- TN017-022: Ringfort - rath, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CTN017-022----. Situated on the SE slope of a hill in undulating pastureland. All that survives of the site is a kink in the field boundary which delimits the S sector of the site and may incorporate the original enclosing element. This boundary consists of a clay bank and stone wall (Wth 1.4m; int. H 0.9m; ext. H 1.55m). The site appears to have been circular (diam. c. 30m). The interior is a natural, fairly flat-topped hillock which slopes gently down to the enclosing bank. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Situated on a natural hillock in undulating terrain. The hillock has been scarped creating a domed interior enclosed by a bank of earth and stone (Wth 1.8m; int. H 0.68m; ext. H 1.7m), a steep-sided U-shaped fosse (Wth 2.7m; D 0.88m) and an external bank of clay and stone (Wth 1.5m; ext. H 0.45m). There is evidence of stone revetment on the inner face of the inner and outer banks. The fosse at W may be partially rock cut rather than revetted. The inner bank at E/NE is particularly well preserved although it appears from the OS 6-inch map to have been reused as a field boundary and was probably built up at that stage. There is a causewayed entrance (Wth c. 5m) in the SE sector. An old post and wire fence extends NW-SE through the SW quadrant. Located on a NE-facing slope which falls sharply immediately N of the site. A stream flows at the base of the steep slope. The current OS 6-inch map indicates that the SE portion of the site had been destroyed and the rest of the site was subsequently levelled in the 1950s (Stout 1984, 86). The outline of this large irregular enclosure is still barely visible (c. 95m N-S) defined by a much flattened bank in the S half (Wth c. 4m; int. H 0.42m; ext. H 0.36m) with traces of an external fosse (Wth 2.4m; D 0.25m) and as a raised platform in the NE quadrant (H 1.17m). There appears to be a smaller circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m N-S) in the N sector of the interior defined by a scarp (H 0.44m) and possible outer fosse (Wth 2.5m; D 0.4m). Located in a hollow between ridges in undulating pastureland. A well presumably contained in a tank which is covered by a barrel-vaulted concrete roof adjacent to which is a small concrete pump-house. A small stream flows SE from the well. Located on a natural hillock in undulating terrain, in pastureland. Higher ground is formed by a ridge to the NW. A bivallate site with very impressive defences and a well-defined causewayed entrance (Wth 2-2.3m) at E with banks declining in height towards the entrance. The site is circular (27m N-S; 28.5m E-W) and is enclosed by an earthen bank (Wth 2.5m; int. H 0.88m; ext. H 3m), a flat-bottomed fosse (Wth 4.5m; D 2.26m), partially rock cut, with an impressive outer bank (Wth 2.5m; ext. H 0.78m). The vertical profile of the banks is very impressive and indicates that this site was an important defensive earthwork of possible early medieval date. Its morphology is unlike that of the ringforts of this region although its location is typical of a ringfort rather than a motte or ringwork. The overall emphasis of the site is on its impressive defensive features which suggest that this was not a simple defended farmstead of a single family unit.
