In pasture, on the outskirts of Dromore West village, situated on a low rise on a high bluff overlooking a bend in the River Dunneill. A castle, named ‘Dooniell Castle’ is shown at this location on the Down Survey (1655-6) map. It is marked 'Site of Dunneill Castle' on the 1837 OS 6-inch map. It was an O'Dowd castle and took its name from Neill, a chieftain of the family. It later fell into the hands of the MacSweeneys. In 1641, according to some depositions, the castle was in the charge of 'Gullne duff O'Hart of Carbury' (Kilgannon 1926, 297-8; ITA Survey 1942-4). Subcircular mound (c.30m NE-SW; c.25m NW-SE; H 1.7m at NW; 3m at SE) of earth and stone, which shows considerable evidence of past quarrying and disturbance. There is no masonry visible. Located within a graveyard (SL012-036002-). Late medieval church, which gave its name to the parish of Kilmacshalgan, associated with a 13th century friary which continued in use until the friars were expelled by Cromwell (OS Name Books, 120). It was 'repaired' in 1615 and used as a Protestant place of worship until 1812 (O'Rorke 1890, 411; Kilgannon 1926, 297). Situated in level, lowlying pasture at the base of a NE-facing slope. Oriented WNW-ESE, the church is described here according to the E-W convention. It is rectangular in plan (ext. dims. c. 18m WNW-ESE; 7.53m NNE-SSW; Wall T 0.65-1m), with walls constructed of mortared limestone. In the E wall is a tall, rounded-headed window (H c. 3m). In the W wall is a blocked-up rectangular window above a recently renovated arched doorway. On the S side of the doorway is a drawbar socket. In the N wall are three, now blocked-up, large rectangular windows, each topped with a low arches of voussoirs. In the S wall are three featureless rectangular windows. The graveyard at Dunneill, which is densely overgrown with brambles and other scrub, is rectangular in plan (dims. 35m E-W; 30m N-S) and contains headstones bearing 18th, 19th and 20th century inscriptions. Much of the N half is occupied by a medieval church (SL012-036001-). In 1956 human bones (SL012-036003-) were were uncovered during quarrying in a sandpit immediately outside of the SSW wall of the graveyard. Compiled by: Patrick F.
