On the S side the outer bank has been strengthened by a series of stones forming a retaining structure. Original entrance not recognisable. Recorded by a fieldworker in 1991 as a circular raised area (diam. 16m) enclosed by a fosse (Wth 4m) and an external bank of earth (Wth 5m; int. H 1m). The external bank is absent NW-NE and incorporated into modern field boundaries at E and W. The interior is domed and rises to a maximum height of 2m above the fosse at S. (SMR file). On a slight rise in gently undulating pasture on slight S-facing slope. Oval-shaped, slightly raised area (dims. 24m N-S; 20m E-W) defined by an internal earth and stone bank (Wth 3.45m; int. H 0.45m; ext. H 0.5m). At the external base of the bank is a berm (Wth 3.7-4m). Immediately outside the berm are a fosse (Wth 4.4m) and an external earth and stone bank (Wth 4.7m; int. H 1.6m; ext. H 1.5-1.9 m). An ENE-WSW orientated drystone field wall lies along the top of the outer bank from SSE-S-SSW. A possible souterrain (SL005-011002-) is located on the SW side of the interior. In the garden of a private house. This bullaun stone consists of a sandstone boulder (0.68m by 0.66m; H 0.35m), rather rounded or subcircular in shape and profile, with a rough, pitted surface. There is a circular hollow (diam. 0.24m; D 0.15m) off-centre in the upper surface. The sides of the hollow appear to be relatively vertical towards the top, but incline gently inwards to merge seamlessly with a gently rounded base. According to local information, this bullaun stone came from Doonowney townland. It was found amongst stone rubble in the garden of a 19th-century vernacular stone cottage, while the cottage was being demolished. The exact origin of the stone, however, is uncertain (pers. comm. Leo Leydon, 2019). Hipped slate roof centred on pitched slate roof (north); pitched (gabled) slate roof (porch), clay ridge tiles, paired rendered central chimney stacks having cut-limestone stringcourses below capping supporting yellow terracotta octagonal pots, decorative timber bargeboards to gable (porch), and no rainwater goods surviving on slightly overhanging ogee-detailed exposed timber rafters. Rendered walls on overgrown plinth with margined tooled cut-limestone quoins to corners. Round-headed window opening (porch) with cut-limestone sill, and concealed dressings framing fixed-pane timber fitting. Square-headed opposing door openings ("cheeks") with concealed dressings framing timber panelled doors. Square-headed window openings with cut-limestone sills, and margined tooled cut-limestone block-and-start surrounds framing six-over-six timber sash windows. Square-headed window openings (remainder) with cut-limestone sills, and concealed dressings framing six-over-six timber sash windows. Interior including (ground floor): central hall retaining carved timber surrounds to door openings framing timber panelled doors, cantilevered staircase on a dog leg plan with balustrade now missing, carved timber surround to door opening to half-landing framing timber panelled door, and carved timber surrounds to door openings to landing framing timber panelled doors. Detached six-bay single-storey rendered National School, built 1951. Symmetrical single-storey flat-roofed extension c. 1970 to front (north) and sides with three-bay central section and forward-projecting single-bay east and west classroom wings. Pitched slate roof, clay ridge tiles, painted smooth-rendered corbelled chimneystack, profiled extruded aluminium gutters c.2000 on painted timber eaves fascia and soffit. Painted roughcast walling, painted smooth-rendered plinth, date plaque to front elevation inscribed 'Scoil Bride Carna 1951'. Square-headed window openings, painted smooth-rendered slightly projecting reveals, painted masonry sills, painted timber casement windows c. 1990. Ventilation lancets in east and west gables, painted timber louvres. Square-headed door opening in extension, coursed squared rubble stone jambs, flat concrete canopy, varnished vertically-sheeted hardwood door c. 1990. Set in grounds, concrete paths, playground and grass area to south. Single-storey shelter to rear, flat concrete slab roof, painted roughcast walling, square-headed full-length opening to north with three circular equally-spaced columns.
