- SL025-051001: Cairn - unclassified, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CSL025-051001-. In level pasture, with good views of the surrounding countryside. Indicated as a circular hillock (diam. c. 40m) on the 1838 OS 6-inch map with the accompanying name 'Carn'. The hillock is named 'Sheeaun' on the 1914 OS 6-inch map and the cairn as 'Carn (site of)'. The hillock (c. 30m N-S; c. 20m E-W; H c. 5m) is now almost entirely quarried away due to gravel extraction and there are no visible remains of the cairn. A short cist (SL025-051002-) containing two burial urns was found within the cairn (Wood-Martin 1887-8, 273). Wood-Martin (1887-8, 273) recorded the discovery, in the 1870s, of a cist 'on a hill called Sheeawn' (SL025-051001-) which 'contained two urns, one inside of the other'. There are no visible remains of this cist. It is one of three cists known from Rathbarran townland (see SL025-071002- and SL025-151----). In undulating pasture, on the E side of a low rise. A slightly raised circular area (diam. 29.5m) enclosed by an inner bank, an intervening fosse and a counterscarp bank. The inner bank (Wth 4.4m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 1.5m) is low internally all round and is levelled for a short section to W. Traces of internal stone revetment were noted. The fosse and counterscarp bank (Wth 2.4m; int. H 0.75m; ext. H 0.2m) are evident SSW-N. An E-W field boundary at S obscures the line of the fosse. There is a narrow gap (Wth 1.4m) in the bank at SSE, partially lined with stones. The interior slopes down to E. There is a thick band of nettles inside the bank in the W half of the interior. There is a heap of stones (3m E-W; 1.5m N-S; H 0.4m) roughly in the centre of the N half of the interior and another similar heap (diam. 2m; H 0.2m) in the S half, to E of which is rough arc of stones (C 4m). The bank is ringed with hawthorn bushes. In undulating pasture, on a natural rise and densely covered with undergrowth and trees. The natural rise is utilised to form a high flat-topped circular platform (24.6m NW-SE) defined on top by an earthen bank (Wth 3m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 4.8m) S-N and by a scarp N-S. A tumble of loose stones was noted on the external slope of the bank. The base of the platform is enclosed all round by a fosse (Wth 3m) with an external bank (Wth 5m; int. H 1.5m; ext. H c. 3.6m). A tumble of loose stones is evident on the internal and external slopes of this bank, most noticeably at NW. The interior is mostly level with a slight slope down to SE. A shallow depression (Wth 1.4m; D 0.15m) skirts the bank internally S-N. At NNE a sunken pathway (Wth 1.6m) through the outer bank leads to a series of steps, bordered on the W side by remnants of a low stone wall, which have been cut into the external slope of the platform. Another pathway approaches the barrow from the road to the E and curves up the slope of the hill to an eroded section of the outer bank at SE where a causeway (Wth 1.8m) crosses the fosse. A field boundary abuts the outer bank at WNW and another crosses the fosse at SSE. A large boulder (1.3m x 1.4m; H 0.75m) in the fosse at NNE is known locally as a mass-rock (SL025-071003-). A cist (SL025-071002-) containing an urn is said to have been found on the summit (Wood-Martin 1887-8, 270-72). - SL025-071002: Cist, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CSL025-071002-. Wood-Martin (1887-8, 270-72) described an urn, then in the museum of the Royal Irish Academy, which was found on the summit of an ancient rath (presumably SL025-071001-) in Rathbarran townland. The urn was discovered within a 'square coffer of flagstones placed on edge' and measured '43/4 inches [0.12m] high, 6 inches [0.15m] broad and 53/4 [0.14m] wide in the mouth' (ibid., 271-2). It was decorated all over, except for the base, with incised lines and 'enriched about the middle with five raised bands, more or less ornamented with chevrons, and wavy oblique lines' (ibid., 271). It contained cremated bones and a stone disc and a polished stone axehead was found with it. There are no visible remains of this cist. It is one of three cists known from Rathbarran townland (see SL025-051002- and SL025-151----). Not included in the SMR (1989) but listed in the RMP (1995) and classified 'Mass Rock'. In the fosse at the NNE of Rathbarran barrow (SL025-071001-) is a large boulder (1.3m x 1.4m; H 0.75m). It is known by the people in the locality as a mass-rock. The classification mass-rock is likely to be post-1700 AD in date. Detached stone Church of Ireland church, built c. 1767, altered c. 1830. Cruciform plan, single-bay nave, gabled north and south single-bay transepts, semi-circular apse to east, three stage tower to west, crypt to east. Pitched slate roofs, artificial ridge tiles, ashlar limestone corbelled chimneystacks to tansept gables each with twin diagonally-set shafts, ashlar limestone verges, half-round copper gutters on drive-in brackets on moulded ashlar limestone eaves corbel course. Roughly squared rubble limestone walling, ashlar limestone eaves string continuing across gables and around tower, string to tower below belfry, crenellated parapet to tower. Round-headed window openings, blind recesses to west and east elevations of transepts and west elevation of tower, limestone sills, tooled ashlar limestone Gibbsian surrounds, stained glass lights to apse and transepts, uPVC fixed casement windows to nave, painted timber louvres to tower. Square-headed window openings to crypt, tooled ashlar limestone surrounds, limestone sills, central mullion, painted fixed twelve-pane timber casement windows. Round-headed door opening, tooled ashlar limestone Gibbsian surround, hardwood timber double-doors c. 1980 each with five raised-and-fielded panels, plain-glazed fanlight, stone-flagged access ramp with railing. On slightly-elevated site, lawns and trees to grounds, bitmac paths, recumbent, upright and table tombs to graveyard, rubble limestone boundary walls with alternating large and small rubble copings, simple round-topped gate pillars and wrought-iron flat-bar double gates opening to road to north and south.
- Rathbarran House, rectory/glebe/vicarage/curate's house, 1810–1815, Regional interest, registry number 32402502, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=SL&regno=32402502. Detached three-bay two-storey-over-basement rendered former rectory, built c.1811, now in use as private house. Single-storey canted bay to centre rear (east) elevation. Hipped artificial slate roofs, clay ridge and hip tiles, painted smooth-rendered chimneystacks, half-round cast-iron gutters on paired plain painted timber corbels. Painted smooth-rendered ruled-and-lined walling, projecting plinth course. Square-headed window openings, stone sills, painted six-over-six timber sash windows. Round-headed door opening, deep concave reveals, oblong four-pane overlight, painted half-glazed timber door with two raised-and-fielded panels and margined glazing, approached by three stone steps. Square-headed door opening to canted bay, painted half-glazed timber door with two raised-and-fielded panels and margined glazing, gabled canopy over. Gardens to front, walled garden to rear.
