In flat terrain, the monument is bisected by a field boundary with meadow on the E side and tillage (barley) on the W side. Castlegrace house, a Georgian house, is located c. 200m to the SE. There is a large oak tree in the centre of the field boundary where the monument formerly stood. Thre is no visible trace of the enclosure above ground. According to landowner the field was used as an airstrip in the 1930s. It is depicted on the 1st (1840) OS 6-inch map as a circle with some trees in the interior. It may have been a tree-ring or a ringfort re-used as a tree-ring. On a slight rise in relatively flat terrain, the church is centrally placed in a roughly rectangular graveyard (TS087-026001-). Composed of sandstone and limestone rubble, roughly coursed with cut stone quoins. The parish church of Tullaghorton (ext. dims. 6.5m N-S; 21m E-W; wall T 0.86m; H of side walls 3m) has a slight base-batter (H 0.7m; W 0.2m), except on the W gable, and is entered through a doorway at the W end of the N wall. Only lower jambstones, with double chamfer, survive on the E side. In the W gable there is a flat-headed single-light, with external chamfer and limestone and sandstone jambs. The W end of the N wall is in a state of collapse and the SW angle is gone. In the E gable is a two-light ogee window with external chamfer and internal rebate, the central mullion missing, within a round-headed, inwardly splaying embrasure. At the E end of the N wall there is the E splay of a window embrasure; the window has been broken out. At the E end of the S wall, the W side of a window embrasure survives, falling inward, but the light has been broken out. The gables are both intact, though obscured by ivy. The W gable is tilting outwards badly, with masonry pulling away from the wall at the W end of the N wall. On slight rise in relatively flat terrain, church (TS087-026----) is centrally placed in a roughly rectangular graveyard, though it extends out in the NW (diam. 55m E-W; 30-48m N-S). Headstones in the graveyard are of 18th and 19th century date, the earliest visible dates to 1764. There is some speculation as to who built the castle. Philip de Wigornia had a grant of the feudal Barony of Kilteninan from King John in 1194, which probably included the land of Castle Grace and Basilia, the heiress of the de Wigornias or Worcesters, brought this Barony to the Berminghams late in the 13th-century (Graves 1876-78, 51-2). However the castle was probably built by William 'le Grace', styled 'Lord of Grace Castle', a grandson of Raymond 'le Gros' (Redmond 1885-6, 440). William's one child, Margaret inherited Grace Castle and it passed by her marriage into the de Poer family. In the 17th-century the castle is described as 'a little castle covered with thatch, and two turretts within a Bawne whereof the sd ... Castle and Turretts are pt all lately rebuilt at the chardge of the Comonwealth' (Simington 1931, vol.1, 371). The traceried window in the S wall of the great hall is similar to one at Ferns, Co. Wexford, for which Leask suggests a date not much later than 1250 (Leask 1951, 71) but which probably dates to the first quarter of the 13th-century. Situated on gentle S facing slope in gently undulating terrain, in pasture. River Tar located c. 200m to E. Constructed of limestone and sandstone rubble, roughly coursed. High base-batter composed of small sandstone rubble (H 2.9m-3.5m; W c. 0.3m). Castle consists of a square bawn with angle-towers on each corner, all circular except the NW tower which is square. There was a stone hall (c.19m N-S x 6.6m E-W) along W side in interior, the W wall of bawn forming W wall of the hall. The hall was lit at first-floor level by large traceried windows set in round-headed embrasures, two survive in the W wall, one blocked up and one in the S wall with surviving tracery indicating a two-light trefoil-headed window with quatrefoil above. The bawn (dims. 19m N-S; 27m E-W; T c. 1.5m) had a wall-walk with a high parapet, however, only the W side is original. The present S wall is built on the line of the original wall, while the later N and E walls were built beyond it. Only a small portion of the NE angle-tower survives (E wall L 3.6m; N wall L 7.4m). The SE tower has been modified and has largely collapsed. A doorway at first-floor level probably led onto the wall-walk of the bawn. The SW angle tower was accessed from the internal angle of bawn which led to a corbelled chamber where a fireplace has been inserted. The tower is lit by loops, some of which have been modified and at first-floor level there is a narrow cross-loop with circular terminals and sandstone surrounds. Access to the first floor has been altered, it is now along the inner face of the S wall of bawn. A doorway at second-floor level leads onto the W wall-walk. The NW tower is three-storeys high, each level being lit and protected by simple loops. It was entered at ground-floor level from the bawn where a short passage leads N into a small vaulted chamber. In the SW angle there is a slight kick-out, probably to accommodate an internal stair which has been removed and a later stair inserted. This leads to the upper floors, the first-floor is vaulted while a later wooden roof has been built over the second floor. There is evidence of some modification of the castle, probably in the 16th century, on the W wall of the bawn, with the insertion of a, now blocked-up, ogee-headed window and a flat-headed window at first-floor level. Freestanding gable-fronted cruciform-plan Roman Catholic church, dated 1829, having two-bay nave elevation, bellcote to entrance gable, and with bevelled corners between full-height transepts and sacristy. Pitched artificial slate roofs, with cut sandstone pinnacles to front gable and cut sandstone bellcote with crenellations and pinnacles. Rendered walls and plinth, with snecked cut sandstone and limestone slightly advanced entrance bay. Four-centred arched openings to front elevation having cut sandstone voussoirs and impost courses, with leaded stained-glass window and timber battened double doors with stained-glass fanlight. Round-arched door opening to sacristy with roughly dressed limestone voussoirs and doorcase to sacristy, having timber battened door and leaded fanlight. Pointed-arch openings to nave and transepts with stained-glass windows with timber Y-tracery and timber battened doors. Timber screen to entrance, with carved timber gallery over, and carved timber confessional. Sculpted marble and render reredos with broken based pediment and engaged Ionic columns, incorporating canted stained-glass windows, manufactured c.1925. Carved marble altar rails, altar and tabernacle. Render ceiling rose to crossing. Cast-iron pews. Graveyard to site. Detached three-bay single-storey former national school, built c. 1830, having lower two-bay addition to east gable, and recent flat-roof extension to south elevation of addition. Pitched slate roofs with partly-rendered rubble limestone chimneystack to west gable and red brick chimneystack to addition, with eaves course. Roughcast rendered walls with recent limestone plaque to east gable of addition. Pointed arch window openings to north elevation, with timber sliding sash four-over-twelve pane windows, having tracery to upper part of top sashes, without sills. Detached complex irregular-plan house, built c. 1860, oriented north-south and comprising three-bay two-storey over basement main block, having lower single-bay two-storey return to centre of north side elevation, single-bay single-storey porch to east of return. Attached to north is lower three-bay two-storey over basement middle block, further north is block which projects beyond west elevation of rest of building, is same height as main house and is three-bay two-storey over basement to east and north and two-bay two-storey over basement to west. Single-storey over basement further block to north-west corner of complex, with three-bay west elevation. Hipped slate roofs to larger blocks, skirt plan and with oversailing sheeted eaves to main block, pitched slate elsewhere, with rendered chimneystacks, H-plan arrangement to main block. Roughcast rendered walls. Square-headed window timber sliding sash windows throughout, with limestone sills and mainly six-over-six pane, except for middle block and return which have three-over-three pane windows to east and north elevations respectively. North elevation of return also has round-headed fixed paned timber window with spoked fanlight. Segmental-headed doorway to main block, with rendered doorcase having decoratively-glazed sidelights, cobweb fanlight and timber panelled door, approached by flight of cut limestone steps. Round-headed door opening to west, garden, front of middle block, with has cut limestone doorcase with plinths, impost lintel, carved archivolt and raised keystone, with spoked timber fanlight and timber panelled door, approached by cut limestone steps. Square-headed timber panelled door with paned overlight to porch to east elevation of middle block. Building retains interior features. Pitched slate roof with overhanging eaves and painted rendered end chimneystacks. Roughcast rendered walls. Square-headed timber sliding sash six-over-six pane windows, tripartite to ground floor of south elevation. Elliptical-headed door opening to north elevation, having painted render doorcase comprising Ionic pilasters with render archivolt, cobweb fanlight, lintel with fluted detail, and timber panelled door, with tooled limestone threshold and approached by flight of cut limestone steps. Square-headed door opening to south elevation, having cut limestone engaged columns with fluting below moulded capitals and having blocks over with star detail, having moulded cornice above. Square-headed openings, having timber sliding sash windows, six-over-six panes to ground floor front and to gables, and six-over-three panes to first floor front, all without sills. Multiple-bay two-storey building running east-west to south-east of mill. Range of outbuildings running east-west in yard further to south. Pitched slate roofs throughout, with eaves course, main block having partly-rendered brick chimneystacks and hipped dormer windows with slated roofs and sides. Rendered rubble sandstone walls, being slate-hung to south gable of main block. Square-headed window openings throughout, with slate-hanging to lintels and mainly nine-pane timber casement windows, mostly without sills. Blocked attic windows to south gable of main block. Some replacement windows and door to north end of east elevation. Elliptical-headed carriage arch to south-end of east elevation, with cut-stone voussoirs. South-most building has rendered brick chimneystack and timber sliding sash windows. Rubble stone boundary wall to road frontage forms yard to front of mill, with mill manager's house to north, and multiple-bay single-storey outbuilding to south with lean-to corrugated-iron roof. Slightly advanced dressed limestone elliptical archway with cut limestone voussoirs, impost course and coping courses, with double-leaf timber battened door.
