In a broad valley among foothills at the SW end of the Ox Mountains. It lies to the E of a field fence on land reclaimed from the bog. A well-preserved SW-facing gallery (L 8.7m) opens onto a flat facade which links it to flanking lines of outer-walling. A curved line (L c. 8m) of seven orthostats between 2m and 4m beyond the more northerly side of the outer-walling seems to represent a kerb. The whole stands in a low mound (16.5m N-S; 12m E-W; max. H 0.75m). A high septal-stone divides the gallery into a portico (L 2m; Wth 2.1m at front, 1.8m at the septal-stone) and main chamber (L 6.2m; Wth 1.6m at front, narrowing to c. 0.8m at rear). Single stones form the portico sides. The septal-stone, now split from base to top towards its N end, is inset in the gallery walls and rises 0.2m above the portico sides. Two broken and partly concealed roofstones lie to the E of the septal-stone and there are other smaller displaced stones beyond these. The N side of the main chamber is formed by eight orthostats some of which partly overlap each other. Only three stones, alongside to the W, remain of the opposite side. Ten outer-wall stones are in position to both N and S and the eastern two examples at both sides turn inwards towards the backstone of the gallery. A single façade-stone joins the front of the gallery to the outer wall at each side. Adjoining the inner end of each facade-stone is an orthostat. These two stones stand at either side of the portico entrance (Wth 0.8m). Another wedge tomb (SL036-036----) lies c. 1km to NE in the same valley. (Ó Nualláin 1989, 72-3, no. 114) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). Date of upload: 18 January 2008 See linked document with details from Seán Ó Nualláin, Survey of the Megalithic Tombs of Ireland. Volume V. County Sligo. On a little knoll in the same valley as another wedge-tomb (SL036-035----) c. 1km to SW. A WNW-facing gallery (L at least 7m; Wth 1.85m at front, narrows sharply to rear), flanked at the S by the slight remains of an outer wall, stands on a D-shaped platform (H 0.5m to 1m) which appears to be artificial. There are vague traces of mound at the back and along the N side of the gallery. A number of displaced and largely concealed roofstones cover the E end of the structure. Three orthostats are in position at the front of the more northerly side of the gallery, the first set outside the line of the other two. Beyond these, two largely concealed slabs, apparently sidestones, have collapsed inwards. About 1m beyond these another inward-leaning stone, now split, also appears to be a sidestone. Four orthostats are in position at the outer end of the more southerly side of the gallery, the second set outside the line of the others. About 1.5m beyond these an outwards-leaning stone may also be a sidestone. There are three buttress-stones outside the N side of the gallery, one at right angles to the inner end of the first orthostat and there are two just beyond the collapsed easternmost sidestone. There is another buttress-stone outside the more westerly end of the second sidestone at the S. Outside and parallel to the opposite end of the same orthostat there is a low stone perhaps like the buttress-stone intended to support the gallery side. There are two outer-wall stones alongside some 1.5m beyond the end of the S side of the gallery. A large stone in front of the tomb is displaced. (Ó Nualláin 1989, 73-4, 116, no. 116) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). In pasture, on the southern slopes of the Ox Mountains and c. 90m to S of stream. A roughly circular area (30.5m N-S; 32.5m E-W) enclosed by a partially collapsed drystone wall (Wth 3.1m; int. H 1.75m; ext. H 2.2m) along the E, S and W arcs. A stone field boundary has been built on top of the foundations of a drystone wall along the N arc. The inner and outer faces of the wall are constructed of large rectangular blocks of stone, and the core is filled with smaller stones. A large amount of collapsed stone from the wall now lies in the interior. The entrance (Wth 1.2m) is at SSE, roofed by large lintels. The interior is bisected by a field boundary on a N-S axis. There is a steep natural slope down to S in the N third of the interior. The remainder of the interior is level as it has been raised to compensate for the hillslope. There is a possible souterrain (SL036-037002-) in the interior. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). In a cashel (SL036-037001-). There are no visible remains of the feature named 'Cave' on the 1914 OS 6-inch map. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). Listed in the SMR (1989) and RMP (1995) and classified 'Field System'. Not marked on the 1838 edition of the OS 6-inch map. This field system is apparently linked to a deserted hamlet just to the north of a cashel (SL036-037001-). It is visible in an aerial photograph (GSIAP, G 235-4). The layout of the field system visible in the aerial photograph is identical to that depicted on the 1914 OS 6-inch map. This is probably post-1700 AD in date. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
