- TS055-068: Moated site, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CTS055-068----. In tillage field atop high ground with good views in all directions in upland region, nearby church (TS055-067001-) and graveyard (TS055-067002-) 100m to the N. Slightly raised square-shaped area (approx dims. 32m N-S; 30m E-W) enclosed by a well-preserved earth and stone bank (top Wth 2m; base Wth 4m; int. H 1m; ext. H 1.5m), no outer fosse or entrance feature visible. Road intersects external face of bank at N on an E-W axis. Interior covered in bushes and thorn bushes making detailed examination impossible. Field ploughed right up to base of enclosing bank, no visible remains of an outer fosse. Not a classic moated site and it is unusual to get a classic moated site beside a medieval church, would appear to be the defended residence of the medieval lord with his associated church unlike the low-lying defended farmsteads of the lords tenants. In the OS letters the monument is described as a 'square earthen fort whose sides are 26 paces in length. Its parapet is 8 feet [2.4m] high over the level of the field and 4 feet [1.2m] over the area of the fort itself' (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 1, 152). In improved pasture, on an E-facing slope. The remains of an oval area (dims. c. 35m N-S; c. 30m E-W) defined by a possible bank incorporated into a curvilinear field boundary ESE-S-NNW and obscured by impenetrable growth. There are very low traces of levelled scarp (Wth 5m; H 0.15m) from NNW-N-ESE. The interior slopes down gently to E and is incorporated into the field as pasture. In level pasture, abutting regional road (R690) to SW. A roughly sub-circular area (dims. 62m NE-SW; 58m NW-SE) defined by a low earthen bank (Wth at top 1m; overall Wth 3.5m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.55m) and fosse (basal Wth 1.5m; overall Wth 4m; D 0.65m) from W-N-ENE. The bank is incorporated into a field boundary W-N-NE and reduced to scarp (Wth 4m; H 0.4m) NE-E-SSW. The monument has been levelled and the outer edge of the SW sector has been incorporated into a small farmyard. There is a gap (Wth 4m) at NW and another (Wth 3m) at NE. Detached three-bay single-storey lobby-entry plan vernacular house, built c.1800, having one-bay addition to west and lean-to one-bay extension to east. Pitched scolloped reed thatched roof, with tiled roof to addition and corrugated-iron to lean-to extension. Roughcast rendered rubble stone walls. Square-headed openings with timber sliding sash windows, one-over-one pane to front and one-over-one pane and two-over-two pane to rear. Timber battened half-door set into windbreak. Limestone flagstones to old kitchen and lobby area. Two-bay single-storey outbuilding to east with loft, rendered walls and pitched corrugated-iron roof.
