Situated on a S facing slope of rising ground in an upland area with a motte castle (TN025-037----) 160m to the W, medieval watermill (TN025-039----) located to the S. Burgess Church listed in the ecclesiastical taxation of the Diocese of Killaloe in 1302 (Cal. doc. Ire., 301). The Royal Visitation of 1615 described the building as 'a good church, a good chancell' (Murphy 1914, 219). Medieval church and watermill depicted on 1654-7 Down Survey map of Burges parish (NLI, MS 721). Described in the Civil Survey of 1654-56 as, 'Upon ye. sd. pld stands the parish Church of Borges ye. sd. lands is not cleerely devided' (Simington 1934, 151). All that survives of the church is a small portion of the S wall (L 3m; H 3m) in the centre of a large graveyard (TN025-038003-) containing eighteenth and nineteenth-century headstones. The OS Letters describe both the N and S walls of the church (Wth 24ft [7.32m]) surviving with no evidence of either gable (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 3, 113; Gleeson 1951, 98). A sheela-na-gig (TN025-038002-) discovered by local men in 1932 in the NE corner of the church is now housed in the National Museum (Raftery 1969, 92-3). Discovered by local workmen in 1932 in the NE corner of Burgesbeg church (TN025-038001) and now housed in the National Museum (Cherry 1992, 6). Described by Raftery (1969, 92-3) as a roughly dressed rectangular block (H 0.7m; Wth 0.35m; T 0.33m) with a naked female figure carved in high relief (L 0.62m) on one face. The figure consists of a well-carved round head with round eyes, unclear mouth with bent arms pulling the vulva apart and knees slightly bent with toes pointing downwards. The breasts are barely indicated. Described by Freitag as a 'figure carved in relief on block of sandstone; partly dressed to an approximately rectangular shape. Shape would suggest that figure was once built into the structure and formed part of arch of door or window. Round head with sharp chin; eyes clearly cut circles, but nose and mouth ill-defined; narrow neck. Breasts barely indicated. Arms flexed and hands grasping deeply hollowed out pudenda between widely separated thighs; prominent touchhole or anus below genitals. Knees bent; feet pointing downwards' (Freitag 2004, 126). All that survives of the church (TN025-038001-) is a small portion of the S wall in the centre of a large D-shaped graveyard (approx. dims. 70m N-S x 75m E-W) enclosed by a post-1700 stone wall with entrance gate and stone stile in centre of S wall. The graveyard wall incorporates fragments of the medieval church that have been reused in the building of this wall in the post-1700 period. The graveyard contains post-1700 memorials and is still in use to this day. A sheela-na-gig (TN025-038002) discovered by local men in 1932 in the NE corner of the church is now housed in the National Museum (Raftery 1969, 92-3). A graveslab possible of medieval date was described by Gleeson (1951, 98) as following; 'close to the east end of the south wall is a tombstone (broken) of the Uí Briain family partly in black letter. It is inscribed "Hic jacet Donatus Dermitius als Bryn de Gortmore'. The location of this graveslab within the graveyard could not be identified. Two carved sandstone figures (TN025-038002-/004-), originating from the old church (TN025-038001-) of Burgesbeg. The figure (TN025-038002-), on loan to the National Museum, was found in 1932 by a Mr Wallace inside the church at the base of the wall of the only remaining gable. The second figure from Burgesbeg appears to be the figure (OF005-004004-) now located in the store room at Clonmacnoise. Guest recorded that, 'Mr Wallace has informed me of the finding of two Sheela-na-gigs (TN025-038002-/004-) found lying outside the south wall of Burgesbeg churchyard (TN025-038003-) (Guest 1939, 48). This figure is currently kept in a store room adjoining the cathedral (OF005-004001-) at Clonmacnoise. Described by McMahon and Roberst as a figure with 'bent legs, bulbous eyes and clearly defined ribs. According to Weir there is 'a small protuberance, like an uvula [which is described as a 'hesitant penis'] immediately below what is a small deep hole which most likely represents the anus' (McMahon and Roberts 2001, 119). Recorded by Cherry as an exhibitionist figure that was mistakenly identified as a sheela-na-gig (Cherry 1992, 10). Cross-referenced with OF005-004004-.
