Situated on a SW-facing slope of rising ground on poorly drained land in an upland area with an earthwork site (TN022-053) to the N. A heavily overgrown circular area (diam. 25m E-W) enclosed by two earth and stone banks with a wide, waterlogged intervening fosse (Wth 4-8m; D 0.7m) which appears to have been widened to accommodate drainage channels. A gap (Wth 9m) in the outer and inner bank at SW may be the original entrance feature. The outer bank (Wth 2.2-9m; ext. H 0.6m) is best preserved and appears to have been widened and altered by a drainage scheme on the surrounding land. A circular area (diam. 20m N-S; 25m E-W) enclosed by two earth and stone banks with intervening fosse (Wth 5m; D 0.5m) with modern gap (Wth 3m) at W. The site is intersected by a stream at S destroying all enclosing features. The inner bank (Wth 2.5m; int. H 1m; ext. H 1.5m) is best preserved while the outer bank (Wth 3m; ext. Situated on a hillock in between two steep-sided ravines in an upland area with a nearby ringfort (TN028-021) to the S. A raised oval-shaped area (diam. 25m E-W; 18m N-S; H 3m) enclosed by a roughly coursed mortared wall (T 1.5m; H 1m) from E through S to W with a scarp elsewhere, a wide waterlogged outer fosse (Wth 3-4m) and an external bank (Wth 2m; H 1.5m) visible on E and W sides only. The ravines form natural defences at N and S. Drystone wall-facing is visible on the inner face of the outer bank at W only. This is a highly defensive site which may be an early medieval earthwork with a superimposed seventeenth-century artillery fortification. Designated as 'Battery' on all editions of the OS 6-inch map. Situated on a W-facing slope of rising ground in a mountainous region with a nearby ringfort (TN028-021) to the E and a possible ringwork (TN022-058) to the NE. Stout assigns an early medieval date for the church based on the Calendar of Ormond deeds which refers to the 'rectory of the church of Burgagenefarne' in 1364 (Stout 1984, 100; COD, vol. 2, 84). The Royal Visitation of 1615 described the place as being without a church or chancel (Murphy 1914, 220). Listed in the ecclesiastical taxation of the Diocese of Killaloe in 1302 (CDI, vol. 5, 302). The present remains consist of a nineteenth-century graveyard (TN028-020002) enclosed by modern wall with no visible remains of the church site. According to the OS Letters the graveyard was known locally as St John's church (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 2, 84). The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Situated on the W-facing slope of a natural hillock on rising ground in an upland area with a nearby ringfort (TN028-021) to the NE. A raised oval area (diam. 34m N-S; 27m E-W) enclosed by an earth and stone bank (Wth 2m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 3m max. at N) and outer fosse (Wth 2m; D 0.5m) with an entrance gap (Wth 4m) at E. The fosse is visible at W only. The natural slope of the hillock falls away steeply at W offering a natural defensive element.
