At the NW end of a ridge. A raised circular area (int. diam. 21m N-S) enclosed by a low earthen bank (Wth 4.6m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 1.2m) and a shallow external fosse (Wth 4m; D 0.2m). Numerous gaps occur in the bank on the S arc, and there is a possible entrance (Wth 2m) in the E arc where there is a more gradual slope down to the exterior. The fosse, marked by a thick ring of rushes, is truncated by a N-S field boundary on the E arc. The interior is also covered with rushes. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). In undulating pasture, on top of a ridge. Sections of field boundaries to the NW, E and SE of Drumcolumb church and graveyard (SL027-141001-; SL027-141002-) may be the remains of an ecclesiastical enclosure (diam. c. 350m E-W). They occur as a series of segments, rather than a single continuous field boundary. The field boundaries coincide NW-N with the base of the hill but NE-SE cut across the slope. The boundaries are vertical-sided earthen banks (Wth 2m; H 0.8m) scarped into the slope with accompanying drains (Wth 2m) on the upslope side. From NW-N the field boundary is topped with a hawthorn hedgerow. A segment of fence at the ESE has a noticeably more substantial external face (H 1.8m). The curving segment of the field boundary indicated to the SE of the church on the 1910-11 OS 6-inch map has been levelled but remains visible as a slight scarp. There is a small broken high cross (SL027-141003-) in the centre of the graveyard. A holy well (SL027-141004-) associated with St Columb, recorded near the church in 1836 (OSL, 254), remains unlocated. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). Near the W end of Drumcolumb graveyard (SL027-141002-) and within the N half of a possible ecclesiastical enclosure (SL027-141----). A rectangular church (12m E-W; 7m N-S) reduced to sod-covered foundations (H c. 0.6m) except for a section of upstanding walling (L c. 4m), built of limestone blocks, near the E end of the S wall. Remnants of a splayed window are evident at its E end. At the W end are the sod-covered foundations of a rectangular annexe (7m N-S; 6m E-W), which may have been a residence for the cleric (M. A. Timoney 2002b, 57). Running S from the SE corner are remnants of a wall, reduced to foundation level. A high cross (SL027-141003-) is 4m to E. In 1836 it was suggested that this church was probably the remains of Drumcolumb parish church (OSL, 254-5). According to local information, it was thatched within living memory and was approached by a bridle path from the S (pers. comm. M. A. Timoney). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). Within the N half of a possible ecclesiastical enclosure (SL027-141----). A roughly oval earthen platform (H c. 0.6m; 37m E-W; 27m N-S), with the ruin of a church (SL027-141001-) near its W end and a broken high cross (SL027-141003-) at its centre. There are no visible remains of any grave-markers or grave-plots. Described by O'Rorke ([1889], vol. 2, 249-50) as 'little used, if not disused'. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). Date of upload: 18 January 2008 - SL027-141003: Cross - High cross, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CSL027-141003-. In the centre of a graveyard (SL027-141002-), 4m E of the ruin of Drumcolumb church (SL027-141001-) and within the N half of an ecclesiastical enclosure (SL027-141----). Described by Crawford (1918, 177) as the 'head of a plain cross with solid recessed ring… broken in two places'. A sketch from 1914 shows these two breaks, one above and the other below the ring (SMR (1989) file). The cross (H 0.5m; Wth 0.45m; T 0.1m), which is set upright in a low cairn of stones, is now eroded and weathered and the projecting arm above the ring (at the old break) has broken off. The arms project beyond the ring on one side but not on the other. Harbison (1992b, vol. 1, 74) noted that the four 'depressions' between the arms and the ring which are present on one face are only pecked out on the other face. He also stated that 'the cross-head could be later than 1200' (ibid.). In pasture, on top of a ridge. A circular area (diam. 20m) defined along the S arc by an earthen bank evident as a low rise (Wth 4m; ext. H 0.8m). A band of rushes (Wth 3m) may indicate the line of a silted-up external fosse. The rath is visible in an aerial photograph (GSIAP, G 290-89) with a differential growth pattern indicating a bank on the S arc and an external fosse all round. There is another rath (SL027-142002-) in same field c. 50m to S. A silted up external fosse (Wth 4m) is evident as a band of rushes W-NE. The bank is clearly visible in an aerial photograph (GSIAP, G 290-89) as an arc of light-coloured vegetation NE-SSW while the external fosse is evident as a band of dark-coloured vegetation WSW-E. There is another rath (SL027-142001-) in the same field c. 50m to N. An external fosse (Wth 2m) is evident along the W arc. A recent drain cuts across the line of the fosse at NW. The entrance (Wth 2m) is at W. The S portion is raised slightly to compensate for the hillslope. The interior is bisected by a N-S field boundary.
