(1904) only the SE quadrant is indicated. There is no visible trace of this site above ground and the field boundary at E has been removed. Situated on a gentle NE-facing slope in undulating pasture. Two enlosures TN027-010 and TN027-011, both levelled, lie 100m to the NNW and WNW respectively. The site is depicted on both the 1st and latest ed. OS 6-inch maps and appears as a cropmark on an aerial photograph taken in 1968 (CUCAP, AVN 58). Although levelled, an oval rise (diam. 26m N-S; 21.5m E-W) indicates where the site stood. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). Situated on a gradual N-facing slope in gently undulating pasture. This site was levelled between 1963, when it was last inspected, and 1968 when it appears as a cropmark on an aerial photograph (CUCAP, AVN 58). The outline of the fosse is visible as a ring of differential grass growth (Wth 3m) giving a diam. of 34.4m for the site. In 1963 the site had already been severely damaged by quarrying in the interior. The surrounding bank (Wth 1.5m; ext. H 1.2-1.8m) and shallow outer fosse, however, were still relatively intact (OPW Correspondence, 1963). The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Located on level ground in gently undulating terrain. The OS Name Books (c. 1840) recorded the following: 'Site of Ballycrenode House: Those people are very old who ever recollect of seeing any part of this house standing and the spot where it stood can only be discovered by the pavement of the yard. It belonged to the O'Carroll family and its last inhabitant is said to have been Major O'Carroll. The place is now the property of Lord Norbury'. This was possible an early house as it was already long gone by 1840. The present Ballycrenode House is located NW of this earlier house and is a three-bay box Georgian house.
