On a low rise of ground on flat pasture with good views in all directions. Clogher Castle (TS046-038----) lies 300m to the ESE and Clogher Church (TS046-039----) lies 400m to the SSE. The poorly preserved remains of a three storey 17th-century fortified L-plan house constructed from roughly coursed limestone rubble with a base-batter. Only the NW end of the building survives with the partial remains of the NW (L 6.9m; overall L 8.6m; wall T 1m) and NE (L 4.3m) walls surviving with a two-storey garderobe tower (int. dims. 1.85m N-S; 1.55m E-W; wall T 0.6m) at the N angle. The ground floor is accessed from a destroyed doorway (Wth 1.4m) at the N end of the NW wall with a bar slot visible in the thickness of the NW wall. A slit ope window is visible in the NW wall, with a possible gun loop on either side of the window embrasure. All floors were wooden carried on floor joists. The garderobe tower was accessed from a narrow segmental-arched doorway in the N angle at first-floor level with an internal rebate for the door frame. There is a destroyed window in the NW wall with a possible destroyed oriel window at the E end of the NE wall. The latter feature appears to be corbelled out beyond the external face of the NE wall at first-floor level with the garderobe tower supporting the NW side of this feature. Only the NW embrasure of this feature survives making precise identification impossible. There was a possible lean-to roof over the garderobe. No cut stone survives in the window surrounds. It was described in the OS Letters (1840) as a small fragment of a castle (O'Flanagan 1930, vol.1, 104). On a low rise of ground on flat pasture in undulating countryside. A large recumbent slab (dims. 2.2m x 1.8m x 0.5m) situated in an overgrown grove of trees with rubble debris dumped inside the grove. There are several large boulders scattered around the interior of the grove which are impossible to examine due to the dumping of debris and the overgrown nature of the monument. Crawford describes the monument as consisting of a 'large recumbent slab 7 feet 6 inches [2.28m] by 5 feet 9 inches [1.7m] by 2 feet [0.6m] thick, supported on small stones 12 or 15 inches [0.3m or 0.37m] above the ground. It is close to a house on the roadside and one end is built into a stable (Crawford 1910, 47). These buildings are now destroyed with debris from their demolition dumped on top of the recumbent slab. Ó Nualláin and De Valera (1982, vol.4, 99)were unsure if these stones were the remains of an authentic megalthic tomb. At the N end of a N-S ridge with good views in all directions, with Clogher Church and graveyard (TS046-039001; TS046-039003-) 250m to the S and overlooking Graigone Castle (TS046-036----) 300m to the WNW. All that survives are the lower wall courses of a rectangular castle (ext. dims. approx. 10m N-S; 18m E-W; wall T 1.3m) surviving to a maximum height of 1.7m and constructed with roughly coursed limestone rubble. The N wall of the castle is the best preserved being incorporated into a field boundary, while the W and S walls are grass covered with the E wall being totally destroyed. There are the possible remains of a bawn (TS046-038001-) to the N, facing onto a steep cliff face, and a possible retaining wall on the W face of a ridge, to the S of the castle. The latter may be the remains of a second bawn which may have been located to the S of the castle enclosing the top of the ridge. A possible roadway (TS046-039004-) in the field to the S appears to run between Clogher Church and Clogher Castle. On top of S end of N-S ridge with good extensive views in all directions, with Clogher Castle and bawn (TS046-038---- and TS046-038001-) 250m to the N, at the end of the ridge. A rectangular church (ext. dims. 10m N-S; 21.7m E-W; wall T 1m) constructed from roughly coursed, limestone masonry with a base-batter. Two doorways survive directly opposite each other W of centre in N and S side walls. The S doorway has been reconstructed during a recent clean-up scheme which was carried out in 1991 (P. Holland 1991, Tipperary South Riding County Museum files) while only the lower jambs of a chamfered limestone doorway survive in the N wall. The internal face of the W wall has been re-pointed during the graveyard clean-up scheme. Two broken-out windows, E of centre, in both the N and S walls are opposite each other, and there is a small rectangular aumbry at the E end of the S wall. The E gable only survives four courses high, with no surviving remains of the original window. O'Donovan describes the church as an uninteresting ruin about three centuries old with all its features destroyed, with the gables being reduced to the height of the side walls and with a large gap in the E gable (O'Flanagan 1930, vol.1, 103). A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
