In undulating pasture, atop low rise. Very little surface trace. Level, roughly circular area (dims. c. 8m N-S; c. 10m E-W) on E side of natural rise (long-axis E-W). Steep natural downslope to N, E and S. Not named or depicted on 1840-41 OS 6-inch map, but depicted as a small mound on latest edition. Described by Flynn (1913, 11) as 'a remarkable little cairn or tumulus', who also provides a plan and section (ibid., 12, no.4). Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011 - TS067-011001: Castle - ringwork, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CTS067-011001-. Within area of active gravel quarry, surrounding land in undulating pasture. No visible trace as entire area of monument quarried. Depicted on 1st ed. OS 6-inch map (1840-41) and on the latest ed. as an oval enclosure (dims. c. 50m N-S; c. 38m E-W) defined by multiple banks and fosses on current OS 6-inch map. Flynn (1913, 11) describes the monument as a 'large mound slightly oval in shape. Fosses and ramparts have again been constructed where the mound cuts the hill-top, but the sides are merely scarped away', a plan and section is also included (ibid., 12, No.2). Monument clearly visible on aerial photograph taken in 1966 (CUCAP 13 July 1966, APA 14) but had been badly damaged by quarrying by 1974 (GSI 16.4.1974, R. 516/515). Within area of active gravel quarry, surrounding land in undulating pasture. No visible trace, it would appear that most, if not all, of this monument has been quarried, though a portion of the E quadrant may survive. Depicted as oval area defined by one or two enclosing elements on 1840-41 OS 6-inch map and as an oval enclosure (dims. c. 32m N-S; c. 28m E-W) defined by a scarp on the latest edition. A possible external fosse is also depicted E-S-SW by a second row of hachures on the latest edition. According to the OS Letters (c. 1840) 'a considerably large fort lies to the northwest [of the church TS-67-011004-]…The parapet is partly visible still on the south side' (O'Flanagan 1930, vol.2, 121). Flynn (1913, 11) describes the monument and its setting on 'the extremity of a low spur to the east [of TS067-011001-] a strong little earthen fort has been constructed. The sides are very sharply scarped away and fosses and ramparts made where the fort touches the adjoining hills. There are traces of a garth to the rear of the hill-side from this fort. This earthwork is strong only towards the east, however. It is completely overlooked by the other two, and would be quite untenable if they were held by a hostile force', a plan and section is also included (ibid., 12, No.3). No visible trace as entire area of monument quarried. Depicted on first edition OS 6-inch map (1840-41) as two conjoined oval enclosures. Indicated as an oval area (dims. c. 18m N-S; c. 28m E-W) defined by a scarp on latest edition OS 6-inch map. Possible external fosse/outer scarp depicted NE-E-SSW. Larger sub-rectangular area (c. 55m N-S; c. 30m E-W) indicated and adjoins oval enclosure to W. According to the OS Letters (1840s) 'on top of Corroge Hill, at this place, is a moat which commands a very extensive view of all the country lying around it. It measures eighty four feet [25.6m] in diameter from east to west at top and about the same from north to south, which shews it to be circular in the strict sense of the word. It measures three hundred and eighteen feet [96.9m] in circumference at top and its height on east side from the base to the top slantwise is twenty two feet [6.7m] and on southwest side thirty feet [9.1m], which are its highest parts. A trench ran round its base, eight feet [2.4m] wide to the base of the foss[e.] The circumference at the base of the moat is four hundred and sixty five feet [141.7m]. The height of the foss[e] at trench-side from base to top is fourteen feet [4.2m] in the sourthwest part, where it is nearly level with the surface of the ground lying around it. Of the whole foss[e] there remain but two portions, beginning on sourth west side and running by west to northeast where it is destroyed for some distance. It continues again on northeast and east sides, where it will become very likely entirely effaced in a short time. It is totally destroyed on southeast, south and as far as southwest side[.] The height of the part on northwest side from base at trench to top is twelve feet [3.6m]. The top is almost on a level with the field outside it' (O'Flanagan 1930, vol.2, 121). Flynn (1913, 11) describes the monument as 'a large oval mound with fosse and rampart at both ends, but it is merely scarped away at the sides where the hill falls away. It is joined by a gangway to a large garth similarly defended by fosses and ramparts at both ends, but scarped away at the sides. There are traces of a large secondary garth adjoining the first down the hill-side to the east', a plan and section is also included (ibid., 12, No.1). Monument clearly visible on aerial photograph taken in 1966 (CUCAP 13 July 1966, APA 14) but had been badly damaged by quarrying by 1974 (GSI 16.4.1974, R. 516/515). Enclosure (TS067-011001-) c. 110m to NW, enclosure (TS067-011002-) c. 100m to N, church (TS067-011004-) and graveyard (TS067-011006-) c. 100m and c. 140m to NE respectively. Within the NE area of an active gravel quarry which is surrounded by undulating pasture. There is an enclosure (TS067-011001-) c. 110m to W, an enclosure (TS067-011002-) c. 60m to W and a motte and bailey (TS067-011003-) c. 100m to SW. A standing stone (TS067-011007-) is indicated on the 25-inch OS 6-inch map 20m to the NW. The church is not visible above ground level. The area of this monument is within the confines of the quarry and is presently covered by machinery. Depicted as a rectangular area defined by a perforated line and named 'site of Corroge Church' within 'graveyard' (TS067-01106-) on the 1st (1840) ed. OS 6-inch map. It is not depicted on the 2nd (1954) ed., but named 'Corroge Church (Cill Corrocha Cnamhchoille) (Site of)'. The 'Church of Curroge' is mentioned in the Civil Survey (1654-6) (Simington 1934, vol. 2, 40). According to the OS Letters (c. 1840) 'the site [of the church] measures sixty feet [18.2m] in length east and west and eighteen feet [5.4m] in breadth north and south, and lies on low ground. There is no burial here now and there are no graves observable in the place, but the extent used as burial ground is still visible surrounded by a ditch and yields grass now, as does also the site of the Church lying about the centre of it' (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 2, 120). The monument is clearly visible on an aerial photograph taken in 1966 (CUCAP 13 July 1966, APA 14) but by 1974 (GSI 16.4.1974, R. 516/515) the quarry had extended to the limits of the church. In Dinneen's dictionary (1927) 'Coirthe' means a stone, particularly a memorial stone and 'Tlachtgha' means 'a seat of early rights'. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
