- TS077-035: Castle - unclassified, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CTS077-035----. On the summit of natural outcrop with very steep drop to N and S and a more gradual drop to E. To W there is a gradual fall for c. 20m and then a steep drop. It is in a very commanding position overlooking the River Moyle to W and SW, there is a a road at the foot of the outcrop to the N. Area (dims. 9m N-S; 4m E-W) very small to accommodate a castle, though it may have been on flatter, lower level terrain to the W. There is a length of wall running E-W on the N side of the precipice edge, it is a rubble, drystone wall (Wth 0.7m; H 0.45m; L 24m) which runs down to the W end of the summit. The castle is indicated on the 17th-century Down Survey map (1655-6) and on the 1st (1840) ed. OS 6-inch map. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011

On level ground which falls steeply to W beyond the burial ground, with River Moyle at base of slope. Land rises gently to E, in pasture. Immediately S of former orchard of Annsfort House. It appears as a raised irregular area (diam. 29.5m N-S; 20.2m E-W), however, on the OS 25-inch map the area of the graveyard (dims. 62m E-W; 38m N-S) is indicated as an oval area, tapering towards the E. There is outcrop immediately below the grass. The burial ground appears to have been subject to a lot of disturbance. A water pump was built on the S end of the graveyard and very substantial gravel mound built up around the pump. Ground to E of pump has been hollowed out slightly. Gravel for pump may have been extracted from the immediate area. A trackway (TS077-118----) N-S of burial ground appears to be an old road which runs SE to a ringfort (TS077-038----). In a low-lying area at the base of a steep SW-facing slope with a lot of outcrop protruding from the side of the slope, in woodland with beech trees and rhodadendrons. The spring runs into a little stream to SW which runs SE to join the River Moyle. There is a concrete covering over the well into which a pump has been inserted, it is now disused. There are a number of old discarded items lying around but no evidence of any religious devotion. The landowner referred to the well as 'The Red Well'. On the OS 6-inch map, both 1st (1840) and 2nd (1906) eds, the well is called 'Tobernagloghderg' which translates as 'the well of the red stones'. On a steep S-facing slope in undulating terrain, with River Moyle at base of S slope. No visible trace at ground level, it was levelled by the landowner before 1994. The ringfort was visited in 1982 when it was described as a 'small circular enclosure' in fair condition defined by a bank and ditch (diam. 30m) (Cahill 1982). On the 2nd (1906) ed. OS 6-inch map earthworks are shown running roughly E-W directly above the N quadrant of the monument, though these have also been levelled, they appear to be part of a trackway (TS077-118----). On fairly level ground on a break in slope, the ground drops beyond this to the Moyle river valley below. Ringfort (TS077-038----), now levelled, was formerly visible c. 300m to the W and a graveyard (TS077-036----) is visible c. 500m to NW. The enclosure has been levelled, however c. 9m of the SW quadrant is discernible as a slight curving bank (Wth 2.9m; int. H 0.1m; ext. H 0.47m) which continues over to the N field boundary. The field has been reclaimed. The S half of the enclosure was depicted on the 1st (1840) ed. OS 6-inch map and a smaller portion of the S sector was indicated on the 2nd (1906) ed. In undulating terrain with River Moyle at base of slope to E and SE. A linear feature running N-S of graveyard (TS077-036----) appears to be an old road (Wth 4m) defined by a bank (W bank Wth 4.3m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.68m; E bank Wth 6.6m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 0.59m) on either side. The trackway runs from the graveyard to the top of the SE angle of the field, a distance of c. 100m. It appears to connect with a hollow-way, hachured on the 2nd (1906) ed. On a gentle E-facing slope in gently undulating terrain overlooking to the E the Anner river valley at the base of Slievenamon, in pasture. Monument identified on an aerial photograph (Ordnance Survey 1993). A large enclosure (diam. 60m N-S; 56m E-W) defined by a low, broad, ploughed-out bank (int. H 0.05-0.15m; ext. H 0.12-0.25m; Wth at top 2.6-2.8m; Wth at base 5.7-8.4m). The bank in the W quadrant is not visible at ground level. In the ESE sector the bank is completely levelled or there may have been an entrance at this point. The interior is slightly concave. ## Architectural heritage (National Inventory of Architectural Heritage)

- Annsfort, house, 1800–1840, Regional interest, registry number 22207706, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=TS&regno=22207706. Detached four-bay two-storey house, built c. 1820, with single-storey addition to east with lean-to corrugated-iron roofed extension to rear, and recent porch addition to front. Pitched slate roof with rendered chimneystacks. Painted rendered walls. Square-headed openings with timber sash sliding windows and limestone sills, three-over-six pane to first floor and six-over-six pane to ground floor. Square-headed door opening with timber panelled door and plain overlight. Multiple-bay single-storey outbuildings to east having pitched slate roofs, roughcast render over rubble limestone walls, with timber battened doors and some timber sliding sash windows. Concrete pointed arch pedestrian entrance and boundary wall to garden at east. Rendered piers and walls to north elevation.
