A raised oval area (int. diam. 20m x 17.2m) defined by two concentric ruinous stone walls and a short section of a third wall. The inner wall (Wth 5.2m; int. H 0.8m; ext. The inner and middle walls are 2m apart. An arc of outer wall (Wth 1.7m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 0.55m) is evident 1.8m outside the middle wall SW-NW, merging with it at SW. The interior is strewn with sod-covered stones, possibly upcast from the souterrain (SL040-071003-) in the NE quadrant. A kerb circle (SL040-072----) lies c. 30m to SE. A stone field boundary extends out from the enclosure at NW. There is a steep slope immediately to E. A kerb circle (SL040-072----) is c. 20m to S. One of a linear cluster of barrows (SL040-130002-; SL040-131----, SL040-132----). A circular area (3m NE-SW; 3.4m NW-SE; H 0.25m) defined by a fosse (Wth 1m) with an external bank (Wth 1.8m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 0.4m). Although low and degraded the defining features are distinct with the central platform and the bank marked by a rich growth of grass. An embanked barrow (SL040-130002-) is immediately to NE with a possible causeway linking both barrows. A ring-barrow (SL040-131----) lies c. 50m upslope to SE and an embanked barrow (SL040-132----) c. 100m to SE on the level summit of the ridge. In rough pasture, on a level terrace at a break of slope at the NW end of a ridge. One of a linear cluster of barrows (SL040-130001-; SL040-131----, SL040-132----). There are excellent views though it is overlooked to NW by Kesh Corann Hill. A roughly D-shaped area (4.8m NW-SE; 4.3m NE-SW) defined SE-NW by a low bank (Wth c. 1.3m; int. H 0.15m; ext. H 0.3m) with a shallow external fosse (Wth c.1m) intersecting at SW with the bank of the adjoining ring-barrow (SL040-130001-). Bordered on the straight NE side by a NW-SE field boundary. The field boundary is located on the break of slope on the NE side of the ridge and there is an abrupt steep fall of ground on its NE side. The field boundary is engulfed in dense brambles and it was impossible to determine to what extent it incorporates or truncates the barrow. There is a possible causeway (Wth 1.4m) across the fosse at SW where the bank is low, linking this barrow with the adjoining ring-barrow (SL040-130001-) though there is no corresponding low section in the bank of the latter. There is a causeway across the fosse at E. Earth and stones have recently been dumped into the fosse at S. A field boundary skirts the barrow N-ESE. In pasture, on a low rise at the N edge of a limestone scarp. A ruined rectangular church consisting of a nave (ext. 8m E-W; 7.5m N-S) and chancel (ext. 6.75m E-W; 5.65m N-S) with walls (T 0.8m) of roughly coursed limestone. The NW corner (H 2.3m) is intact, while the N wall of the nave is evident only as a sod-covered wall-footing incorporating the possible E jamb of a doorway ope. The N wall of the chancel is partially rebuilt and the E wall stands to a height of 1.3m. The external face of the S wall stands to a height of c. 1.5m (6-8 courses) but the internal face (H 0.7m) has largely collapsed. The W wall is partially rebuilt. A roughly constructed wall has been built against the S wall of the chancel negating the difference in width between it and the nave. The interior is covered in rubble and contains two mature sycamore trees, the bases of which are enclosed by rough stone walls. A semicircular area (c. 7.5m N-S) of stony ground was noted on the N side of the church and there is a hollow (6m N-S; 6m E-W; D 0.8m) immediately to the NW. Remnants of earthworks (SL040-135003-) are evident around the church ESE-W, some 7m from it. A ruined stone wall (Wth 0.8m) 16m to the S of it may be the remains of an enclosing element. A road (Wth 2.3m; L c. 80m) (SL040-135004-), cut into the W-facing hillslope and flanked by ruined sod-covered stone walls, approaches it from the NW. A cross-slab (SL040-135002-), known as the 'praying stone', lies 2.8m to the ENE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). A prostrate stone slab (1.13m x 0.31m; T 0.18m) lies 2.8m ENE of the NE corner of Greenan church (SL040-135001-). It was described by Herity, Kelly and Mattenberger (1997, 120) as having the 'remains of carved crosses on two faces, one part of the lower stem of a cross and the other a crudely carved cross'. The cross stem is 19cm high and 3cm wide and the crudely carved cross is 21cm high and 13cm wide (pers. comm. M. A. Timoney). This cross-slab was mentioned in 1836 as 'a large stone, which is rendered famous by curing people of a pain in the back' (OSNB vol. 2, 383). The slab is named 'Stone' on the 1838 OS 6-inch map and 'Praying stone' on the 1914 OS 6-inch map. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). Immediately to the N of Greenan church (SL040-135001-) the ground is uneven and stony and traces of the outline of a semicircular area (c. 7.5m N-S), appended to the church, are evident. To the NW of the church, and dug into the low rise on which the church stands, is an anomalous subcircular sunken area (6m N-S; 6m E-W; D 0.8m), partially infilled with stone, and with a stony rim along its N side. There is a gap (Wth 1.4m) at W and another narrower gap (Wth 0.9m) at E which has traces of possible stone facing. The nature of this feature is unclear. Immediately to the E of the chancel is a narrow strip of ground (Wth c. 7m) defined by sod-covered wall footings (Wth 0.9m) on the N and E sides. This strip extends for a short distance along the E end of the S side of the church, c. 7m S of the church where it is defined by a barely discernible rise. Outside this strip, at a distance of 16m from the church and following a natural contour, is a shallow arc (c. 44m) of a ruined wall (Wth 0.8m) ESE-W, indicated on the 1914 edition of the OS 6-inch map, that may be the remnant of a larger enclosure. In pasture, at the base of a slope. An unenclosed spring well, covered with overgrowth, and with an ash tree growing out of it. In 1836 it was recorded that there was formerly a 'station' at the well on every Easter Sunday (OSL, 149) while in 1942-4 it was noted that there had been no pilgrimages in the memory of the oldest resident (ITA). There is a local tradition that St Patrick threw a stone from Toomour (SL040-140001-) and the spring rose from where it fell (pers. comm. M. A. Timoney). Also according to local information, c. 30 rounded stones (max. diam. c. 0.3m) from this well were built into the wall outside a public house in Knockoconor townland c. 1.3km to NW (pers. comm. M. A. Timoney). A stretch of the road known as Bothar an Corann (SL033-145----) is c. 40m to the SW. Another holy well called 'Tobernamulla' (SL040-133----) is c. 420m to NW.
