Situated on a gentle SW-facing slope in undulating pastureland. An enclosure (diam. 30m) defined by a substantial earthen bank (Wth 2.3m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 2.42m), a berm (Wth c. 7m) and an external bank (Wth 2.5m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.95m). The site is quite overgrown, particularly around the edge of the outer bank and the E half of the inner bank. There is a possible fosse (Wth 2.5m) visible only at S and W where the field boundary runs concentrically with the site. This may be a field ditch. The inner enclosure is clearly visible on an aerial photograph taken in June 1973 (GSIAP, S 466/7). The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). Situated on a gradual SE-facing slope in undulating pastureland, just off the crest of a hill. Indicated as a circular enclosure on the latest ed. (1952-3) OS 6-inch map and depicted in an area of outcrop on the 1st ed. (1843). The site was levelled c. 20 years ago according to the landowner who remembers the site as consisting of a circular area (diam. c. 30m) enclosed by a bank (H c. 1.5m) and outer fosse. Aerial photograph (GB89.AB.19) shows cropmark of a circular enclosure defined by a fosse. TN041-059 (Concentric Enclosure) is visible in the background. The above aerial report has been compiled by Dr. G.F. Barrett and supplied to the Archaeological Survey of Ireland. Date of this report: 09/11/09. Situated on quite a steep SE-facing slope in undulating terrain under tillage. Indicated as a circular enclosure on the 1st ed. (1843) OS 6-inch map but not marked on the subsequent 1952-3 revision. There is no clear trace of the site on the ground as it has been levelled but a slight rise appears to indicate the bank in the NW and SW quadrants providing a diameter of 44m. Aerial photograph (GB89.AB.20) shows cropmark of a circular enclosure defined by a fosse. The above aerial report has been compiled by Dr. G.F. Barrett and supplied to the Archaeological Survey of Ireland. Situated on a low sloping E-W gravel ridge, the site utilises the downslope to the N and S, and the end of the ridge to the E. The large size of the monument along with the presence of an inner fosse suggests that this may be the remains of a prehistoric ritual enclosure rather than the remains of a large ringfort (pers. comm. Denis Power 04/12/2017). Described in 1951 by R. D. Fluskey in an Ordnance Survey Field Memorandum as 'an ancient earthwork locally known as a Fort' (SMR File). See attached file for sketch plan and section of the monument drawn by R. D Fluskey on the 22/12/1951. Levelled site is barely visible as a raised area with a central depression, diameter c. 50m N-S. The enclosure (approx. overall diam. 85m N-S x 90m E-W) is depicted on both the 1st (1843) and current (1952-3) eds. of the OS 6-inch maps as a circular-shaped area defined by a wide inner fosse and external bank with a post-1700 quarry hole in the W quadrant. Post-1700 limekiln c. 20m to ENE with levelled field boundary intersecting enclosing bank at NE, SSE and NNW. Interior of monument appears to have been subjected to small scale agricultural quarrying from the post-1700 period onwards. The cropmark of a wide inner fosse and levelled external bank are clearly visible on aerial photographs taken between July 1968 and July 1971 (CUCAP AVT056; AYP080; BDL051; BGN100/101). These cropmarks were not visible at the time of inspection. The aerial photographs taken on 20th July 1968 (CUCAP AVT056) and 11th July 1969 (CUCAP AYP080) shows the monument as a slightly raised circular area defined by a wide internal fosse and broad external bank. Aerial photographs taken 19th of July 1971 shows a large white area inside the monument which may be the result of small scale gravel extraction. In 2000 archaeological testing by Richard O'Brien of a development c. 30m to the southwest of the levelled ringfort, revealed a large sub-soil cut ditch (Wth 3.7m) feature and a possible associated hearth feature (TN041-062001-). The ditch was not investigated further and no finds were recovered. This testing was carried out under Licence No. 00E0892 (Bennett 2002, 325). Aerial photograph (GB89.AB.18) shows cropmark of large circular enclosure defined by two concentric fosses; some traces of internal detail including a linear fosse which may indicate the position of a possible souterrain (TN041-062002-). In 2000 archaeological testing by Richard O'Brien of a development c. 30m to the southwest of a levelled ringfort (TN041-062), revealed a large sub-soil cut ditch (Wth 3.7m) feature and a possible associated hearth feature (TN041-062001). The ditch was not investigated further and no finds were recovered. This testing was carried out under Licence No. 00E0892 (Bennett 2002, 325). - TN041-062002: Souterrain, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CTN041-062002-. Situated on the summit of a low, roughly E-W ridge, the site utilising the downslope to the N and S, and the end of the ridge to the E. Aerial photograph (GB89.AB.18) shows cropmark of large circular enclosure (TN041-062) defined by two concentric fosses; some traces of internal detail including a linear fosse which may indicate the position of a souterrain. The above aerial report has been compiled by Dr. G.F. Barrett and supplied to the Archaeological Survey of Ireland. Just off crest on S facing slope in undulating terrain, in garden under pasture. Site not marked on either 1st (1843) or 2nd (1952-53) ed. OS 6-inch map but appears on an aerial photograph (Ordnance Survey 1840) as a semi-circular cropmark, the E side of a possible roughly circular enclosure. No visible trace of site above ground. Landowner never noticed any semi-circular feature in the field. Cropmark of a levelled enclosure possible that is visible on the OSI aerial photographs taken in the year 2000. This possible enclosure site is located approx. 180m to the NE of a levelled bivallate ringfort (TN041-062) that is also clearly visible as a bivalate cropmark on the OSI aerial photographs taken in the year 2000. This possible enclosure is barely visible as a partial curved depression in the field. This curving depression may be the remains of a levelled bank or fosse of the enclosure visible from the south to the southwest side of the possible enclosure. - TN047-002: Moated site, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CTN047-002----. Situated on the gentle S-facing slope of a natural rise in pasture. The site is depicted as a rectangular enclosure on the 1952-3 OS 6-inch map. Only the N side survives incorporated into a low field bank and hedgerow. The outline of the fosse surrounding this rectangular site (dims. 41m N-S; c.34m E-W) is visible as differential grass growth (Wth 3.4m). Situated on a slight rise in undulating terrain. Beakstown castle is mentioned in Civil Survey as 'the Castle out of repaire in Beakestown' (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 66). Beakstown is also mentioned in the Tipperary Depositions that document a year-long siege there by Confederate forces in the 1640s (Cairns 1987, 24). 'Beakstown House' is a ruined shell dating to the nineteenth century. It is a two-storey, four-bay house with the S bay projecting out. The roof is largely intact. The house is said by locals to have been a workhouse and there is no tradition of a castle. A raised area NE of the house, depicted on the 1952-3 OS 6-inch map may have been some form of garden feature (TN047-008002-) or may be the location of the castle. A chamfered jamb incorporated in doorway of the 'Old Corn Mill' on the 1st ed. OS 6-inch map may have come from Beakstown Castle. Situated on the W bank of the River Suir. A mill building recently demolished, however, the millrace is still intact and is constructed from cut blocks of limestone indicating an eighteenth/nineteenth-century date for the structure. Situated on the W bank of the River Suir at Beakstown. An old mill building which appears to incorporate an earlier mill, possibly that mentioned in the seventeenth-century Civil Survey (1654-6) as one of 'two Mills on the River Shewer in repaire' (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 66). The mill is marked as 'Old Corn Mill' on the 1st ed. (1843) OS 6-inch map but is not indicated on the subsequent 1952-3 revision. A rectangular building (c. 12m x 4.6m), aligned NE-SW, lies in ruins with the NE, SE and N end of the NW wall and part of the S end of the SW wall intact. The wall thickness varies from 0.6m to 1m and is constructed of uncoursed limestone rubble. A doorway at the N end of the NW wall incorporates a chamfered jamb from an earlier building, possibly Beakstown Castle (TN047-008001) which was located c. 200m SW. The millrace runs along the NW face and there is an internal rectangular depression in the ground near the W end of the NW wall to accommodate the inner wheel of the water wheel which is still intact. The NE wall (T 1.25m) appears to earlier - it extends at least 1.5m beyond the present rectangular building, the SE end being broken off. In this wall there is a flat-headed, limestone single-light window (0.15m x H 0.51m), chamfered externally, with drafted margins and hammer tooling. Situated immediately E of Beakstown House on land sloping down to the SE towards the River Suir, in gently undulating pastureland. A roughly circular area (diam. c. 40m NE-SW) which has probably been landscaped as part of a garden feature. It is defined by a scarp (H 1.1m) in the SW quadrant only. The NW sector is quite obscured by vegetation and has been disturbed by a roadway which skirts the edge of the site.
