In poorly drained pasture, on a low rise. A raised circular area (28m N-S) defined by a substantial earthen bank (Wth 5m; int. H 0.9m; ext. H 2.5m) SE-NE, which is eroded in parts and by a scarp NE-SE. An external fosse (Wth 2.5m; D 1m) is evident SE-SW. A N-S field boundary lies immediately to W on the line of the fosse. The interior slopes gently down to E and there is a collapsed souterrain (SL034-067002-) in the centre. Mature trees grow on the rath. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). In the centre of a rath (SL034-067001-). A depression indicates the line of a collapsed souterrain passage (L 8m E-W) with some limestone lintels exposed. At the W end the passage turns at right angles to S (L 12m). According to local information, it was a drystone-built passage with a lintelled roof, an entrance at the E end and two or three chambers off it. The depression has been infilled and recently disturbed. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). Listed in both the SMR (1989) and RMP (1995) and classified as 'Sweathouse' and 'Sweathouse Site' respectively. In poorly drained pasture, on the E-facing slope of a low rise between two farmhouses. The remains comprise the stone foundations of a circular sweathouse (int. dims. 1.6m N-S; 2m E-W; max. D 0.8m) built into the slope of a hill. According to local information, it was dismantled 'many years ago' and the stones used to make a road. It had not been used in the informant's life time but he recalled old men in his youth talking about lighting fires to heat the stones for the sweathouse. This is probably post-1700 AD in date. In undulating rough pasture, near the top of the N-facing slope of a ridge. A raised circular area (diam. c. 20m) enclosed by a substantial earthen bank (Wth 5m; int. H 1.3m; ext. H 1.8m) with remains of a stone kerb visible at intervals around the base of the internal face of the bank. The boggy external fosse (Wth 3m; D 0.9m) is filled with rushes. A possible entrance (Wth 1m) is at N. The possible remains of an outer bank (Wth 1.8m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 0.6m) curve around the fosse N-NE. The interior slopes down from S to N and there is a possible souterrain (SL034-069002-) in the W half, adjacent to the bank. In the interior of a rath (SL034-069001-). A depression (4m N-S; 1.5m E-W), adjacent to the bank of the rath at W, may indicate a collapsed souterrain chamber. In rough pasture, on the N-facing slope of a low rise. A mature sycamore tree grows on the S edge of a penitential cairn (SL034-070002-). Wood-Martin (1892, 372) referred to the many legends and traditions attached to this tree 'some of which are yet current'. In 1836 it was noted that Catholics are said to have performed stations here (OSNB vol. 1, 468). It is known locally as a site of stations or 'pattern'. Nine rounded stones (SL034-07003-) similar to 'cursing stones' and a cross-inscribed slab (SL034-070004-) were noted here in 2003 (pers. comm. M. B. Timoney). There is a holy tree (SL034-070001-) at the S edge of the cairn. The cairn is known locally as a site of stations or 'pattern'. Wood-Martin (1892, 372) referred to stones which are 'so disposed as to simulate the form of a rude altar'. Two quarry holes lie immediately to N of the cairn. Near the top of the W-facing slope of a ridge. A circular raised area (22m N-S; 19m E-W) enclosed by an earthen bank (Wth 3.5m; int. H 1m; ext. H 1.3m) which is best preserved along the E arc. Remains of a stone revetment are evident on the internal and external bank face. There is a curved platform (3m E-W; H 0.4m) on the inside of the bank along the E arc. An external fosse (Wth 3m) is marked by a line of rushes along the S and SE arcs with faint traces on the W arc. The entrance (Wth 1.7m) is at S, the E side of which is faced with large boulders. A field boundary cuts across the fosse at E and continues curving around the outside edge of the fosse on the N arc. In Lough Bo, c. 60m from the stony E shore. A roughly circular low-cairn crannog (20.75m N-S; 22.4m E-W; H 1.2m above the muddy lake-bed) consisting of a partially submerged plateau of small shattered stones (diam. c. 0.05m) with patches of sand in between them and a mix of dark brown mud and sand. The plateau has an even surface and slopes gradually down towards the edges where shattered stones are mixed with muddy marl. In the centre of the plateau, and rising above the water level, is a small oval loosely packed collection of stones, mainly sandstone. Some of the stones are flagstones but there are also subangular and rounded stones (dims. c. 0.45m x 0.4m). On the edge of the plateau at S is a U-shaped indentation in which is exposed an irregular double row of wooden posts leading out into the water. Horizontal timbers can also be seen under the stony surface material of the crannog. There is also a stony ridge (L 14m) leading from the centre of the oval stony area out into the water in a SE direction, possibly the remains of a jetty. The edges of the crannog slope gently under the water towards the W and open water, while there is a more abrupt edge at the E towards the shore. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). In pasture, located the level top of a high ridge, close to the break of slope at NE where ground falls in a long, steep NE-facing slope into a small stream valley. There are excellent views N−SE bounded by a distant high ridge. This possible enclosure is not indicated on the 1838 OS 6-inch map, but is shown on the 25-inch plan and 1914 OS 6-inch map as an arc of hachuring which curves W−NE (cord L c. 25m). A low scarp can be traced W−NE in a broad arc (cord L 29-30m NE−SW). The scarp appears to have been partly levelled in the past; it is very slight at W−NW (H 0.3m; Wth slope 2-3m), but is better preserved at N−NNE (H 0.9m; Wth slope c. 6m) where it coincides with and is enhanced by the natural break of slope of the ridge. A slight surface undulation on a N-S axis, possibly the remains of a field boundary, cuts across the NE terminal of the arc. The significance of this curving scarp is uncertain; it may be the surviving NW arc of an originally circular enclosure. There is a rath (MA034-069001-) 275m to W.
