In pasture, on a headland defined by rock cliffs which drop to a stone beach and a rocky shoreline. A stream, flowing N in a narrow gully, bisects the headland to E of centre. Toward the N end of the headland, the stream flows through a deeper rock-faced ravine, which has been partly expanded by quarrying on it W side. Another stream borders the W side of the headland, and a modern road, leading to a pier, lies immediately to W of the headland. A disused, grassed-over trackway, bordered by field banks, extends E–W across the S side of the headland. Evidence of the promontory fort is located on the E part of the headland, bordered by the stream gully at W and by the natural cliff at NNW–E. The landward side of the promontory is cut off by two low-profile banks with external fosses. The innermost bank (Wth c. 2m; H 0.4m) is very low, though somewhat higher and more clearly defined at its W end. Intervening between it and the outer bank is a fosse (Wth c. 3m). The outer bank (Wth 3.5-4m; H 0.5m) is broadly slumped. It is bordered externally by the outermost fosse (Wth 3-3.5m). The enclosed area forms a somewhat irregular-shaped oblong measuring c. 25-30m N–S by c. 20-25m E–W. In rough, coastal pasture, built into the scarp on the N side of a trackway. Not marked on the 1837 or 1913 editions of the OS 6-inch map. Ruined vernacular limekiln consisting of a roughly circular, stone-built structure (int. diam. c. 1-1.2m E–W; wall H 0.8m), roofless and open to N. Not listed in the SMR (1989) or RMP (1995). This is a post-1700 structure. Compiled by: Patrick F. Not marked as an antiquity on any edition of the OS 6-inch map. Small, roughly trapezoidal promontory (18m NW-SE; c. 5m NE-SW) jutting into the S side of Sligo Bay. The NW, NE and SE sides are defined by high sea cliffs. The NE end, in particular, is much eroded by wave action. The promontory is cut off on the SW side from the surrounding land by a low bank of earth and stone (Wth 1.2m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 0.6m). At the outer foot of the bank is a berm (Wth 2m). Beyond this is a wide, flat-bottomed fosse (Wth 11.8m at top, 5.2m at base; D 1.65-2.3m). There is a break in the bank (Wth 3m) at SE, with an accompanying causeway across the fosse. Situated at the NE edge of a low ridge in coastal pasture. Depicted as a circular enclosure on the 1837 edition of the OS 6-inch map. The enclosure has been levelled but the outline of a circular area (diam c. 22m E–W) can still be discerned. It is defined by a slight scarp at W (H 0.6m) and at N (H 1.2m) where it merges with the ridge slope. There is a possible souterrain (SL012-051001-) in the interior. A derelict cottage abuts the SW of the enclosure, and the stone walls of a field plot overlie the SE quadrant. Compiled by: Patrick F. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner.
