The castle of Castletown (Baile an Chaisleáin/town of the castle) which was the ancient residence of the O'Brien family of Arra, in the parish of Castlownarra, barony of Owney and Arra, stands on a low rise of ground on flat pasture with Lough Derg immediately to the W. The castle was the stronghold of the family of Mac Ui Brien Aradh of the Clann Brian Ruadh, who crossed the Shannon from Clare after the battle of Dysert O'Dea in 1318 (Gleeson and Costello 1943, 5). In 1606 as part of a surrender and regrant scheme, King James I granted Murtagh, son and heir of Tirlagh Mc Ibrien Arragh, lands in Limerick, Tipperary, Clare and Galway which included, 'The manor, town and lands of Castleton in the cantred of Arra, containing 3 carucates' (Cal. pat. rolls Ire., Jas., 89). In the same grant he was also granted the; 'the advowsons and right of patronage of the rectories and vicarages of Castletowne [TN019-002001-] and Muse - the vicarages of Yeoghill [Youghal TN014-045001-], Borges [Burgesbeg TN025-038001-], and Slewybogga - the rectories and vicarages of Finnaught [Finnoe TN010-020001-] and Mudrynie [Modreeny TN010-084001-], and the rectories of Dwarra [Dorrha TN005-005001-] and Bunnacham [Bonahum TN001-013001-]; except all manors, &c. belonging to the see of Killalowe, all lands belonging to abbeys, &c. the crown's right by any other means than by the said surrender, the right of sir Terence O'Brien, knt. second brother of the said Murtagh, and the right of all the free tenants or any other persons to the premises or any part thereof' (ibid.). Murtagh was also granted a 'License to hold a thursday market at Castleton, a fair at Pallaice [TN034-086001-] on St Luke's day, and the day folowing a court baron monthly at Castleton, and a court leet half yearly at Pallaice, before his seneschal or seneschals. This grant was passed upon his surrender, dated 27 Feb. 1605, of the country or territory of Arra other wise Mc I-Brian Arra of Dowgh [Tuath]-Arra, lying in Limerick, Tipperary, Clare and Galway Cos' (ibid.). Donogh O Bryen [O'Brien] of Ballina Castle (TN025-094002-), Irish Papist, is listed as the proprietor in 1640 (ibid.). Castle with gatehouse, slate house (TN019-001002-), an orchard, a garden, watermill, small clustered settlement, four eel weirs and nearby parish church described in the 1654-56 Civil Survey of Tipperary as follows; 'Uppon the s[ai]d. lands of Donogh O Bryen standeth the Castle of Castletowne sctuated close by the Shannon together wth. a barbicon & a Slate house as alsoe a Garden & an Orchard a watermill [TN019-003----] and eight thatch tennemts. there alsoe standeth the Parish Church [TN019-002001-] of Castletowne. There alsoe belongeth to the lands of Castletowne fower Ile [eel] weires on the River of Shannon betwixt Beallanaha [Ballina] and Killalow [Killaloe]' (Simington 1934, vol. 2, 153). The survey recorded that 'There alsoe belonged a Courte Barron to the sd. lands of Castletowne to be held at Castletowne by lettrs. Pattents (as wee are informed)' (ibid.). The Civil Survey recorded that the owner Donogh O'Brien of Ballina was proprietor in fee as he had purchased the property of Castletown from 'the heires Gennerall of Sr. Therlagh [Turlough] O Byren (vizt) Onora, Margarett & More Bryen & others their ffeoffees of six pl[oughlan]ds three q[ua]rters & one sixteenth p[ar]te of a pl[oughlan]d of the s[ai]d. eight pl[oughlan]ds. These lands were then 'mortgadged in the yeare 1640 by the sd. Donogh to Richard late Earle of Corke (as wee are informed)' (ibid.). Listed in 1698 as the 'manor Court of Castletowne Arra' which was the property recovered by the Right Honourable Charles, Earl of Corke and Burlington, Roger Power Esq. demised, and James Salmon, gent. listed as tenant (Anon. 1869, 73). A large three-storey rectangular block (ext. dims. 13.35m E-W; 6.5m N-S; wall T 1.75m) orientated on an E-W axis with a nineteenth-century house added to the SE angle. There are two main ground-floor entrances, both of which are blocked, one in the centre of the S wall consisting of a two-centred arch with punch-dressed chamfered jambs with horizontal tooling across the face of the jambs and the second doorway with two-centred arch is located at the N end of the E gable. A first-floor doorway is inserted into the centre of the S wall with external stone stairs, probably added in the nineteenth century. The ground floor is partially destroyed with a barrel vault surviving over the W and later, probably nineteenth century, alterations to the E. There is good evidence of wicker centring on the underside of the barrel vault. All upper floors were wooden carried on stone corbels. A partially destroyed fireplace occupies the centre of the N wall at first-floor level with a well-preserved fireplace at the W end of the N wall at second-floor level. A tall rectangular chimney stack protrudes from the top of the N wall. The doorway arch forms, along with the stone dressing on the jambstones, indicates a seventeenth-century date for construction of this large fortified house. The castle (TN019-001001-) of Castletown stands 90m to N and a medieval mill (TN019-003----) stood to the E as shown on the 1654-5 Down Survey map of Castletown parish (NLI, Ms 721). A second castle site (TN019-004----) depicted on the 1840 ed. OS map where it is shown standing 220m to SSE. In 1423 a papal letter sent to the priory of St. John's Nenagh (TN021-042----), which mandated the assignment of Cornelius O'Hurley, perpetual vicar of the parish church of Magnyo (Moynoe CL029-003001-) in the diocese of Killaloe, son of a priest and an unmarried woman, to be promoted to 'the rectory of Balemkasleanara [Baile an Chaisleáin Arra]' of the patronage of laymen, whose consent is to be given 'so long void, because Cornelius Omoleampull [O'Molampy] held it for more than a year without having himself ordained priest, whether it became void in said way, or by the death of Odo Yhogan [O'Hogan]' (Gleeson and Costello 1943, 5; Cal. papal letters Vol. 7, 267). In 1460 there is a reference to 'Donato Ohogayn [O'Hogan]' and the rectory of 'Bale Inccuyssleaynara' and the perpetual vicarage of 'Teampallincalayth' (Templeachally TN025-016001-) (Gleeson and Costello 1943, 35). In 1494 there is a reference to Maurice O'Brien, clerk of the diocese of Killaloe and the parish church of Baile an Chaisleáin Arra, which had been in the possession of 'Donato Ohogayn [O'Hogan]' (Gleeson and Costello 1943, 83). In 1511 there is a reference to John O'Hogan, clerk of the diocese of Killaloe and the rectory of Baile an Chaisleáin Arra which was united to the church of Youghalarra, Burgesbeg, Ballina and Templeachally (Gleeson and Costello 1943, 95). The parish of Castletown and its patronage by the O'Brien clan was described in the 1654-56 Civil Survey as; 'lying and being in the Terrytory of Arra being an Intire Rectory and not Impropriat the two third p[ar]tes of the Tythes great & smale belonging to the Presenter of Killalow, and the third pte of the Tythe great & Smale belonging to the Viccar, the Right of Presentacon to the Viccarage being in Mc I Bryen Arra. The Tythes great and Smale of the sd. Parish was worth in the yeare 1640 £10' (Simington 1934, 152). There was one acre of glebeland belonging to the vicar of the church which was situated to the 'west of the Churchyard finced round wth a ditch and at present wast, which was worth in the yeare 1640 2s. 6d.' (Simington 1934 vol. 2, 152). In 1615 the Royal Visitation of the Diocese of Killaloe recorded that Daniel Kennedy was the 'officiating vicar', and that the church was in good repair (Gleeson 1915, vol. 2, 510). The 1654-56 Civil Survey recorded that in this townland stood the ‘Castle of Castletowne (TN019-004----) sctiated close by the Shannon together with a barbicon & a Slate house (TN019-001001-) as alsoe a Garden & an Orchard a watermill (TN019-003----) and eight thatch tennem[en]ts, there also standeth the Parish Church of Castletowne (TN019-002001-)’ (Simington 1934 vol. 2, 153). The 'Old Mill' located 50m to W may have been the site of the medieval watermill mentioned in the Civil Survey. Church ruins described in 1951 as follows; 'The old church was situate by the lake shore in Mr. Parker's demense but such remains of it as are now left are of comparatively modern post Reformation construction. It contains a tomb (TN019-002003-) of the Ui Briain Aradh with an inscription. Here are buried some of the Clann Brian Ruadh and Brian Ban chieftains, including Bishop Moriertagh Mac Ui Briain who was educated at Oxford and was first Protestant Bishop of Killaloe. The tomb of his son, Sir Tirlagh Mac Ui Briain and of the latter's wife, the Lady Elizabeth Butler, daughter of Earl Walter, the 11th Earl of Ormond (Walter of the Rosaries) may be seen in Iniscaltra, where he was buried 'in a Friars habit in a superstitious island in the Shannon according to the contemporary State Papers' (Gleeson 1951-2, 97). The present remains consist of a restored apse-ended church (ext. dims 7.6m N-S; 15.46m E-W; wall T 0.68m) constructed with uncoursed sandstone rubble. A buttress was added to the NE angle with a late seventeenth/early eighteenth-century single-storey building (ext. dims. 5.1m N-S; 4.45m E-W; wall T 0.6m) added to the W gable. This small building has a fireplace in the W gable with a protruding external chimney stack. The three windows in the N wall of the church and two in the S wall are later insertions. A two-centred doorway with punch-dressed chamfered jambs with chamfer stops in the centre of the W gable is not in its original position. The W gable also has a small round-arched bellcote. There is a round-arched window with no cut stone visible in the centre of the E gable. The graveyard (TN019-002002-) is enclosed by a nineteenth-century stone wall and contains slate headstones with good examples of folk art. This is probably a late sixteenth/early seventeenth-century church with a possible W extension added in the late seventeenth/early eighteenth-century when the door was placed in the W gable and the windows rebuilt in the N and S walls. The stone lid or grave cover of a possible chest tomb of 17th century date belonging to the O'Brien family of Arra lies recumbent against the external face of the N wall of the present church ruins at Castletown Arra. Stone tomb cover recorded and drawn in 1868 when the following details about this tomb were described; 'Morine, or Matilda Carroll, wife of Terence Mac I Brien of Arra. A tombstone in the old churchyard of Castletown Arra, county of Tipperary, bears the following curious inscription, which the present writer, accompanied by a few friends, discovered, and, as far as legible, copied for the first time in the summer of 1868: 'EGO. TEREN. BRIEN. HOC. IN. MEO. ET. IN. MEE UXORIS. MORIN. CARYL. NOIE. FIERI. FECI. OC. MONUMENTU. SECUDNU. SUI. ETIMOLOGIAM. MEMORIE. CAUSA. FIT. PER' . The letters here are effaced. A rectilinear ditched enclosure, of uncertain date, is visible as a cropmark on Bing aerial photographs dating from 2012 (http://www.bing.com/maps/?v=2&cp=52.882189~-8.395395&lvl=17&dir=0&sty=h&form=LMLTCC , accessed 05 February 2012). The monument is located 170m E of the shoreline of Lough Derg. Nearby monuments include a medieval church (TN019-002001-) 150m to N, a possible medieval mill site (TN019-003----) 190m to the NNE and a medieval castle site (TN019-004----) 220m to the E. The enclosure which is aligned ENE-WSW on a similar axis to the nearby church is bisected by a field boundary running from NNE-SSW. The cropmark is best visible on the W side of this field boundary. The cropmark comprises of an inner bank and external ditch which defines a rectangular-shaped area. There is the cropmark of a possible trackway connecting the E angle of this enclosure with the medieval castle site (TN019-004----) to the E. The close proximity of the church, mill and castle suggests a possible relationship between these monuments. The rectilinear shape of the monument along with its close proximity to the medieval church (TN019-002001-), mill (TN019-003----) and castle (TN019-004----) suggests that this cropmark could be the remains of a medieval moated grange, or moated house. Alternatively the enclosure may be associated with ‘the Slate house’ or ‘Garden & orchard’ that is mentioned in the 1654-56 Civil Survey description of the Parish of Castletowne. The 1654-56 Civil Survey recorded that in this townland stood the ‘Castle of Castletowne (TN019-004----) sctiated close by the Shannon together with a barbicon & a Slate house (TN019-001001-) as alsoe a Garden & an Orchard a watermill (TN019-003----) and eight thatch tennem[en]ts, there also standeth the Parish Church of Castletowne (TN019-002001-)’ (Simington 1934 vol. 2, 153).
