Situated on the crest of a rise in undulating terrain, with Castlelough House 450m to the N and the shoreline of Lough Derg 130m to the W. Depicted as a tree-ring and not as an antiquity on the 1840 ed. OS 6-inch. The map depiction and the close proximity to Castlelough House would suggest that this was a tree-ring. An early eighteenth-century house, built c. 1720 which is depicted on two early to mid-eighteenth-century estate maps as a two-storey building with five bays, a central door with three dormer windows, a hipped roof with a chimney at either end of the roof and a possible wing on either side. The present building has a Victorian front built on c. 1860. The old part of the house is of double pile construction. The stairs is beautifully carved, reminiscent of Damer House, Roscrea and like Damer House the balustrades go directly onto the step. In the basement there are corner corbel supports in two separate rooms, but their function is unclear. In a 'cottage' in the yard a coin dating to c. 1690 was found behind the fire mantle. Described in the Civil Survey (1654-6) as the 'castle of Castleloghy and oppossitt to the castle standeth a thatcht Tennemt' (Simington 1934, vol. 2, 153). 'Donogh O Bryen of Bellanaha Esqr Irish Papist' is listed as proprietor in 1640 (ibid., 152). The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Situated on a SW-facing slope of rising ground overlooking a stream to the S. A circular area (diam. 32m N-S) enclosed by a tree-lined earthen bank (Wth 2.5m; ext. H 1.3m) with a wide flat-bottomed fosse (Wth 3m; D 0.7m). No entrance feature visible. The depiction on the OS 6-inch map along with the presence of trees on the bank suggest the use of this site as a tree-ring. It may originally have been a ringfort. ## Architectural heritage (National Inventory of Architectural Heritage)

- Castlelough, country house, 1700–1840, Regional interest, registry number 22401305, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=TN&regno=22401305. Detached three-bay two-storey two-pile country house, of various dates. Front block, built c.1820, has canted bay windows flanking open projecting flat-roof porch. Earlier rear block of c.1720, is four-bay and three-storey with dormer attic and has single and two-storey additions to rear. Hipped slate roofs with rendered chimneystacks, cast-iron rainwater goods and with moulded render parapet except to rear elevation of rear block. Rendered walls, with cut limestone quoins and plinth to front block. Timber sliding sash windows throughout, with cut-stone sills. Later block has one-over-one pane windows and earlier block has exposed sash boxes with wide variety of small-pane window, including horizontally-sliding timber sash windows to ground floor, some double sash windows and narrow single lights to west elevation. Brackets and render cornices to bay windows and with render surrounds to all other windows of front block. Tripartite window over porch has render pilasters, frieze, cornice and brackets to mullions. Canted bay window to west gable of front block. Square-headed opening with replacement timber panelled door, overlight and sidelights. Yard of outbuildings to northwest with stone belfry, pitched, hipped and half-hipped artificial slate roofs, rendered and rubble stone walls and with square-headed and segmental-arch openings having timber sash and casement windows.
