In pasture, on a gentle SE-facing slope overlooking Lough Gara and within a graveyard (SL046-014002-) and an ecclesiastical enclosure (SL046-014003-). The only apparent mention of a church here comes from 1836 when it was described as 'the ruins of an old Church...' (OSL, 235). It is not indicated on the 1838 OS 6-inch map, nor is any church ruin mentioned by O'Rorke ([1889], vol. 2, 383-4). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). Date of upload: 18 January 2008 - SL046-014002: Graveyard, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CSL046-014002-. The graveyard is indicated on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as polygonal in plan while on the 1914 OS 6-inch map it is indicated as oval in plan. The remains consist of an oval area (76.4m E-W; 68.7m N-S) enclosed by a mortared stone wall (Wth 0.45m; H 1m). There is an arched gateway at SE, above which is a date plaque inscribed '1883'. The headstones are mostly 20th century in date and are accessed by concrete paths. Scattered amongst them are several small uninscribed grave-markers, mostly rectangular though a few are roughly cross-shaped. A graveslab (SL046-014007-) with a simple incised cross on it, which was within the interior, cannot be located. A low stone-built seat (1.5m N-S; 1.26m E-W; H 0.45m), in an area of rough uneven ground close to the enclosing wall at WSW, marks the location of a corn-drying kiln (SL046-014008-), which was found here during a graveyard clean-up in 1985-6. The N half of the interior is level with the external ground level while the S half is raised c. 0.6m above it. The exact location of the site of the church (SL046-014001-) is unknown though the most likely location is the central area, surrounded by a path, where few graves occur (pers. comm. J. Enright). There is a souterrain (SL046-014004-) in the NW quadrant and a bullaun stone (SL046-014005-) outside the enclosing wall at NNE. A quernstone (SL046-014006-) was also found in the graveyard. In 1836 this graveyard was recorded as 'a burial ground for children, strangers and poor people' (OSL, 235) and was then only in occasional use (OSNB vol. 1, 414). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). Date of upload: 18 January 2008 - SL046-014003: Ecclesiastical enclosure, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CSL046-014003-. In pasture, immediately to SW of the village of Monasteraden, located on a gentle SE-facing slope, overlooking Lough Gara to the S. The remains of 'Cashelnamonastragh', consist of a roughly circular enclosure (77m E-W; c. 71m N-S) defined by a low flat-topped sod-covered rise (Wth c. 2m; H c. 0.5m) on top of which the enclosing wall of Monasterredan graveyard (SL046-014002-) is built. The sod-covered rise projects from under the internal wall-face of the graveyard NW-NE and from under its external face NE-ESE. It is truncated at SE by a cottage garden and by an access road. The graveyard wall respects the outer edge of the rise S-W. There is a souterrain (SL046-014004-) in the NW quadrant of the interior, a corn-drying kiln (SL046-014008-) in the interior at WSW and a bullaun stone (SL046-014005-) immediately outside the enclosure at NNE. The precise location of a cross-slab (SL046-014007-), which was found in the interior, is not known. In 1836 the enclosure was recorded as a 'cashel' though 'very little of it remains' (OSL, 419). Little is known about this early ecclesiastical foundation. Based on the placename ‘Monasteredan’, O’Rorke (1889, vol. 2, 380-1) speculated that this is the site of a monastery founded by St Aidan, possibly Aedhán Ó Fiachrach who died in AD 570, a theory repeated by Gwynn and Hadcock (1970, 398). However, recent research has refuted this interpretation of the placename: The historical evidence suggests that the name derives from either ‘Mainistir Raodáin’ or the local version recorded in 1836 ‘Mainistir Réudáin’, standardised to Mainistir Réadáin by the first placenames order in 1975. O’Rorke’s theory, therefore, is not supported by the placename evidence, and, in this regard, it is notable that a connection with Saint Aodhán was not recorded locally during the course of the 1836 Ordnance Survey (Pers. Comm. 2020: Dr. Conchubhar Ó Crualaoich, The Placenames Branch, DCHG). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). In the NW quadrant of an ecclesiastical enclosure (SL046-014003-) and graveyard (SL046-014002-). A rectangular structure (c. 20m NE-SW; c. 5m NW-SE) is indicated in the N half of the enclosure on the 1838 OS 6-inch map and annotated 'Cave or Covered Passage'. A broad low sod-covered rise, gently sloping down to NNE, is evident. On the W side of this rise is an opening through a lintelled roof into a drystone-built passage (L c. 5m; max. Wth 1.5m; H 1.08m). The passage extends roughly E-W for c. 4m, then curves gently to SW for a further c. 1.5m. The SW end is constructed of a single slab. At the E end of the N wall is a lintelled opening (Wth 0.47m; H 0.61m) flanked by narrow stone jambs. This opening is blocked by earth. In the centre of the E wall is a lintelled creepway (L 0.5m E-W; Wth 0.64m; H 0.49m) leading to a rectangular drystone-built chamber (c. 1.5m N-S; c. 5m E-W) roofed with lintels and flooded at the time of inspection. A prostrate lozenge-shaped slab (1.09m x 0.71m; T 0.17m) with a roughly central shallow depression (0.35m x 0.4m; D 0.008m) in its upper surface. There is a similar bullaun stone on Inishmurray island (SL001-001010-). An upright stone slab (H 0.55m) shaped like an inverted triangle, tapering from a width of 0.85m at the top to 0.4m at the bottom, incised with a simple Greek cross (Wth 0.23m; H 0.215) with T-shaped terminals. The cross-slab was recorded as missing in 2005 (Egan et al. 2005). It was located in the SW quadrant of the graveyard in 2020 (pers. comm. C. Corlett). At WSW within Monasterredan graveyard (SL046-014002-) an ecclesiastical enclosure (SL046-014003-). A circular drystone-built kiln was uncovered during a graveyard clean-up undertaken by the Monasterredan Community Development Association in 1985-6. A considerable quantity of charcoal and charred cereal grains were clearly visible. The kiln was sealed off with a damp-proof course and a stone seat (1.5m N-S; 1.26m E-W; H 0.45m) was built on top of it to mark its location and to prevent damage. (pers. comm. J. In stony pasture, on the summit of a ridge with views of Lough Gara. An oval area (int. diam. 30m N-S; 23.4m E-W) enclosed by a stone wall evident as a double concentric line (T 2.2m) of contiguous limestone boulders (int. H 0.2-0.3m; ext. H 0.1-0.2m). A narrow field wall replaces the cashel wall along the NW and SW arcs. According to local information, much of the wall was removed c. 1939 and the stone used for road construction. In rough pasture, on elevated ground overlooking the eastern shores of Lough Gara. The cashel is not visible at ground level but the area is densely overgrown in parts and difficult to inspect. A curve in the field boundary wall (Wth 1.5m; H 1.2m) respects or incorporates the E arc of the cashel. This section of drystone walling is more substantial than the surrounding field walls. Indicated as an embanked circular enclosure (diam. c. 25m) on the 1838 OS 6-inch map and as an arc of field boundary NE-SE on the 1914 OS 6-inch map.
