the W arc as low wall-footings with internal and external stone facing (Wth 2.3m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 0.3m). There is a berm (Wth 2m; H 0.5m) outside the bank SW-NW. The outer bank (Wth 3.4m; int. H 0.7m; ext. H 0.65m) is well defined SW-NW, degraded E-S and levelled elsewhere. The fosse (Wth 2.3m) best evident SW-NW, less well defined E-S and evident only by a growth of rushes elsewhere. There is a possible entrance (Wth 1.2m), partially lined with stones, through the banks and across the fosse at SE. The entrance is partially obscured by a dense growth of irises. The interior slopes gently down to S and is mostly covered with rushes and irises. There is a wet boggy area in the SE quadrant. A hut site (SL025-037002-) lies to W of centre. In undulating pasture, on a gentle SE-facing slope. A raised circular area (37.8m N-S; 41.8m E-W) enclosed by two banks and an intervening fosse. The inner bank (Wth 6.8m; int. H 1.1m; ext. H 2.5m) is evident all round. At the SE, partially obscured by a field clearance pile, is a parallel setting of stones (1.2m apart), possibly the remains of a stone-lined entrance passage with a gap (Wth 2m) immediately to S. The deep intervening fosse (Wth 4m), which is evident SW-SE, is reduced to a shallow depression SE-SW. The outer bank is levelled SE-SW but substantial elsewhere (Wth 6m; int. H 1.8m; ext. H 1.45m). There is an eroded gap (Wth 1m) through the inner and outer banks at NNW. The interior is split level; the higher N half is divided from the lower S half by a gentle scarp extending roughly E-W just S of centre. There is a possible souterrain (SL025-038001-) in the NE quadrant. Field boundaries are built against the external face of the inner bank SE-SW and the external face of the outer bank SW-W and NW-NE. In the NE quadrant of a rath (SL025-038----). A roughly L-shaped depression (Wth 2m; D 0.7m) with expanded ends (Wth 3m) and stones protruding from the sides may indicate a collapsed souterrain. The shorter section (L 10m N-S) joins the bank of the rath at the N and follows its curved line for c. 19m N-NE.
