In the centre of a former lumber yard surrounded by recent walls and structures; at the W end of a small graveyard, between two 19th-century warehouses. A ruined rectangular structure (16m E-W; 6m N-S) built of uncoursed limestone blocks. The N and S walls are very poorly preserved and the SW corner is missing. A window embrasure, in the centre of the E wall, survives as a rough opening (Wth c. 1.5m); a drawing by Wakeman (O'Rorke [1889], vol. 2, 344) shows it with a double-ogee light missing its mullion. This window indicates a 15th/16th-century date for the church, which was, according to tradition, built by the O'Haras (O'Rorke 1878, 102-4). It was converted to Protestant use 'soon after the Reformation' but finally abandoned early in the 18th century (ibid.). There are a number of 18th- and 19th-century grave-memorials in the interior, some of which are listed by O'Rorke (1878, 102-4). There is no known historical record of a monastic foundation here (see Gwynn and Hadcock 1970). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). Date of upload: 18 January 2008 - SL020-203002: Graveyard, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CSL020-203002-. A rectangular graveyard (23m E-W; 12m N-S), no longer used and much covered by overgrowth. The ruin of a late medieval church (SL020-203001-), situated at its W end, takes up most of the space between two warehouses. The interior of the church and graveyard have thirteen memorials 'for some of the leading families of Tirerrill' (O'Rorke 1878, 103). The tomb dated 1707, which O'Rorke (ibid.) noted as the oldest, is no longer evident (pers. comm. M. B. Timoney). An archaeological assessment, carried out in the early 1990s, revealed 'a massive degree of ground disturbance' in the area, but three skeletons and a possible fosse were discovered in small trenches to the SE and NE of the graveyard respectively (Simpson 1994). These suggest a possible early medieval date for the site though there is no documentary evidence for such a foundation (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970). Archaeological monitoring of the site in 2000, prior to development, confirmed that human remains were buried outside the graveyard wall to the E (Halpin 2001, 300-301). According to local information, other human remains were uncovered during the course of the site's development (ibid.). The undisturbed ground (dims. 8m x 5m) to the E did not reveal any further human remains while further E the ground was disturbed and it appears likely that the construction of the basement of Abbey House may account for the ditch or boundary uncovered in the 1994 assessment (ibid., 301). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). Not included in the SMR (1989) but listed in the RMP (1995) and classified 'Mill'. On the E bank of the Owenmore river, on the N side of Collooney. Most of the mill complex is demolished though the remains of wheel-pits and arched headraces and tailraces are evident. Some ancillary late 19th-century mill buildings remain, the main blocks are around and attached to a church and graveyard (SL020-203001- and SL020-203002-) on the E side of the cleared yard. The ruins of late 18th-century buildings on the river front and to one side of the lumber yard were noted during a previous inspection in 1992 (SMR (1989) file). A substantial bleach mill complex still stands on the opposite bank of the river (see SL020-272----). According to local information, both mills were owned by the Sims family. Valuation Office Mill Books recorded Alex Sims as the miller of a flour mill in Collooney, powered by a waterwheel (diam. 36ft [10.97m]; breath 8ft [2.43m]), which turned six pairs of stones (Hogg 1998, 108). According to Wood-Martin (1882, 240), Collooney mills 'occupy the site of a much older concern'. This mill is probably post-1700 AD in date. Compiled by: Archaeological Survey Unit, UCC Date of upload: 12 December 2011 - SL020-236: Bridge, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CSL020-236----. A bridge is indicated on the Down Survey (1655-6) barony map on or close to the location of the present bridge over the Owenmore River at the N edge of Collooney. No visible remains of this bridge are now evident. The present road bridge (on a N-S axis; Wth 3.2m) is of eight semicircular arches (span c. 4.4m) with roughly shaped voussoirs. Tall thin piers (Wth c. 1.35m) with tall pointed cutwaters rise to the base of a modern parapet. The core of the bridge is of random rubble limestone. The bridge is extended 3.55m on the downstream (E) side and the extension has similarly shaped stone arches with dressed voussoirs and pointed cutwaters. The arches are heavily underpinned with a thick layer of concrete. The bridge has been extended further in recent times. According to O'Rorke ([1889], vol. 2, 556), Collooney bridge dates to about 1400 but it is not the structure that now exists in this place. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). Date of upload: 18 January 2008 - SL020-240: House - 16th/17th century, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CSL020-240----. On the E side of Collooney village, in the NW corner of a walled garden known as 'the castle gardens'. According to local tradition, the S (L 9m; H 3m) and E (L 7.3m; H 3m) walls of a complex containing a garage and outbuildings, are the remains of Richard Coote's house known as Collooney Castle (O'Rorke 1878, 54; M. A. Timoney 1999). The walls are of random-rubble limestone construction, partially covered by a plaster render. The E wall contains one blocked-up rectangular window ope (Wth 1.1m) and the S wall has two similar blocked-up opes. The structure contains no datable architectural features. The house was built for Richard Coote by the architect Daniel Thomas and was finished by one of his sons in 1657 (Loeber 1981, 107). Coote was resident in Collooney Castle in 1659 and derived his title Baron Coote of Collooney from the place (ibid.); he was later created Earl of Bellamont. O'Rorke (1878, 52-4) states that much of the castle at Cloonmacduff (SL020-207----) was 'pulled down and carted away to build Lord Bellamont's mansion in Collooney'. It was listed as containing 'ten hearths' in 1662, unusually large for a settler's house (O'Dowd 1991, 141). According to Wood-Martin (1889, 106), 'the fortified house of Lord Bellamount' was located 'close to the new Roman Catholic Church'; it is in fact to the E of the church. Recent archaeological test trenching at the site 'did not reveal any soils, features or finds of archaeological significance' (Conway 2000, 274). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). An undecorated cylindrical stoup (diam. c. 0.42m; H c. 0.26m), possibly associated with the possible church in Cloonamahan (SL026-154001-), was in the possession of the Passionist community at Cloonamahan and is now in the Parochial House at Collooney (pers. comm. M. A. Timoney). Compiled by: Archaeological Survey Unit, University College Cork. Date of upload: 15 May 2009 - SL026-170: Walled garden, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CSL026-170----. Not included in the SMR (1989) but listed in the RMP (1995) and classified 'Barrack - Infantry, Possible'. The source of the reference to a 'barrack' at Collooney is unknown (see Timoney 2002). This is a rectangular field surrounded by high walls and, according to local information, was an orchard for the nearby convent. An archaeological assessment by Martin Timoney (1999) and test trenching (Conway 2000, 274; Timoney 2012) revealed nothing of archaeological significance. This walled garden is probably post-AD 1700 in date. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner.
