Listed in the SMR (1989) and RMP (1995) as 'Earthworks'. Two circular enclosure-like features are visible on an aerial photograph (Air Corps AP, V 197/163-4). These are not indicated on any edition of the OS 6-inch maps and are not visible at ground level. It is possible that they were removed during land reclamations in the 1980s or in the course of the construction of the N4 in the 1990s and subsequent landscaping in 2000. - SL020-166001: Promontory fort - inland, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CSL020-166001-. On an elongated ridge, which is enclosed on three sides by the Ballysadare River (which emerges through the Collooney gap in the Ox Mountains) and on the fourth side by a silted marshy lake. The S side of the ridge, which rises 4m above the surrounding marsh, was cut off from the remainder by a bank and external fosse, which enclosed an area 85m N-S by at least 75m E-W (cut by a railway line at W). According to local information, this bank and ditch were bulldozed in 1978 (Mount 2002, 106). The inland promontory fort was partially excavated in 1994 (ibid., 103-116) prior to the construction of the Collooney to Carraroe by-pass road (N4). The road was realigned to the E in order to cause minimal damage to the interior of the fort (ibid., 103). Based on evidence from aerial photography and the excavation of the fosse, Mount (ibid., 106-7) concluded that the fort's defences consisted of a stone-faced earthen bank as well as the external fosse and that there was an entrance with a causeway (Wth 6.5m) midway along them. Excavation revealed that the fosse had a maximum width of 5m at the top and of 2.08m at the base. The excavations within the fort also revealed a large quantity of butchered animal remains, iron tools and nails, and vast quantities of iron smelting slag and furnace bottoms, indicating that this was an important industrial centre (ibid., 113). An animal bone found in the fosse produced a radiocarbon determination of 1260+/-40 BP (GrA-2452; 660 to 880 cal AD 2 sigma) (ibid., 106). Within the promontory fort is a burial ground (SL020-166002-), two cairns (SL020-166008-, SL020-166009-) and four hut sites (SL020-166004-). A corn-drying kiln (SL020-166003-) was found within the E half of the interior. Subsequent to Mount's excavation, unauthorised quarrying was carried out at the promontory fort and in 1996 archaeological testing of an undisturbed finger of ground to the N of the area previously excavated, revealed three 'ditches' (Channing 1998b, 156). Though not fully excavated, Channing suggests that these features 'probably relate to [the] inland promontory fort' (ibid.). According to Mount (2002, 105), this promontory fort was well sited to control river traffic from Ballysadare Bay along the Ballysadare River and to guard a possible river crossing between the Barony of Tirerrill to the east and Leyny to the west. (Mount 1994d, 22-3; Mount 1995d, 78-9). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). Within an inland promontory fort (SL020-166001-), on an elongated ridge, on the W bank of and at a bend of the Ballysadare River. This burial ground was uncovered in 1994 during the excavation of the promontory fort prior to the construction of the Collooney to Carraroe by-pass road (N4) (Mount 2002, 103). The importance of the discovery resulted in the realignment of the road to the E in order to cause minimal damage to this and adjacent sites (ibid.). The inhumations were of three main types: crouched, flexed and extended. In most cases the heads were oriented to the W or SW. The burials were mainly in pits, which in a few cases were outlined with stones. Some of the burials contained grave-goods, either in metal or stone, and others contained animal bones. A minimum of 185 inhumation burials was recorded, 51 examples were extended inhumations with the heads to the west and the feet to the east, two individuals were extended on their sides, three burials were crouched and three were flexed. There were 11 examples of skulls without any other body parts. Eighty-two burials were disturbed and 13 were disarticulated. Twenty burials were left in situ. At some time the burial ground was enclosed by a subrectangular enclosure (23m N-S; 19m E-W) which is indicated on the 1913 OS 6-inch map in the SE quadrant of the inland promontory fort. The enclosing drystone wall (max. T 2.2m; H 0.95m) is composed of spaced uprights and drystone-walling of boulders with a rubble or earthen core. The earthen core contained a substantial number of artifacts and organic remains that were derived from an occupation surface. The wall overlay the old ground surface where a number of burials, which predate its construction, were excavated. The blocked entrance was discovered during the excavation in the S half of the W side and is marked by two large upright stones, 0.72m apart, with three low jamb-stones. The enclosure was subsequently reinstated to its original form prior to excavation and the entrance feature was reconstructed. There are two cairns (SL020-166008-; SL020-166009-) at the centre of the burial ground. The town of Ballysadare is c. 600m to NW. Discovered in 1994 during the excavation of the promontory fort and described as a stone structure (L 2.8m NW-SE), consisting of a series of upright stones surrounding an area of burnt soil and charcoal (Mount 1995d, 78-9). The kiln was aligned with the flue opening to the NW and the oval furnace (0.9m x 1.3m) to the SE; it contained a charcoal-rich layer with fragments of burnt bone, sand and seeds that extended to the SE over an area 7.5m N-S by c. 4m E-W (ibid.). In the centre of a burial ground (SL020-166002-) which is located in the interior of the inland promontory fort (SL020-166001-). The easternmost of two cairns (see SL020-166009-) discovered and partially excavated during excavation of the complex in 1994 (Mount 1995d, 78-9; 2002, 103-116). A roughly circular cairn (4.5m E-W; 4.2m N-S; max. H 0.54m) situated on the old ground surface, directly under the sod layer, consisting of limestone boulders and flat slabs in a matrix of dark brown humus. A substantial quantity of stone immediately to the E of the cairn may have been tumble from it thus reducing the height of the cairn somewhat. Cremated human bone and charcoal flecks were found on the surface of the cairn directly under the sod but the bulk of it was recovered from a small depression formed by a number of stones. This cremation has been dated to 680 to 880 cal. AD (Mount 2002, 114). Finds included chert, flint, iron nails and a decorated gold and amber disc. In contrast to the surrounding burial ground, no inhumation burials were found in the old ground surface beneath the cairn which 'probably indicates that this feature pre-dates the inhumations' (ibid., 107). The E and W cairns were linked by a 6m long arrangement of angular stones on the northern side, possibly a wall footing, which continued to the E as a collapsed wall partly enclosing the eastern cairn. A roughly circular cairn (3.2m E-W; 3m N-S; max. H 0.4m) of large stones (diam. c. 0.7m) in a brown humus matrix from which quartz flakes, animal bone and iron and iron slag were recovered. The cairn covered a possible furnace base and at least one child burial. The E and W cairns were linked by a 6m long arrangement of angular stones on the N side, possibly a wall footing, which continued to the E as a collapsed wall partly enclosing the eastern cairn. Described as a kidney-shaped mound (13.2m E-W; 10.4m N-S; H 0.54m) of heat-shattered stones in a charcoal-enriched soil, indented on its S side (McConway 2000, 280). A rescue excavation was carried out in 2000 (Deevy 2001, 304) as the fulacht fia was in an area proposed as a landfill site. Excavation revealed a series of wooden planks and posts likely to represent the remains of the base of a trough under the S side of the mound and a discontinuous ring of thirty wooden stakes, c. 0.3m apart, which formed an enclosure (diam. 15m) around the mound (ibid.). Situated in marsh c. 20m NW of a bend in the Ballysadare River. The remains consist of a central pear-shaped sunken area (15m E-W; 27m N-W; D c. 1-1.2m) with the narrow end opening to the N. It is enclosed by a raised, flat berm (W c. 5m) and external bank (W c. 5m; H. 1-1.5m). The bank is best preserved along the E, S and W sides and fades out gradually at the N end where the depression opening is situated. The E side of the monument was planted with trees in 2000 as part of the formal landscaping of the area following on the erection of the art work 'Regeneration' installed after the completion of the N4 roadworks. The exact nature of this feature is unknown and the possibility that it is of modern construction cannot be ruled out. The sides of the depression are relatively steep and it is possible that a pre-existing raised enclosure had its centre excavated. The inland promontory fort excavated by C. Detached three-bay two-storey rendered former glebe house, built c. 1820, with extensive renovations c. 1845. Canted single-storey bay windows to either side of central full-height projecting bay to south (front) elevation square at ground floor and broached to canted at first floor, full-width two-storey return to north (rear) with M-profile roof, terminating in single-storey garden room c. 1990 to north-east and single-storey porch to north-west, canopy over side entrance door to east elevation of return. Pitched slate roofs, hipped to bays, porch and garden room, clay ridge tiles, painted smooth-rendered chimneys with corbelled limestone caps and octagonal yellow clay pots, cast-iron rainwater goods, dressed limestone verge stones on moulded springers, weather vane to central bay. Painted smooth-rendered walling on shallow plinth. Square-head window openings, painted stone sills, painted timber casement windows. Square-headed entrance door opening, painted timber double doors each with three raised-and-fielded panels, plain-glazed fanlight over. Set in landscaped grounds rising to north with east gable facing road, rubble stone boundary wall.

Attached five-bay single-storey thatched house, built c. 1890. Now in use as a public house. Porch to front (east) elevation, one-and-a-half storey house to south, single-storey corrugated iron-roofed extensions to rear. Straw pegged thatched roof, unpainted smooth-rendered corbelled chimneystack, concrete skews. Painted smooth-rendered walling.
