According to the Annals of Innisfallen Bruis moat was constructed in 1193 AD when the castle was built by the foreigners with the consent of Ua Briain and to injure Desmummu therefrom (Mac Airt 1951 318, 319). In grassland at N end of N-S ridge atop high ground with commanding views in all directions, church (TS066-113001-) and graveyard (TS066-113002-) 160m to S. Impressive large flat-topped conical-shaped mound (H approx. 10m from berm and 20m from external ground; top diam. 21m N-S; 22m E-W; base diam. approx. 40m N-S) with wide flat berm (Wth 16m) halfway up the mound now visible from NE through E to S only elsewhere the side of the motte has been quarried into from S through W to NW. Motte covered in trees and vegetation. On top of the motte there is a small two-storey 18th-century summer house (int. dims. 4.2m NE-SW; 4.8m NW-SE 4.8m; wall T 0.8m) built with uncoursed sandstone rubble with fireplace at ground and first floor level. Some skeletal material evident in mound material in exposed face of mound at S may suggest that the mound was used in the prehistoric times possibly as a burial mound. Natural hillock which has been scarped around the mound halfway up its natural height and then the material has been dumped up on top of the hillock resulting in its present form and the presence of a berm around the motte. No evidence of any bailey around the base of the motte. No evidence of any church inside the rectangular graveyard (TS066-113002-), but the ground rises up to a small mound in the centre of the graveyard which may mark the location of the church. On first edition OS 6-inch map of 1840 the church is located N of centre in the graveyard. Church (TS066-113001-) located inside rectangular graveyard (dims. 50m NW-SE; 42m E-W) enclosed by rubble built sandstone wall (int. H 1m; ext. H 2m; wall T 0.55m) of probable 19th-century date inside which contains 18th and 19th-century headstones. Ground in centre of graveyard rises up to a small mound in the centre of the graveyard which may mark the location of the church. Detached three-bay two-storey house, built c. 1760, formerly with attic, paired end windows to first floor front, central return to rear and lean-to extension to west and rear and adjoining rubble limestone possible former wing to east. Formerly used as rectory and now in use as private house. Pitched slate roof with rendered chimneystacks and cast-iron rainwater goods. Smooth rendered walls, ruled-and-lined to east gable. Square-headed window openings with replacement timber windows to front elevation and replacement uPVC to rear, all having limestone sills. Round-headed window to first floor of return. Square-headed door opening with ornately carved limestone doorcase with replacement glazed timber door flanked by limestone pilasters with carved console brackets and surmounted by dentillated carved limestone cornice, formerly having segmental detail or pediment above. Cobbled courtyard to rear of house entered through integral elliptical-headed brick archway in east range. Single- and two-storey outbuildings with pitched slate roofs and rendered and exposed limestone walls. Six-bay east range converted to accommodation, with recent rendered chimneystacks. Four-bay west range of stables has battened fittings to openings. L-plan south range having five bays to longer and two bays to shorter side, with segmental brick arched carriage entrances.
