On a natural terrace on an E-facing slope in undulating terrain. Three high crosses (TS079-007002-; TS079-007003-; TS079-007004-) within a graveyard (TS079-007005-) are located c. 30m to the S and SE. Nothing is known of the earliest history and dedication of the religious foundation of Ahenny, known formerly as Kilclispen (Fanning, 1976, 36) or St. Crispin's church (Killanin & Duignan, 1967, 143). In the Early Medieval Period this area was part of the Kingdom of Ossory, a powerful buffer state between the Laigin to the north and the Eoghanacht to the west (Edwards, 1983, 5). There is a discussion on the name Kilclispeen in Ó Cearbhaill (2007, 86-9). Carrigadoon hill dominates the view to the SW. The church, aligned E-W (ext. dims. 15.54m x c. 8.77m), is of roughly coursed sandstone rubble with small slate pinning stones. There are large sandstone block and start quoins at the NW angle. The NW and NE angles rest on a stone plinth. Only the N wall survives intact, though the middle section has collapsed. It reaches a max. height of 2.7m at the W end and 3.2m at the E end, above a basal plinth. A simple ogee-headed sandstone window at E end of N wall (H 0.95m; Wth 0.15m) is chamfered externally and has no bar holes. The internal window embrasure (Wth 0.7m) is flat-headed and splayed. A spud-stone is carved into the sill on the W side, but with no carved eye, the shutter bar went up into space behind the lintel. A portion of the E wall (L 5.3m; T 0.85m) survives. The W wall survives in a very ruinous state (L c. 8.77m; T 1.02m; max. H 0.31m), as does a short length of the S return at the SW angle (L 3.5m; T 0.85m; max. H 0.17m). There is a lot of sandstone rubble piled up in the interior NE angle. Internally at the W end of the N wall is a worn, red sandstone corbel 1.93m above internal ground level and 0.95m from the W wall. There are slate slabs dumped in the interior, from the nearby slate quarry according to a local informant. On an E-facing slope in undulating hilly terrain. A high cross, of sandstone, is centrally placed within a square graveyard (TS079-007005-) defined by a stone wall. A later medieval church (TS079-007001-) is located c. 30m to the N. Another high cross (TS079-007003-) is located to the S and a cross base (TS079-007004-) to the SE. The N cross (H 3.65m; Wth 1.39m) is of the ringed high cross type with a conical capstone. The cross itself is decorated with ornamental designs which are paralleled in 8th-century metalwork (Richardson and Scarry 1990, 29). The stepped base (1.23m x 1.05m; H 0.66m) is decorated with figured scenes on all four sides. The N side depicts a procession with chariot; the E side Adam naming the animals; the S side a funeral procession, an ecclesiastic with a ringed processional cross walks in front of a horse bearing a headless body, ravens attack the corpse and at the rear a man carries the head; the W side depicts seven cloaked figures carrying staffs or croziers and has been interpreted as seven bishops or the mission of the apostles (ibid.; Hickey 1955, 118-21). The high cross is part of a group of crosses identified with the former medieval kingdom of Ossory (Crawford 1909, 256-60; Edwards 1983, 5-46). The cross itself is decorated with ornamental designs which are paralleled in 8th-century metalwork (Richardson and Scarry 1990, 29). The base (1.21m x 1.17m; H 0.5m) is decorated with denuded figured scenes on all four sides, each panel is divided in two by a cross in relief. The N and S side depict a hunting scene; the E side includes Daniel in the lions' den on the left; the S side includes the fall of man on the left; the W side is too worn to decipher (ibid.; Edwards 1983, 28). The high cross is part of a group of crosses identified with the former medieval kingdom of Ossory (Crawford 1909, 256-60; Edwards 1983, 5-46). Enclosing the summit of Carrigadoon Hill. A roughly oval-shaped area (diam. c. 180m N-S; c. 320m E-W) defined by a bank which varies in size and construction in different quadrants. In the NW quadrant the bank is composed of shale rubble, laid horizontally and surmounted by an earth and grass mantle (Wth 4m; int. H 0.9m; ext. H 3m). In the SW sector the bank is reduced in height (Wth 1.3m; int. H 0.45m; ext. H 1.07m) with the external ground level forming a platform (Wth c. 4m) before the ground falls sharply. The S quadrant is similar in that the external ground level forms a slight platform, with a slight suggestion of an outer bank (Wth 0.8m; int. H 0.15m; ext. H 1.72m drop to forest road), before falling sharply. Much of the bank in the S sector has been truncated by a forest road. Quarrying has taken place at the SE end of the hill resulting in a large mound of upcast, the circuit of the hillfort is not traceable at this E end. The enclosing element in the NE quadrant is visible as an internal fosse (Wth 1.2m; D 0.9m) with outer bank (Wth 3.2m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 0.85m). Two further quarries along the NE quadrant. N sector of hillfort is defined by an inner bank (Wth c. 5m; ext. H 2.66m); V-shaped fosse (Wth 0.5m; D 0.72m) and outer bank (Wth 1.4m; ext. H 0.86m) with a slight ledge (c. 1m) before dropping sharply.
