Situated on a SW-facing slope, just off the crest of a ridge in undulating terrain, under tillage. Depicted on the 1843 ed. OS 6-inch map as roughly square area with trees and hachured on the 1954-5 revision. Although levelled the complete circuit (diam. 29.3m) is visible as a cropmark, with the remains of the bank visible in the S half. Described in 1964 as a 'small slightly raised sub-rectangular plot of ground, apparently an old covert or tree-ring..[with] slight bank' (OPW file 1964). The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). Situated on an E-facing slope, on outcrop, with a river at the base of the slope to the E. In 1640 Matthew Kennedy was listed as the owner of 108 plantation acres of land in Ballintotty consisting of 90 acres arable, 12 acres pasture and 6 acres of meadow (Simington 1934, 255). The Civil Survey of 1654-56 recorded that 'upon the sd lands standeth a ruined Castle ye walls onely standing with a streame or brooke, whereon is a Millseate (TN021-091----) one Oarchard & eight Cabbins' (ibid.). Present remains consist of a four-storey tower house with parapet, (ext. dims. 11.7m x 9.2m; wall T 2m) composed of roughly coursed limestone rubble. The entrance, at ground level, is through a pointed doorway in the N end of the E wall leading to a lobby with a murder-hole overhead and a guardroom to the S. A pointed doorway opposite the main entrance leads to the ground-floor chamber and mural stairs to the N continue up through the N and W walls. A ledge (H 0.8m) along the E and W walls at ground-floor level appears to be a springer for a vault never completed. There are embrasures with flat-headed single-light windows in the E and W walls and wall cupboards in the W and N walls. A garderobe chute is visible at the E end of the S wall - the inner face has collapsed and the large exit is now blocked. This chute was accessible from mural chambers at both first and second-floor level. The first floor has central embrasures in the S and W walls, with lights broken out, and a large fireplace recess in the E wall. The second floor is accessed through a pointed doorway from the mural stairs in the W wall. There is a fireplace in the E wall at this level; the jambs are intact but the mantle is missing. Window embrasures in the N and S walls provide access to mural passages. All upper levels were carried on wooden floors supported by corbels, except the third floor which rests on a barrel vault. The main chamber at third-floor level is entered from the stairs in the S wall. There is a window embrasure in the E wall with wall cupboards on either side. In the W wall there is a blocked single-light with an embrasure converted into a fireplace and a large niche inserted to the S. The N wall has a two-light ogee-headed window and a mural chamber accessed from a doorway in the internal N wall. Garderobe chambers occupy the SW and NW angles. The stairs in the SE angle lead to a blocked garderobe chamber and the NE angle stairs lead up to a parapet. There are mural passages in the N and S walls at wall-walk level with the shadow of a gable roof visible on their internal faces. There is a chimney stack on the wall-walk of the E wall and a pair of corbels at the E end of the S wall and at the S end of the E wall which probably formerly supported a bartizan. The shadows of two gables are visible against the external E face - these buildings are illustrated in the OS Letters (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 1, 201). Situated on the E-facing slope of a U-shaped river promontory. Excavations were undertaken here in advance of a major road construction scheme. The site took the form of a U-shaped river promontory (TN021-094002), defended by a fosse and earthen bank on the landward side. It measured 65m x 50m and was split into two parts by the erection of a second bank within the site itself. The fosse measured 5-6m in width and up to 1.5m in depth. The bank had maximum dimensions of 8m in width and 2m in height. A causewayed entrance (Wth 3m) was located at SW and was defended by a possibly stone-fronted gate-tower. A metalled and roughly paved roadway led through the outer enclosure to a gateway in the second bank leading to the inner part of the enclosure. The outer enclosure (TN021-094002) contains the remains of a house (ext. dims. 13.5m x 10m; int. dims. 10m x 6.5m) of which only the ground floor survived to a maximum height of 1.8m above foundation level. There was a cross-wall creating two rooms at ground-floor level. The partial remains of a spiral staircase were found within a projection in the north wall. Adjacent to this, and adjoining the western wall, was the base of a small latrine tower. The entrance to the house was on the ground floor but was only accessible along a narrow path between the house and the inner bank. The inner part of the enclosure revealed possible evidence of two smaller buildings constructed on timber sill beams. The enclosure and all buildings were contemporary and were dated on the grounds of direct association with glazed 13th-14th century pottery and Henry III coins. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). Situated on flat poorly drained land with the Ballinotty River to S and a medieval house (TNO21-094001/002) 200m to the E. The site consisted of a roughly circular or oval burnt stone mound (c.18m x 13m; H 0.3-0.5m) with adjacent spreads of burnt stone visible. Approximately 5m E of the mound there was a marl embankment (dims. 31m E-W x 17m N-S) with evidence of a peat and burnt stone layer in its composition. A larger spread of burnt stones (dims. c.40-50m E-W x 14m N-S) was visible to the S of the embankment. A second burnt stone spread (dims. 12m x 8m; H 0.2m) located 10m to the N was excavated but produced no finds. (O'Brien 2000, 188). Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien. The site was uncovered during monitoring/testing in advance of Nenagh Bypass. A low, burnt stone mound (dims. c.16m x 9m; D c.0.3-0.4m) with an unlined rectangular trough (dims. 2.4m x 1.2m; D 0.32m) filled with burnt stones (O'Brien 2000, 196). 'A post-hole was found at each internal corner of the trough edges. A possible pot boiler feature was “attached” to the north-west edge of the trough, and beside this was a shallow linear cut - the remains of a windbreak. A number of additional pits and/or smaller troughs were cut into natural at the north-east and east edges of the mound' (ibid.). Approximately 10m ESE of the burnt mound there was a roughly oval spread of burnt stones (dims. c.11m x 9m; D c.0.2m), beneath which were a number of pits/small troughs with further evidence of clusters of stake-holes (ibid.). 'The northern area between both sites had a metalled stone surface surrounding some of the pits, perhaps indicative of connecting pathways. Finds from both sites consisted of small quantities of animal bone and teeth, some chert flakes, unworked wood and charcoal' (ibid.). Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien.
