On a gentle N-facing slope in a small wooded area surrounded by marsh and rough meadow, in the Glen of Aherlow at the foot of the Galty mountains. St. Berrihert's Well is located c. 170m to SE. It is named after St. Berichter, a Saxon saint, founder of Tullylease, Co.Cork who came to Ireland in the late 7th century (Ó hÉailidhe 1967, 104). The saint's pattern day is on the 18th of February and prayers were said at the Kyle and the well (Ó hÉailidhe 1967, 105). Oval area (diam. 35.4m NE-SW; 26m NW-SE) defined by an earth and stone bank (Wth 2.45-3.3m; int. H 0.31-0.66m; ext. H 1.08m) which is referred to locally as the Kyle (Ó hÉailidhe 1967, 103). In S sector of enclosure there is a modern oval construction (int. dims. 5.5m x 9.5m) of mortared stone (wall T 1.1m), quite a crude structure built by the OPW in 1946 (ibid., 102) to display the cross-slabs and protect them from cattle damage. This modern enclosure is accessed by a style with steps in the W quadrant, the outer steps have partially collapsed and include a re-used stone with a deliberate groove. At the same time the larger enclosure was defined by kerb stones and a number of small heaps of stone, each surmounted by a cross-inscribed slab, was erected at intervals on the bank (ibid. 103). These constructions, however, never formed part of the annual devotions (ibid., 103). In the centre of the interior there are a number of small upright stones which mark the burial places of unbaptised infants (ibid., 103). According to Ó hÉailidhe (103) there were seventy-two slabs (TS074-010008- to TS074-010078-) identified. There is also the head of a high-cross (TS074-010003-), the base of a cross with a bullaun-like depression (TS074-010004-), another cross-base (TS074-010080-) and fragment of a quernstone. Of the church (TS074-010001-) which once occupied the enclosure there are no visible remains and during the work carried out by the OPW in the 1940s 'no remains of old walls or foundations were found anywhere within the Kyle, the material for the stone wall having to be imported' (ibid., 103). Ó hÉailidhe (1967, 102-126) identified seventy-two cross-inscribed slabs at St. Berrihert's Kyle. Nineteen had previously been identified and recorded by Crawford (1909, 60-62; 1912, 241-2). The majority of these have been inserted into the stone enclosure built by the OPW in 1946 (ibid. 102), while of the remainder, one per stone heap was inserted on top of several small heaps of stones or 'stations' constructed around the bank of the larger enclosure (ibid. 103). At the time of inspection seventy of the slabs could be identified, including nine (TS074-010018-; TS074-010034-; TS074-010035-; TS074-010051-; TS074-010053-; TS074-010057-; TS074-010068-; TS074-010072- and TS074-010076-) associated with the small heaps. Two slabs which could not be identified are numbered and illustrated in Ó hÉailidhe's catalogue as 4 (TS074-010010-) and 48 (TS074-010054-) (ibid. 109-110, 116- 117). All the slabs are sandstone, most have two fairly level faces and irregular edges with the decoration executed by pocking, though false-relief is also employed (ibid. 122-3). Ó hÉailidhe (ibid. 123) noted that twenty-eight of the slabs have crosses on both faces. Only one slab (TS074-010007-) bears an inscription (ibid. 120-122). The slabs range in date from the 7th to the 9th century (ibid. 125-6). This high cross is located in the E sector, on the base of the wall. The larger of two cross-heads (dims. Wth 1m; H 0.86m; T 0.16m), of red sandstone, is part of a High Cross. The upper arm on one side is decorated with a scene showing a man holding up his arms which are being grabbed by a figure on either side, one holding an knife (Ó hÉailidhe 1967, 107-8), possibly depicting the Arrest of Christ (Harbison 1970, 219). The left arm depicts two figures wrestling, while on the right arm there are two figures, one appears to be hitting the other with a knife/sword (Ó hÉailidhe 1967, 107-8). The centre of the cross-head is decorated with a marigold motif encircled by interlace and a key-pattern (ibid.). The other side of the cross-head is quite worn and decorated with central concentric circles and faint suggestion of interlace on the arms (ibid.). At the centre of the cross there is a double concentric ring (diam. 0.35m) within which is an equal-armed incised, outlined cross, in the centre of which is a small sunken rectangle. There is no decoration on the back of the cross. At 'St Berrihert's Kyle' where there is an island in the marsh which formed the ecclesiastical enclosure (TS074-010----) for the 7th-century saint. On this island there a stone-walled enclosure built by the OPW in 1946 for the purpose of securing and displaying cross-slabs which were found at the location (Ó hÉailidhe 1967, 102). On the SE side, at the base of the wall there is a cross-base consisting of a roughly rectangular block (dims. 1m x 1.25m; H 0.4m) with rectangular socket (dims. 0.23m x 0.38m; D 0.18m). On the surface of the cross-base there is a shallow, oval depression (dims. 0.28m x 0.36m; D 0.08m), interpreted as a bullaun (ibid., 108). On a gentle N-facing slope in a small wooded area surrounded by marsh and rough meadow, in the Glen of Aherlow at the foot of the Galty mountains. St. Berrihert's Well (TS074-011----) is located c. Of the church (TS074-010001-) which once occupied the enclosure there are no visible remains and during the work carried out by the OPW in the 1940s 'no remains of old walls or foundations were found anywhere within the Kyle, the material for the stone wall having to be imported' (ibid., 103). In S sector of enclosure there is a modern oval construction (int. dims. 5.5m x 9.5m) of mortared stone (wall T 1.1m), quite a crude structure built by the OPW in 1946 (ibid., 102) to display the cross-slabs and protect them from cattle damage. This modern enclosure is access vis a stile with steps in the W quadrant, the outer steps have partially collapsed and include a re-used stone with a deliberate groove. In the centre of the interior there are a number of small upright stones which mark the burial places of unbaptised infants (ibid., 103). In wet, marshy terrain. A recent wooden plank walk-way has been constructed across the marsh to give access to the well, which otherwise is very difficult. The holy well consists of a large, roughly circular area (diam. c. 30m) defined from NW-N-E-S by a bank (Wth crest 2.9-3.3m; Wth base 6-7.2m; int. H 1.45-1.75m; ext. H 0.73-0.8m at SE and NW respectively). The edge of the pool is not clearly defined in the S-W-NW sector, here the ground falls gradually towards the pool. The S bank runs into a field boundary which runs roughly E-W along the S side of the monument and joins with another field boundary which runs roughly N-S along the W side of the monument. The surrounding area and most of the S half of the enclosed pool, which is marshy, is covered in trees. Only the N half of the well is a pool, though the NW quadrant is heavily overgrown with water plants. The pool has bubbling spring water which is very clear (D 0.8-1m at least) and there is a channelled run-off in the NNE with a small foot-bridge over it. There are several rag bushes on the N side of the well which vary in size, age and species, including willow, holly, birch and oak. Suspended from the branches are ribbons, which are predominately red and green, CDs, rosary beads, scapulas, handkerchiefs and gloves as well as mugs. At the base of the oak tree there are various representations of Our Blessed Lady and prayers to saints, including one to Blessed Faustina Kowalska, a Polish nun who died in 1938 and was beatified in 1993. Though this is a recognised holy well it may have pre-Christian origins as a ritual pond. On an E-facing slope in upland terrain in the Galtee Mountains, overlooking valleys to the SE and NNE. A small rectangular structure (int. dims. 3.25m NE-SW; 2.2m NW-SE; wall T 0.6-0.7m; max. H 0.55m) constructed of rough red sandstone conglomerate boulders, approximately 3 courses high in places. There is a narrow entrance (Wth 0.75m) at the NE end of the SE wall. It is probably a 19th-century grouse-shooting butt.
