In undulating rough pasture, on a rise. A circular area (diam. c. 20m) defined along the N and NE arcs by the remains of an earthen bank (ext. H 0.8m) with a slight internal lip. The interior is completely covered with overgrowth. In undulating pasture. According to the SMR (1989) file, the word 'fort' is hand-written on the NMI copy of the 1838 edition of the OS 6-inch map. There are no archaeological remains visible at ground level. Compiled by: Archaeological Survey Unit, UCC with revisions by Patrick F. In rolling drumlin pasture, in the S half of Killerry graveyard (SL021-011002-). The ruin of this rectangular church (ext. c. 19m E-W; 7.35m N-S) is of at least two phases: the N and E walls (Wth c. 0.9m) are considerably thicker than the S wall (Wth 0.55m) and a cross-wall (Wth 0.6m). Also the N wall is constructed of uncoursed cyclopean masonry; probably matching this are massive quoins at the NE corner and the lower courses of the E wall. The church appears to have been subsequently rebuilt, possibly in the 18th century, when the E wall was built up to a gable. This gable had a central window ope which held a wooden-framed light. Also at this time the church may have been reduced in size by the insertion of the cross-wall, 10.75m from the E gable. The upper part of the S wall and most of the return of the W wall have fallen. A slight sod-covered rise, c. 3.4m to the W from the present end of the N wall, probably marks the original line of the W wall, which may have incorporated a room at the rear of the church (M. A. Timoney 2002b, 57). The interior is under grass; against the N wall is a flat graveslab dated 1830, and there are two headstones of more recent date. The ruin is that of the parish church of Killerry. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). On the W side of a road. A rectangular graveyard (60m E-W; 55m N-S) enclosed by a low stone wall. The ruin of the parish church of Killerry (SL021-011001-) forms part of the S boundary wall. The graveyard is under grass and contains many 19th- and 20th-century headstones and some low uninscribed grave-markers as well as several chest-tombs and several recumbent graveslabs. It is still in occasional use. In the NE quadrant are several curing stones and a straining stone (SL021-011003-). According to Wood-Martin (1892, 364), this graveyard was 'cleared and levelled' in the 19th century. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). In the NE quadrant of a graveyard (SL021-011002-). Set into the upper surface of a thin stone slab (D c. 0.05m; 0.75m x 0.8m), now broken and sod-covered, are two round (diam. c. 0.25m) and five oval (c. 0.15m x c. 03m) stones known as the 'Curing Stones' (Walsh 1999-2000, 8). Amongst these is a smaller angular stone. Adjacent to this arrangement is a rectangular stone (L c. 0.3m) to which is tied a piece of string, known as the 'straining thread'. The string or thread is reputed to cure strains, pains, and aches. These are part of a curative ritual (see O'Rorke [1889], 319-20; Wood-Martin 1892, 364-5; Crawford 1913a, 267-8). The tradition is associated with St Patrick and according to the caretaker in 1913, there was 'a spring of good water under the slab' (Crawford 1913a, 267). Another 'straining stone' (SL021-025004-) is located 3.5km to NE. (Weir 1980, 209-10) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). On a slight rise, at the base of a W-facing slope. A semicircular platform (H c. 1m), covered with overgrowth. Indicated on the 1913 OS 6-inch map as a semicircular area (32m N-S; 15m E-W) defined by linear field boundaries on the W and N arcs, by a curved field boundary on the S arc and by hachures on the E arc. On the E-facing slope of a high ridge. An arc of stone footings NNW-SSE defines a semicircular area (diam. c. 20m) truncated at S by a stone field boundary wall (H c. 1m). Included in the SMR (1989) as an unclocated monument with the classification 'Sweathouse'. Not listed in the RMP (1995). Not marked on any edition of the OS 6-inch map. In a wood, at the base of a slope on the bank of a stream. An overgrown semicircular drystone structure built in a semicircular area dug out of the side of the hill. It has an oval interior (int. 2.2m x 1.2m; H 2.2m) with a hole through the top of the corbelled roof. The entrance (Wth 0.55m; H 0.7m) faces the stream. Two lines of low stones form a rough passage (L 1.8m; Wth 1m) between the stream and the entrance. This is probably post-1700 AD in date.
