A crescent-shaped hollow at SE is due to quarrying. There are now no visible remains of the MacDonagh castle which was demolished to provide stone for 'all the houses of Cartron, near Tubberscanavin', this stone 'having been tastefully hammered and chiselled' (O'Rorke [1889], vol. 2, 234-5). The castle was indicated on the Down Survey (1655-6) barony map as a small single tower. In pasture, near the top of a W-facing slope in the NW corner of a field. Indicated on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as an embanked circular area (diam. c. 30m) and on the 1914 OS 6-inch map as a roughly triangular area defined by straight field boundaries on W and NE sides and by a curving bank E-S. The present remains consist of a raised area (L 23m; Wth 16m) with slight traces of an earthen bank (Wth 2m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 1m). In 1836 it was recorded that this rath was used as a children's burial ground (SL026-066002-) (OSNB vol. 1, 143). In pasture, on the E end of a ridge, overlooking Toberscanavan Loughs to E and SE. A circular platform (int. diam. 19m) enclosed on top by the remains of an earthen bank (Wth 2-3m; H 0.2m). The platform is highest (H 3m) along the S arc. Traces of an external fosse (Wth 1.5-2m; D 0.3-0.4m) are evident at the base of the platform along the W arc. The interior slopes down to W and is bisected on a NW-SE axis by the remains of a stone-built field boundary. A rectangular islet is indicated on the 1838 OS 6-inch map at the narrow 'waist' of Toberscanavan Lough. The lake is now separated into two smaller lakes due to the lower water levels. The area in which the islet was situated is planted with trees and no visible remains of a crannog were identified. This monument was discovered during ploughing in 1946. A large stone, c.015m beneath ground level was removed revealing the cist below. The stone was subsequently replaced. Members of the Sligo Archaeological Society visited the monument and noted bones on the capstone and in its vicinity. They subsequently emptied the contents of the cist. The monument was investigated by Prendergast on behalf of the National Museum of Ireland in the same year. Subrectangular short cist (dims. 0.51m NE-SW; 0.31m NW-SE; D 0.25m) whose sides were defined principally by four slabs set on edge. The floor was paved with a single slab. According to the landowner a flat slab had been placed between the SW side slab and the capstone. The large capstone (dims. 0.71m x 0.48m; T 0.1m) was subrectangular in plan. The pit dug to house the cist measured 0.75m x 0.71m. The cist itself and the area immediately surrounding it yielded cremated bone, which when analysed, were shown to be those of an adult male (1946:93:2). More cremated bone lay beneath the floor slab. Ten sherds of pottery were also uncovered from the cist. In the area outside of the grave was a miniature vessel (1946:93:1), two sherds of pottery and a tiny piece of charcoal.
