Situated on the crest of a N-S ridge in undulating pasture. Depicted as a circular enclosure on the 1st ed. OS 6-inch map with field boundaries abutting the N, S and W sides; similarly depicted on the 1903 ed., though all adjacent field boundaries had been removed. Site now levelled; no visible trace above ground. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Situated on a slight rise in undulating pastureland, sloping gradually to the W. Depicted on the 1st ed. OS 6-inch map as a roughly oval enclosure abutting a field boundary at W and not indicated on the subsequent 1903 ed. The site is levelled but is visible as a slight rise in ground level (diam. c. 25m N-S) with a slight trace of a bank at N (Wth c. 2.6m; H 0.2m). The W side appears to have been truncated by a roughly N-S field boundary. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Situated on a gentle W-facing slope in undulating pasture. Depicted on the 1st ed. Situated on a N-facing slope in undulating pastureland. Depicted as a roughly circular enclosure on the 1st ed. OS 6-inch map, however, by the 1903 ed. only the S half of the site is indicated. Inspected in 1959 and classified as a ringfort (OPW Correspondence, 19-6-1959). The site is now levelled with no visible trace above ground. National Monument No. 604. Situated on level ground just W of the village of Ardcrony. A burial chamber is exposed in a partly demolished round cairn now some 20m in diameter. The chamber, uncovered during bulldozing operations in 1977, was subsequently excavated (Wallace 1977, 3-20). The cairn, originally about 33m in diameter, may have been enclosed by an earthen bank and ditch. The chamber, polygonal in plan and orientated N-S, is centrally placed in the cairn. It is 1.75m long, 1.4m wide and 0.7m high. An inward-leaning slab forms each of its sides, two upright stones form each end, and roofing is by means of a single large slab. The skeletons of two males and a decorated pottery vessel were found on the paved floor of the chamber. A bone from one of the skeletons yielded a radiocarbon determination corresponding to a calendar date of c.3500 BC (Brindley, Lanting and Mook 1983, 1-9). Situated on a SW-facing slope in undulating terrain under pasture and tillage. Depicted as a circular enclosure on the 1st and latest ed. OS 6-inch map with a field boundary skirting the NW and NE quadrants. The location and depiction on the OS 6-inch maps suggests a possible ringfort classification. The site is now levelled with little visible except a slight rise in the field. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). Situated on a low rise in undulating terrain. An early ecclesiastical foundation which was patronised by the O'Hogan family (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 373). The site is listed in the ecclesiastical taxation of the Diocese of Killaloe in 1302 (CDI, vol. 5, 302) and the Royal Visitation of 1615 described the building as ' chancell up, the body down' (Murphy 1914, 220). A multi-period church situated off-centre in a rectangular graveyard, with an adjoining tower house (TN015-015002) immediately to the W. A nave (dims. c. 9.6m N-S; 7.75m E-W; wall T 0.9m) and chancel (dims. 6.7m N-S; 8.57m E-W) church composed of roughly coursed limestone blocks, with large sandstone quoins, resting vertically, in the SE angle. The original church appears to have been a single undivided unit. The single-light window in the S wall of the nave is chamfered and rebated externally and has a wide internal splay. Diagonal tooling on the jambs indicates a twelfth-century date for this feature. There is a mason's mark on the bottom, external face of the W jamb consisting of a set-square with terminals. Though now missing, the OS Letters mention a round-headed lintel for this window, which has been replaced by an incongruous sillstone (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 3, 24). The church probably had a vaulted ceiling as attested by springers for an E-W vault visible on the N and S walls of the chancel. Many of the features visible today date to late sixteenth-century modifications. These include the central ogee-headed window with plain spandrels in the E gable decorated with vine-scroll motif and an owl's head on the external face and a substantial round, cut limestone chancel arch. There are no windows in the N and S walls of the chancel. The church has also been altered in recent years, the N wall of chancel being largely rebuilt and buttressed, with fragments of gravestones incorporated. The slightly pointed doorway in the S wall of the nave and adjoining the neighbouring tower house has been concreted over. The N wall of the nave is destroyed. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). Located in a graveyard on a low rise, adjoining Ardcrony church (TN015-015001-) to the E. Described in the Civil Survey (1654-6) as the 'ruines of an old castle the walls onely standing neer the vaulted chappell being all wast' (Simington 1934, vol. 2, 292). Daniell Hogan of Graige is listed as proprietor in 1640 (ibid.). A four-storey tower house of roughly coursed limestone rubble entered through the E wall with steps down to the interior and spiral stairs rising immediately S of the doorway in the SE angle. The E wall terminates at N with a straight edge, possibly the original end, although there is no evidence of a return and the N wall has been destroyed. The N end of the W wall has also collapsed. There is a pointed vault over the ground floor with good evidence of wicker centring. This floor has a dividing wall (T 0.5m) which may be a later insert. An oriel window projects form the S wall at first-floor level - of the light itself only a chamfered jamb remains. There is a large opening broken through the E face of this floor. On the third floor in the E face there is a cusped ogee-headed window with plain spandrels and chamfered exterior, and the remains of a round-headed single-light. The stairs are lit by single-light opes, one of which reuses a quernstone fragment as an embrasure lintel. An external wall (H 2.5m) projecting out of the SW angle appear to be the remains of a buttress as recorded in the Ordnance Survey Letters. There is a bartizan above this at third-floor level which is supported on four corbels, the S corbel on the W wall has a human head carved in relief on its underside. Situated on a gently sloping ridge in rolling farmland. The northern side of na E-facing chamber and its displaced roofstone survive. To the E there is a portal-stone, 2.25m high. To the W and leaning against the last there is a sidestone, 1.7m high. The roofstone, 2.2m x 1.8m and 0.45m thick, leans against the western end of the sidestones. A displaced slab, 1.9m in maximum dimension, rests against the outer faces of the two orthostats.
