(In the Carrowkeel-Kesh Corann passage tomb cemetery). On the summit of Kesh Corann with a magnificent outlook in all directions. Within and close to the N edge of a hilltop enclosure (SL040-009---). This is a circular cairn (diam. 26m; H c. 4-5m) at the top of which there is a small pile of stones, apparently a 19th-century OS trigonometrical station. A hole (4m x 3m; D 0.5m) has been dug into the E slope of the cairn and there is a larger hole extending from the summit downslope to the ENE. The cairn stands on what appears to be a prepared platform (diam. c. 35m), the perimeter of which is almost 5m beyond the base of the cairn. The platform is now substantially grass-grown and in places, especially at the N, peat-grown. It is c. 0.8m high around the greater part of the perimeter but reaches 2m high at the N over falling ground. Kerbstones are intermittently visible along or just inside the platform perimeter, in particular on the southern side. (Ó Nualláin 1989, 84) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). In heather-covered blanket bog at the N end of a level plateau on top of Kesh Corann. A large pear-shaped area (c. 170m N-S; c. 170m E-W) defined by a low stony wall (Wth 2.5m; H 0.4m) engulfed in blanket bog. The wall can be traced as a slight rise SW-SE and short sections of it are exposed at NW revealing a jumble of stones and slabs. The wall coincides with a natural break of slope NNW-E, marking the N edge of the plateau. At N, it tops a vertical scarp of exposed bedrock (H 1.7m). The wall is difficult to trace SE-SW and it appears that portions of it may be covered in bog. A possible passage tomb (SL040-008----) lies within and close to the N end of this hilltop enclosure. Condit, Gibbons and Timoney (1991, 62) noted that while this enclosure follows the contour of the limestone terrace on the hill it 'does not seem to exploit the natural defenses of the hill'. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). On the flat-topped spur of Kesh Corann Hill. An oval cairn (8.3m x 7.3m; H 1.1m). Stones have been removed from the centre of the cairn leaving a hollow (7.8m x 1.2m) in which a limestone outcrop is visible. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). In pasture, on a slight platform with higher ground on all sides. A raised circular area (int. diam. 20.3m x 20.2m) enclosed by a ruinous sod-covered inner stone wall (Wth 1.9m; int. H 0.75m; ext. H 1.9m). At N, the wall turns outwards to form an entrance passage (L 7.5m; Wth 2.1m) with remains of internal stone facing and is approached by a ramp. The remains of an outer stone wall (Wth 2.25m; int. H 0.55m; ext. H 0.65m) are evident along the W arc, c. 4.5m outside the base of the inner wall, and possibly incorporated into a field boundary along the E arc. Large quantities of stone from the wall have tumbled downslope from the platform. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). Listed in the SMR (1989) and classified as 'Enclosure Possible'. Depicted on the 1838 edition of the OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure. Upon inspection in 1993 no remains of an enclosure was identified. A re-examination of the 1838 map suggests that what is indicated here is a sand-pit or quarry. On a slight terrace on the S slope of Kesh Corann and commanding an extensive outlook to the S. This is a W-facing gallery (L 6m) which decreases in height to the E. There is a jamb-like stone at the W end of the gallery. This articulates with the N side of the structure which is now represented by at least six partly concealed orthostats. A low backstone closes the E end of the gallery. Its S side is concealed by a spread of stones and may have collapsed. A low orthostat outside the N end of the backstone may be a buttress-stone. Some 1.5m S of the backstone there are two low stones. These seem to be the remains of an outer wall. There are some remains of mound around the S half of the structure.
