On top of a hillock, overlooking a small stream. A large limestone slab (L 2.6m; Wth 1.8m; T 0.4m) resting on three smaller boulders (dims of one: 1.1m x 0.85m; H 0.26m). Other slabs were also noted in the vicinity. The group is located on an elongated mound (SL021-026002-) which utilises part of the natural hillock. In pasture, on a hillock overlooking a small stream. A long earthen mound (c. 56m E-W; 10m N-S; H c. 1.4m) incorporating part of a natural rise. The W end of the mound slopes down to W, is wedge-shaped (18m E-W; 8m N-S at E end; 7m N-S at W end) and revetted with large boulders. A large limestone slab (L 2.6m; Wth 1.8m; T 0.4m) (SL021-026001-) resting on three smaller boulders (dims. of one: 1.1m x 0.85m; H 0.26m) forms the E side where a straight line of boulders joins these stones to the S side of mound. The eastern portion of the mound (L 40m; Wth 10m), E of the boulders and slab, is convex in profile. The mound is ill-defined at the E end with a scarp revetted by smaller stones continuing on the N side for a further 20m. A narrow rectangular field is indicated here on the 1838 OS 6-inch map. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). In rough pasture, on a hillock. A roughly circular area (diam. 19m) enclosed by a low stone wall (T 1.2m; H 1.2m). There is a possible entrance (Wth 1m) at E. Another cashel (SL021-028----) lies c. 120m to E. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). Date of upload: 18 January 2008 - SL021-028: Ringfort - cashel, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CSL021-028----. In undulating rocky pasture, on the summit of a small hillock with a stream at its base on the W side. This cashel is a national monument in State care (no. 277). An oval area (21m E-W; 16m N-S) enclosed by a substantial drystone wall (Wth 3m; int. H 1m; ext. H 2.4m). In parts, a low foundation plinth of prostrate slabs protrudes slightly at the base of the external face. This was necessary in order to stabilise the wall, which is built almost at the break of slope at the top of the hillock. The entrance (Wth c. 1.2m) is at ENE and is now partially blocked by large stones displaced from the collapsed S jamb. From the entrance the gentle ramp-like slope of the hillock drops to a spine of elevated ground forming a natural routeway to E. Immediately outside the entrance, slightly to N of the N jamb, there are two large contiguous upright slabs set perpendicular to the cashel wall. Another large upright slab is located c. 5m down slope to ENE, adjacent to a concentration of stones. In the centre of the level grassy interior two large prostrate slabs (max. dim. 1.2-1.7m) are embedded in the ground. A dilapidated field wall (Wth c. 1m; H 0.5m), largely obscured by overgrowth and superseded by a post and wire fence, encloses the base of the hillock NW-SW, continuing to W beyond the cashel. No evidence of a chamber noted by Milligan (1890-91, 577) in the thickness of the wall, which was entered by a small square-headed door (H 2 ft 6 ins [0.76m]; Wth 2 ft [0.6m]) to which access was not gained as it was filled with rubbish and rubble. According to local tradition, the chamber gave access to a secret passage, which led to the bottom of the hill (ibid.). Skeletons were frequently found in the ground outside the cashel (Milligan 1890-1, 577). Recorded in 1836 as 'Badhbun Buidhe' (OSL, 254) and in 1894 as 'The Bauven Crin' (the fortress of Belonna) (Kerr Kirker 1894, 278). Recorded as 'Caisleán Oir or Caisleán Uabhair (castle of pride)' (Faughnan 1943). A possible souterrain (SL021-028001-) is associated with this cashel. Another cashel (SL021-027----) is located c. 120m to W. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). In pasture, on a low ridge. The inner end of a court at the E opens into the remains of a gallery (L 4.4m; Wth c. 1.7m). Three courtstones flank the S side of the gallery entrance and one the N side. Wood-Martin (1887-8, 295-6; 1888, 203-4) noted four extra stones at the N which would suggest that there may have been a full court here. Two stones remain of the N side of the gallery and three of the S side. The inner ends of both sides are missing but the backstone survives. There is no indication of segmentation in the gallery. Beyond the backstone and more or less in line with the N side of the gallery there is a thin, low stone on edge. Its function is unclear. (Ó Nualláin 1989, 51-2, no. 80). On the top of a high ridge, close to a break of slope on the N side. A slightly raised circular area (c. 26m E-W; c. 27m N-S) enclosed by an earthen bank (Wth 2m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 1m) with an external fosse. The fosse is evident NE-SE as a shallow flat-bottomed, waterlogged depression (Wth 2.5m) and is recut (Wth 1.7m; D 0.5m) at W to serve as a field drain. The fosse becomes a flat terrace (Wth 2m) of damp ground NNW-NE, its outer edge coinciding with the top of the steep ridge slope. A N-S field drain (Wth 1m; D 0.4m) cuts across the W edge of the rath, more or less on the inner face of the bank. The external face of the bank at S is incorporated into an E-W field boundary. There is a possible entrance (Wth 1.6m) at E with the remains of stone facing. The entrance is partially obstructed on the inner edge by two large stones. There is a hint of a causeway across the fosse. The rath is engulfed in a thicket of hazel, blackthorn and brambles. The interior is level. There is a souterrain (SL021-031002-) in the NW quadrant. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). In the NW quadrant of a rath (SL021-031001-). Three large moss-covered slabs, possibly roof lintels, protrude horizontally from the NW face of the field drain that cuts across the inner face of the bank at the W portion of the rath. Another horizontal slab protrudes from the ground 3m to S.
