Listed in the SMR (1992) and RMP (1998) as ford possible. The Civil Survey refers to the ford of Farneybridge which suggests the river was crossable at Farneybridge where there was a bridge. Classification has been changed to bridge possible. The 'ffoord of ffarnybridge' is mentioned in Civil Survey 1654-55. A limestone bridge known as Farney bridge consists of a four span, round arch bridge with one cut-water at centre upstream to NE. Voussoirs of well-cut stone. Vault/span of bridge built in two phases, NE end being 2.86m wide which abutts the SW end 3.77m wide, both rest on side walls which appear to be single period. Span 2.4m wide and 2.4m high above stone and concrete river bed. River currently only utilises two central arches, side arches being overgrown. Surface of bridge is fairly flat, stone parapet 0.8m high and 0.23m wide. Width of bridge from inner parapet faces is 5.8m. Two phase construction suggests a possible early date of construction as bridges were widened following the 1727 Road Act. Situated at the base of a gentle N-facing slope with a marshy river valley immediately to the N. Depicted as an oval-shaped enclosure on the 1st ed. (1843) OS 6-inch map but not shown on the 1952-3 ed. Not visible at ground level. The field boundary (Wth 1.2m; H 0.67m) to the W curves out to accommodate the former site. The field boundary to the N may be on the line of the N bank of the enclosure. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Situated on the summit of a hill in rolling pastureland. A roughly circular area (diam. 44m N-S; 32.5m E-W) defined by a gravelly earth and stone bank (Wth 1.3m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 1.6m). On the 1st (1843) and 2nd (1952-53) ed. OS 6-inch map a limekiln is depicted in E sector. A large portion of the E sector has been quarried out to provide stone for this kiln and at NE the bank has been truncated. No trace of a fosse or entrance feature. Situated in gently undulating terrain. Described in the OS Letters as 'the ruins of an old house or castle called Caislean Dubh or Black Castle' (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 1, 178). The site has been levelled and its site occupied by modern barns and sheds behind old farm buildings. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Situated on a very gentle E-facing slope in undulating pastureland. Depicted as an oval enclosure on the 1st ed. (1840) OS 6-inch map with a roughly N-S field boundary along the edge at W. The site has been levelled, however, there is a faint suggestion of an enclosure (diam. c. 36m N-S) defined by a very subtle scarp and kink in the field boundary forming the W edge of the site. The edge of the site not visible in the E sector. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Situated on a very gentle SE-facing slope in rough, wet terrain. The site is called 'Tullaun' on both the 1st and latest ed. OS 6-inch maps which according to OS Name Books means 'the name of a remarkable mound' (O'Donovan et al. c. 1840). The site is difficult to assess as it is heavily overgrown with scrub and has been quarried into. It appears to be enclosed by a high bank surviving in the E sector (Wth 2m; int. H 1.66m; ext. H 0.8m) but this may have been altered as a result of later disturbance. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. A field wall has been built on he edge of the site at NW and a field boundary c. 15m S of the site curves out, appearing to respect an existing site. This may indicate that the original site was larger. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Located on a gentle E-facing slope in undulating pastureland with a nearby ringfort (TN041-057) to the SE. The site was levelled c. 1973 according to the landowner but is still clearly visible as a raised, roughly circular platform (diam. 41m N-S; 37.5m E-W) defined by a very gradual sloping scarp (H 1.04m) and outer fosse (Wth 5m; D 0.22m). There is a suggestion of a causeway in the SE sector (Wth 5m). The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Situated on a slight break in a SW-facing slope, in undulating pastureland. Identified on an aerial photograph taken in June 1973 (GSIAP, S 466/7) as a roughly square area partially defined by a kink in the field boundary. The site consists of a raised platform (c. 34m N-S; 20m E-W) with a gently sloping scarp (H 0.4-6m). A neighbouring landowner recalled a local tradition of this being a burial ground and remembered that when the field was being tilled the area from the kink in the field boundary down to the road was never tilled but was deliberately left undisturbed. The N and W sectors are delineated by a hedgerow. The E side is quite clearly defined by a scarp but the S side is less clear - the platform sloping down in an irregular fashion. The date of the burial ground is unknown and the site is not noted on the 1st ed. (1843) OS 6-inch map. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). Situated on a low ridge with good views in all directions. Only the W half of a possible hexagonal bawn wall survives from SE (L 13.1m E-W) through SW (L 17.35m E-W) to NW (L 12.5m N-S; wall T 0.9m), elsewhere the wall has been levelled with modern farm buildings along the line of the E half of the building. The wall is constructed from roughly coursed limestone rubble built on natural rock outcrop. The large masonry boulders used in the wall may indicate an early medieval date for its construction. A putlog-hole is visible off-centre to the S on the W wall with a blocked-up gateway (Wth 2m; H 2.6m) in the centre of the SW wall. A basal plinth visible along the internal face of the wall acted as foundation for the wall. Quoin stones were undressed and cut at an angle to facilitate the return of the adjoining wall at an angle which gives the bawn its distinctive shape. This may be the remains of the bawn enclosing a building (TN041-088001) referred to in the Civil Survey (1654-6) as 'the ould stump of a stone house in Ballycormocke' (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 66).
