Possible entrance (Wth 3m) at N and W (Wth 4m). Trace of fosse (basal Wth 0.75m; overall Wth 3.05m; D 0.3m) SW-W. Interior tends downslope to E with prevalent slope. Occasional rabbit burrows visible in bank. A 10m forestry buffer zone around monument is used as a driving line. A possible souterrain (TS071-023002-) is associated. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011 - TS071-023002: Souterrain, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CTS071-023002-. Keatinge (1858-9, 12) refers to the souterrain as being on the E side of the ringfort and describes it as 'a passage or way within the rath, and on the inner side of this passage I found more than one half of a little building, of the rudest stones, but still showing great tact and ingenuity in the erection of a bell or beehive-shaped entrance to the rath. At the bottom, a passage, choked somewhat with debris, leads into the fort, and some of the people in the immediate neighbourhood have gone in a short way', he goes on to describe how a local man 'entered with lights, and on going in a few yards through the sewer-like passage, he found it so enlarge so as to be able to stand erect. This man said that he found rooms of some extent and several small ones on the sides of the passage'. Associated with ringfort (TS071-023001-). No visible surface trace. Not depicted or named on 1st (1840) ed. or 2nd (1904) ed. OS 6-inch maps. In mature forestry, currently being felled, on a gentle E-facing slope. Access not gained. Depicted on 1st (1840) and 2nd (1904) ed. OS 6-inch maps as circular enclosure (diam. c. 32m). Field boundary depicted at tangent to E on 1843 map and truncating E-sector on current map. No buffer zone in forestry noted from vantage point of Sheegouna. It is possible that this monument has been levelled and is the one described by Keatinge (1858-9, 11) as 'the site of another fort (but which is now levelled)'. In rough pasture, on gradual E-facing slope, to N-side of stream valley. Slight visible surface trace of roughly semi-circular area (dims. 20m N-S; 25m E-W) defined by traces of levelled bank. Depicted on the 1904 ed. OS 6-inch map as truncated by field boundary to N. Possible entrance (Wth 3-4m) at SSE. Very uneven surface of field due to dry, sinuous gullies to NW, W and S. In lush pasture, on a generally level area. Sub-circular area (dims. 22m N-S; 26m E-W) defined by remains of low earthen bank (int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.45m; Wth 5m) NE-S-WNW and fosse (basal Wth 1.5m; overall Wth 7.75m; D 0.25m) NE-SE and is levelled out SE-WNW. Sub-circular area and fosse are truncated by earth and stone bank WNW-NE. Earth and stone bank (int. H 0.6-1.1m; ext. H 1.45-1.5m; Wth 6.5-7.7m) is SW-N-SE and truncated by road SE-S-SW. External fosse (basal Wth 1.7m; overall Wth 6.2m; D 0.2m) SW-N-NE is in-filled NE-SE probably due to a trackway shown on latest edition OS 6-inch map. Interior generally level; depression (L 4.5m; Wth 3.3m; D 0.5m) within NW quadrant. Possibly two phases of enclosure (overall dims. 30m N-S; 34m E-W). Depicted on 1840 OS 6-inch map as adjoining enclosure (TS071-028001-) to S, now separated by road (long-axis E-W) as per 1904 edition map. In upland heath, on a SE-facing slope of Sheegouna, on the eastern side of Slievenamon Mountain. Monument identified during field survey. A rectangular structure (overall dims. 2.8m N-S; 2.5m E-W; internal dims. 2.25m E-W; 1.1m N-S tapering to 0.6m towards the rear) which opens out to the E. The side walls are constructed of a combination of orthostats (H 0.77-1.1m) and rubble stone wall (T 0.8m) and are leaning into the interior. There is one lintel (dims. L 0.92m; T c. 0.4m) towards the rear supported on two orthostats and another collapsed stone (L 0.75m; T 0.36m) at the rear which appears to have been another lintel. The entrance is defined on either side by orthostats. A wall (int. H 0.9m; ext. H 0.6m) runs from the entrance northwards, revetting the hillslope. Cairn (TS071-021----) on Sheegouna is c. 112m to NE. The passage tombs at Knockroe (KK034-019001-) and Baunfree (KK034-031----), Co. Kilkenny are located 10km to the E and 13KM to ENE respectively. A small triangular-shaped stone (H 0.35m; T 0.42m) is located 18m to the WSW and is similar to the triangular-shaped stone associated with the nearby cairn (TS071-021----).
