In pasture, on a slight E-facing slope on top of a ridge. A raised circular area (33m N-S; 32m E-W) defined by an inner earth and stone bank, an intervening fosse and an outer earthen bank. The inner earthen bank (int. H 0.7m; Ext. H 1.95m) encloses the interior WSW-ENE and SE-SSW. The inner bank has been quarried away SSW-WSW and eroded by cattle breaks at NW (Wth 6m), at N (Wth 4m) and at S (Wth 4m). The break at S has a slight causeway across the fosse caused by outward slumping of the inner bank. There is a possible entrance at E (Wth 7m) with an adjacent area to S disturbed by quarrying. The intervening fosse (Wth 3m at base) and the outer earthen bank (int. H 0.85m; ext. H. 0.55m) are evident SE-NE. A field boundary truncates the outer bank NE-SE, a second field boundary abuts the external face of the outer bank along the W arc. The interior is undulating and strewn with rocks and slopes gently down to E. Some of the undulations may be the result of quarrying. A small rectangular earthwork is located just outside the outer bank at NNE. This earthwork consists of a raised rectangular area (4m N-S; 4.7m E-W) defined by an earth and stone bank (int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.45m). The interior is slightly concave in profile and clear of overgrowth. On the SE side of this earthwork, outside the base of the bank at the SE corner, a shallow drain (D 0.3m) with an earthen bank (H 0.45m) on its N side (both orientated E-W) has been dug extending E to a field boundary. Roughly 1.5m to the W of the rectangular earthwork is a series of low earth and stone mounds (diam. 1.5-2.5m; H 0.8-1m). A low earthen bank (ext. H 0.25m) which runs parallel to the W edge of the rectangular earthwork defines the limit of these mounds on the E side. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). In gently undulating pasture on level ground. A roughly circular area (diam. 2.8m) defined by a fosse and an outer earthen bank. The interior consists of firm undisturbed ground while the fosse is clearly evident as a band of soft ground (Wth 1.7m) N-SW but less distinct SW-N. The bank (Wth 2.9m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.4m) is evident all round with a break at W (Wth 2.4m). Another ring-barrow (SL033-199----) lies c. 100m to WSW and a bowl-barrow (SL033-049----) c. 50m to NE. In gently undulating pasture, on a slight W-facing slope. A large roughly circular dome-shaped mound (36m N-S; 40m E-W) defined by a fosse and an external earthen bank. The fosse (Wth 4.1m at base; Wth 8.95m at top) is evident all round and is densely overgrown and inaccessible E-W. The bank (int. H 0.85m to base of fosse; ext. H 1.1m) is evident all round, is incorporated into the field boundary system SE-SW and is densely overgrown and inaccessible E-W. The apex of the domed mound is slightly off-centre to S and is 4.1m higher than the top of the fosse. A disused quarry is situated outside the bank at NNE. This barrow appears to be formed around a natural hillock that has been modified to create a large earthwork. A ring-barrow (SL033-048----) lies c. 60m to SW and another (SL033-199----) c. 150m to SW. At S the mound has been dug into revealing a compact sod layer and a shattered stone and clay core (pers. comm. J. Farrelly and M. Keane). Known locally as 'Corran'. In gently undulating pasture, on the E side of the summit of a low broad ridge. A circular flat-topped mound (diam. 12.6m at base, 8m at top) surrounded by a fosse (Wth 2.4m at base) and an external earth and stone bank (Wth 5.6m; int. H 1.05m; ext. H 0.3m). The mound rises 1.35m above the base of the fosse. Recorded in 1836 as 'Sídheán a'Gháire' (OSL, 423), a translation of which was given in Wood-Martin (1887-8, 269) as 'the Fairy Mount of Laughter'. A bowl-barrow (SL033-050----) lies c. 50m to WSW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). This ring-barrow was severely damaged by land reclamation work in April 2006: the enclosing bank was levelled, the fosse infilled and several pits dug through the central mound. A rescue excavation (06E0720) was undertaken over three weeks in August 2006 by Margaret Keane, National Monuments Service (Keane 2009, 469, no. 1770). The excavation concentrated on the western side of the crest of the mound, and in addition a single trench was excavated across the fosse and external bank. The excavation of the fosse revealed that it was originally c. 2.5m wide at the top and c. 0.9m deep, with a sharply cut external edge, a rounded base, and a shallower profile on the internal mound side. A single post-hole was recorded just inside the edge of the mound crest. On the crest of the mound, the upper deposits consisted of spreads of charcoal-rich soils, with burnt bone and occasional artefacts interleaving with a spread of compact white/grey silt. Burnt material spread across the site may represent rakings of funeral pyre material. Beneath these layers, were a cluster of eight pits (max. dims. 0.3-1.3m) filled with deposits of burnt bone, in a clayey matrix with occasional artefacts. The interior edges of some of the pits were significantly charred. The most impressive pit (D c. 0.5m) had a basal deposit of cremated bone, and upper fills rich in charcoal and burnt bone. Artefacts recovered include ten glass beads or bead fragments, two unperforated glass beads/toggles, a single copper alloy spiral ring, five copper alloy pins, a copper alloy rod, copper alloy fragments, iron fragments, pieces of slag, worked flint and chert. (Keane 2009, 469, no. 1770). According to MacDonagh (1936, 197) this ruin is 'the remains of the fortified house' built by Jasper Brett; Brett was High Sheriff of Sligo in 1627-28 and 1635 (O'Dowd 1991, 58). Access to the ruined structure, which is known locally as a 'castle', was denied by the landowner but it was observed from the roadside. It consists of a SW gable wall (L 10.35m; T 0.25-0.45m) and returns of the NW (L 6.5m) and SE (L 3.1m) walls, of a two-storey house (wall measurements in Flynn 2003). The walls (H c. 5m) are of random mortared rubble with undressed corner quoins. Some red brick was also noted in the fabric of the walls, particularly at the broken ends of the NW and SE walls. No window embrasures survive. Joist-holes are visible on the inner face of the gable wall c. 2.5m above ground level. A lean-to shed stands against the external face of the gable wall. A series of low earthworks, evident immediately to the NE, E and S of the ruin, may be the remains of a bawn or structures associated with the house. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
