On level ground in marshy land, centrally placed within almost square graveyard (TS061-035004-). There are three enclosures immediately to the S and SE (TS061-035002-; TS061-035003-; TS061-035006-) and an enclosure (TS061-034----) 200m to the W. The church (int. diam. 14.3m N-S; 5.9m E-W), aligned E-W, survives largely as an undivided rectangular building, defined by grass-covered low walling. It is constructed of limestone rubble, roughly coursed. There is an entrance (Wth 1.5m) at the W end of the S wall. There is a length of upstanding wall (L 1.9m; H 1.3m) to the W of the entrance and a good portion of the S wall (L 9.8m; Wth 0.8m) survives from the SE angle, being at its highest (H above ext. 2.7m) towards the E gable, though this wall is heavily overgrown with ivy and scrub. Otherwise the N, E (H 1m; Wth c. 0.9m) and W (H 0.85m; Wth 0.9m) walls are grass-covered. White (1892, 14) mentions that the church had buttresses, these are at either end of the E gable. The N buttress (H 1.95m; L 1.45m; D c. 1m) is in poorer condition than the S (H 2.95m; L 1.5m; D 1.4m), though the latter is heavily overgrown with ivy. The OS Letters (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 1, 109 (294-5)) mention 'a small window constructed of cut limestone placed at the distance of seven feet [0.17m] from the east gable and measuring on the outside, where it is placed at the height of four feet two inches [1.27m] from the present level of the ground, two feet one inch [0.63m] in height and seven inches [0.17m] in width. It is disfigured on the inside'. There is no evidence of this window near the E gable. The wall immediately S of the S buttress is largely broken out, but this appears to be where the E gable and S wall intersected. Further S along the S wall the upper section of the wall does not survive. Cahill (1982) mentions that 'A stone-cut font, said to have been used at the church, can be seen in a nearby farmyard', however this font cannot be presently located. In rough, level pasture, conjoined to enclosure (TS061-035003-) to W via shared fosse. Oval area (dims 44m NE-SW; 28m NW-SE) defined by scarp (Wth 1.3m; H 0.9m) which is modified by horse jumps WNW-NNE. Appearance of a bank ESE-SSW but on closer inspection the interior just slopes down gradually and uniformly around this arc. Fosse is shallow NNW-NE and is best preserved (overall Wth 6.7m; basal Wth 2.7m; D 0.22m) NE-WSW; is truncated by corner of graveyard (TS061-035004-) and is backfilled by adjacent causeway built to approach horse jump at NW. Outer bank (overall Wth 6.05m; Wth at top 2m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 0.18m) SE-SSE. Interior is stepped with a marked break of slope across centre of interior (long axis NW-SE). Rectangular building footings (TS061-035005-) abuts scarp at W and a possible enclosure and annexe abut scarp at N. Enclosure (TS061-035006-) adjoins exterior to S. In level, rough pasture; conjoined to an enclosure (TS061-035002-) to the E via a shared fosse. A rectangular area (dims. 32m N-S; 25m E-W) defined by an earthen bank (overall Wth 7.45m; Wth at top 1.6m; int. H 0.35m; ext. H 0.7m) to S (L 24m), W (L 30m) and N (L 24m) and by a low scarp (Wth 1.25m; H 0.55m) to E (L 29m). The NE corner is better preserved than the N and E sides. There are three breaks (Wth c. 1.2m) at even intervals in the S bank. The fosse (overall Wth 6.25m; basal Wth 2m; D 0.4m), which is well preserved to the W, is truncated by a relatively modern graveyard wall to the N and is re-cut to the S for drainage purposes. A fosse (overall Wth 7.4m; basal Wth 3.5m; D 0.48m) to the E is shared with conjoined the enclosure to the E. The interior is gently undulating and has rushes across the W half, where a shallow drain (long-axis N-S) is c. 8m from the bank at W. On level ground in marshy land, a medieval church (TS061-035001-) is centrally placed within an almost square graveyard. The graveyard (diam. 42m N-S; 43m E-W) is enclosed by a stone wall with an entrance gate and stile mid-way along the W wall. There is also a stile roughly centrally placed in the E wall. The headstones, which are predominantly of 19th-century date, are all S of the church. The earliest headstone noted bears the date 1827. In pasture, on a low rise. Sub-rectangular area (overall dims. 70m NW-SE; 48m NE-SW) defined by bank (overall Wth 4.75m; Wth at top 2.1m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.7m) at SSE, WSW and NW-sides. Two breaches in WSW-side. Fosse (overall Wth 4.85m; basal Wth 2m; D 0.7m) at WSW and a field drain flanks NW-side. Interior is generally level. D-shaped area (dims. 80m NNW-SSE; 60m ENE-WSW) adjoining to ENE is defined by a curvilinear bank N-NE and is reduced to scarp (Wth 4.3m; H 0.8m) NE-SE which levels out toward SE-end. Linear scarp forms WSW-side. Short portion of fosse at NE, where a sump (D 0.2-0.6m; L 10m; Wth 3m) has been excavated and is currently water filled. Interior has a natural ridge (long-axis c. Inserted into the N face of the E gate pier at the entrance to a farmhouse and yard. The plaque (H 0.53m; Wth 0.51m; D at least 0.23m) is inserted towards the base of the pier. The upper sinister side of the plaque is missing and both the dexter and sinister edge are slightly damaged. It bears a latin inscription in false relief in Roman lettering which reads: ORA[TE] …… [D]O[MI]NI IAC[OB] ……[BA]RONIS ……..EVIS UXORIS D[OMI]N[AE] [MA]RGARETAE NY BR.. FILAE COMITIS THOMO….. … ME FIER FECERUNT [I]N HONOREM 1633 CRUCIFIXI. According to local tradition the stone was originally located on the top of Mayfield Hill, also known locally as Anthony's Hill (Morrisey 1994, 204), the stone was recorded there in 1781 by Austin Cooper (FitzGerald 1904, vol. 6, 146-7). It had been erected there by Lady Margaret O'Brien to mark the place where her husband's funeral cortege rested overnight on its journey from Ballycahill to Fethard (ibid.). According to Morrisey (1994, 204) 'the monument consisted of a 2 ft. [0.6m] square stone surmounted by a cross, with the inscription 'raised out', not carved. After some years it collapsed into the nearby quarry. The cross or head was broken off'. The inscription, with the gaps interpreted, has been translated as 'Pray for the souls of Lord James Butler, Baron of Dunboyne, and of his wife, Lady Margaret O'Brien, daughter of the Earl of Thomond, who caused me to be made in honour of the crucified Christ. 1633 (ibid.). There is a free-standing carved stone (TS061-165001-) associated with the plaque which Crotty (2004, 155) speculated may be the remains of the base of the cross itself (ibid.). At the base of a gate pier where a plaque (TS061-165----) from the base of the wayside cross memorial has been inserted. An octagonal carved stone (dims 0.41m x 0.38m; D 0.27m), which appears to be a cross base for a wayside cross. It has a socket on the upper surface, which only partially survives as the stone has surface fracturing, but appears to have been octagonal. The underside is roughly dressed. The stone, which narrows towards the top, is carved with convex and concave mouldings. According to local tradition the cross and plaque were originally located on the top of Mayfield Hill, also known locally as Anthony's Hill (Morrisey 1994, 204).
