Situated on the flat summit of a ridge bordering the E side of a steep-sided ravine through which the Ballymeeny River flows. Marked as ‘Saints Grave’ on the 1837 and 1913 OS 6-inch maps and traditionally known as the burial site of St. Farannan. The cairn consists of an oblong, densely-packed heap (L 12m NNE–SSW; 4.8m WNW-ENE; H 1.05m) of small and medium-sized river cobbles. It has a rounded top and broadly slumped sides and is partly moss and sod-covered. At its NE end a modern statue of a saint stands on a concrete pedistal. A low mortared wall (L 4.5m; H 0.6m) of roughly coursed rubble extends S from the E side of the plinth to revet the NE end of the cairn. The cairn is located at the N end of a flat rectangular area (c. 24m N-S; c. 12m E-W) enclosed by a modern iron fence. A rough path leads down the ravine slope to the river. On the E bank of the river is an altar (SL011-058001-). According to local information, as part of the traditional ‘pattern’, pilgrims visited a holy well (SL011-057----) located c. 60m to NW on the W slope of the ravine. As they returned across the river, they collected a stone from a river pool, also used as a holy well (SL011-058002-) and then placed it on the cairn. Situated on the E bank of the Ballymeeny River, in the base of a steep-sided, wooded ravine. The altar consists of a small flat rock outcrop (1.4m E-W; 1m N-S; H 1m) at the base of a N-facing vertical stone cliff. It is adjacent to a natural pool in the river, traditionally used as a holy well (SL011-058002-) associated with St Farannan. There is a cairn (SL011-058----), said to be the saint’s grave, on the ridge top bordering the E side of the ravine c. 15m to S, and another holy well (SL011-057----) located on the steep W slope of the ravine c. 50m to NW. Situated on the Ballymeeny River, beneath a small waterfall, in the base of a steep-sided, wooded ravine. It consists of a natural river pool (diam. c. 10m) known as ‘Dabhach Fharannain or the vat or keeve of Farannan’, said to have been used by St Farannan for the baptism of pilgrims and for ‘personal mortification’ (O’Rorke 1889, 413). Adjacent to the pool at SE is a bedrock slab used as an altar (SL011-058001-). Another holy well (SL011-057----) is located on the steep W slope of the ravine c. 40m to NW. On the ridge top bordering the E side of the ravine, c. 20m to SE, there is a cairn (SL011-058----), traditionally said to be the saint’s grave. Situated in level wet pasture spanning the S-N flowing Ballymeeny River. Stone bridge (L 7.4m; max. H at centre 1.90m) constructed of roughly quarried limestone blocks bonded with a gravelly limestone mortar. The bridge is supported by three slightly pointed arches evenly spaced across the length of the bridge with the central arch being slightly wider and higher (H 1.5m; Wth 1.45m) while each side arch is smaller (H 1.3m; Wth 1.25m). The arch voussoirs and the key stones are undressed and undifferentiated from the rest of the fabric. The columns (L 1.25m i.e. parallel to water flow; Wth1.15m) on the S side have triangular breakwaters, now partly ruined, of similar fabric to the rest of the bridge. The top of the bridge measures only 1m in width so it is unlikely that walling ever existed. Situated on slight N-facing slope in strongly undulating pasture. Slightly raised D-shaped area (16.5m E-W; 16m N-S) enclosed by a bank of earth and stone (Wth 3.3m; int. H 0.3m). There is no fosse visible at ground level. The bank encloses the site S-NE forming the curved section of the D-shape. It follows the line of the top of a steep natural NNE facing break of slope NNW-NE. The E side of the enclosure is defined by a linear relic field boundary (Wth base 1.5m; H 0.4m) NE-SE. The original entrance is not recognisable. At an enclosure (SL011-120001-). Hut site included in the RMP (1995) but not in the SMR (1989). There are no remains of this potential monument visible at ground level. This possible promontory fort was first recorded by Casey (1999, 89-90). It consists of a truncated headland evident as a small, roughly triangular grass-covered area (c. 8m E–W; c. 3-3.5m N–S) jutting N from the E–W cliff face. The triangular projection has a raised S-sloping surface, interpreted by Casey as remnants of an inner bank. On its landward edge, it is defined by remnants of a fosse with an external bank. The fosse (Wth 1.6-1.8m, Wth base c. 1m) is evident as a shallow depression, and the external bank (W 1.8-2m) is barely discernible as a slight rise, dropping 0.3-0.4m into the fosse on its inner edge, and almost flush with surrounding field level on its outer edge. Roughly mid-way along the fosse there is a causeway (Wth 1.8m). The fosse and external bank curve in a long, shallow arc (L c. 15-16m) ending at the cliff edge on either side of the triangular projection. A post and wire fence extends along the inner edge of the fosse. The interior area of the possible promontory fort has been almost entirely eroded away. However, a projecting, roughly triangular-shaped ledge (c. 10m E–W, c. 3-4m N–S) of rock, 3m below the cliff top, gives an indication of the original size and shape of the headland. Situated on a low N-S ridge in pasture. Slightly raised circular area (21m N-S; 19.5m E-W) enclosed by a bank of earth and stone (Wth. 2.3m; H 0.4m). No fosse. There are a number of breaks in the bank but the original entrance is not recognisable. The internal ground level is uneven. Within the SW quadrant, close to the internal face of the bank, is a rectangular depression which may mark the site of a hut or house site (SL012-003005-). There is a narrow break in the bank at S (Wth. 1.4m) at the point where a field bank (SL012-003002-) abutts the site. Compiled by: Patrick F. A low, curving, disused field bank (Wth. 3-4.4m; H 0.5-1.2m) extends S from a rath (SL012-003001-) for 52m along the spine of a naturally-occurring N-S ridge. It then changes direction and runs in an E direction for 35m. The outline of a levelled N-S bank, c. 20m E of the N-S bank described above, may be traced. Between 4m and 7m N of the end of the E-W bank is a parallel length of bank (L 15m). This arrangement may represent an entrance feature.
