In reclaimed grassland in shallow valley in upland region with good views to E and W, higher ground to N and S. Raised circular area/platform (approx. diam. 26m N-S) defined by a scarp (H 0.8-1.4m) and outer fosse (base Wth 2.5-3.5m; top Wth 5-7m; ext. D 0.4m) and later field boundary bank (base Wth 3.5m; top Wth 1.4m; ext. H 0.6m) the profile of which is sharp and 19th century in appearance. Large quarry (D 2m; dims. 30m N-S x 15m E-W) located in NE quadrant of ringfort and remainder of monument is covered in thorn bushes and scrub vegetation making detailed examination impossible. Land immediately to W has not been reclaimed and is wet and marshy while the land to the N and S has been reclaimed and has been re-seeded in grassland. The ringfort is intersected at N by a field boundary on an E-W axis and at E and W by two other field boundaries as depicted on the 1903 ed OS 6-inch map. Originally the ringfort was located in a wet marshy valley in an upland region with higher ground to N and S with the land being reclaimed about 15 years ago. Poorly preserved ringfort with a lot of damage caused by open cast quarrying of E quadrant of interior probably dating from the 19th century. Ringfort consists of a circular area (int. diam. 29m N-S; 32m E-W) enclosed by a well preserved earth and stone bank (top Wth 1.2m; base Wth 3.5m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 1.7m) and traces of an outer fosse (base Wth 3m; top Wth 6m; ext. D 0.4m) best preserved from N through S to E, with possible causewayed entrance gap (Wth 2m) at SE. Animal burrows in external face of bank at S causing damage to bank, interior planted with conifers in early 1900s. Hollow-way consists of a linear sunken depression (L 70m; top Wth 10m; base Wth 4m; D 1.7m) running NE-SW and terminated at NE and SW by field boundaries. Not indicated on 1843 ed. OS 6-inch map and may represent the remains of a trackway of 19th-century date running NE-SW. Onb first ed. OS 6-inch map there is small farm building indicated in S corner of field containing ringfort, trackway may have given access from building to main road to NE. In coniferous plantation on SE facing slope of poorly drained rising ground in upland region with good views to SE. Moated site (TS055-038----) 300m to NW. Unable to get access to enclosure because it is located inside mature coniferous plantation and no access road was kept open into the monument. Depicted as a circular enclosure on 1840 ed. According to the Civil Survey (1654-6) the glebeland of the parish of Crohane in 1640 consisted of 4 acres of arable land leased to the vicar of the parish of Croahane whose vicarage was described as 'totally wast' (Simington 1954, vol.2, 401). In grassland situated on low rise of ground overlooking small stream to S, in upland region, with holy well (TS055-041003-) 60m to the NW. A 19th-century C of I church is located on site of the earlier church, fragments of which have been incorporated into the wall of the graveyard (TS055-041002-), including a window head from a single-light ogee-headed window built into the external face of the SW angle. Other fragments from the medieval church area also visible in the wall and within the graveyard. It is depicted as 'Site of church' on the 1840 OS 6-inch map, with a school house, now destroyed, in the NE angle of the graveyard. Described by O'Donovan as the old church of Cruachan Magh Abhna (Crogan-Moy-Owney), of which only the foundations were visible in 1840 and which measured 28ft [8.53m] long by 22ft [6.7m] wide with walls 'built of slaty stones cemented with lime and sand mortar' (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 1, 153-4). The remains of two 17th-century graveslabs (TS055-041004- and TS055-041005-) are in the graveyard and a 16th/early 17th-century graveslab (TS055-041006-) is embedded in the floor of the porch of the C of I church. In grassland with church (TS055-041001-) and graveyard (TS055-041002-) located 60m to SE. No surface remains visible of well described by O'Donovan as a holy well named after the Virgin St Sinech, the patroness of Cruachan Moy-Owney but no stations have been performed at it these thirty years (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 1, 154). In grassland situated on low rise of ground overlooking small stream to S in upland region with holy well (TS055-041003-) 60m to the NW. 19th-century Church of Ireland church located in N quadrant of rectangular-shaped graveyard (int. dims. 59m N-S; 48m E-W), earlier church (TS055-041001-) fragments of which have been incorporated into the SW angle of the graveyard wall. Window head from a single-light ogee-headed window has been built into the external face of the SW angle of the graveyard wall, other fragments from the medieval church area also visible in the fabric of the graveyard wall. Two fragments of a medieval graveslab (TS055-041005-) were visible as supporting stones for a broken 18th-century memorial, immediately to the S of the C of I church there is a poorly preserved 17th-century graveslab (TS055-041004-) the inscription of which is now worn away. Current clean up scheme has removed the top sod from the graveyard with numerous broken 18th and 19th century headstones lying scattered around the graveyard, all vegetation has been burnt in the SW angle of the graveyard. Embedded in the floor of the porch of a 19th-century C of I church, which is located on the site of a medieval church (TS055-041001-). Only the upper portion of a rectangular limestone graveslab (Wth 0.7m; L 0.69m) is present. It is decorated in relief with an eight-armed interlace cross with fleur-de-lys terminals. The graveslab is broken, with a straight break, below the cross head, cutting across the lowest fleur-de-lys. There are two letters carved at the centre of the cross. The letters, which are positioned on their side, are quite worn and difficult to decipher. The first letter is adorned with an initial decorative carved knot. There is a plain raised border (Wth 0.065-0.07m) which is cut into by the fleur-de-lys at the cardinal points. There is a local tradition that the graveslab came from Lismalin church (TS055-067---) or graveyard (TS055-067001-) c. 4km to the SE. In reclaimed grassland on a NW-facing slope of hillock in undulating upland region with stream immediately to NW of possible moated site. Slight hollow depression marks the location of a possible moated site which has been levelled. Indicated as a small square-shaped earthwork on the 1840 ed. OS 6-inch map and not on the 1906 ed. Described in the Civil Survey (1654-6) as 'the castle of Crohane with the walls standing onely' with Thomas Butler of Kilconnell listed as proprietor in 1640 (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 129). In grassland on S facing slope of low E-W ridge in upland area overlooking river valley to S and higher ground to N. Monument consists of the poorly preserved fragmentary remains of a possible circular castle of which only portions of the E (Wall T 2.5m; L 2m ; H 2m) and S walls (L 1.4m; wall T 2.2m; H 1.5m) survives with partially destroyed garderobe chute visible in external face of E wall. The external and internal faces of the walls have been robbed out, however the wall-footings of the inner face of the S and E walls appear to curve to form a circular interior (possible int. diam./chord 5m from face of S wall to face of E wall, a max. possible diam of int. diam 7m) which suggests a possible circular-shaped castle. The fragmentary nature of the remains make it impossible to precisely identify or classify the castle. The walls were constructed of roughly coursed red sandstone rubble, no other features visible. Described by Curry in 1840 as a circular castle of which only the S and E walls survive with no visible remains of the foundations elsewhere with the diameter of the building measuring internally 21ft 6 inches [6.5m] and the walls 9 ft [2.75m] thick and 20 ft [6.1m] high, the first floor rested on an arch part of which only survives (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 1, 154). This account apprears to be describing a barrel vault over the ground floor. Depicted on the 1840-1 ed. OS 6-inch map as a circular tower house with adjoining field boundaries to N and S of castle which have subsequently been removed. These field boundaries were not indicated on the 1903 ed. OS 6-inch maps. Approx. 4m of the wall height has been lost between 1840 and 2004, no visible remains of barrel vault over the ground floor. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011

In improved pasture, overlooking a steady S-facing slope, with excellent views SSE-W including Slievenamon to S. A roughly circular area (dims. 14m E-W; 12m N-S) identified on an aerial photograph (ASIAP (361) 32-33, 10/05/2003) as a circular cropmark. It is defined by the remains of a barely traceable fosse (Wth c. 4.2m; D 0.05m) and a gentle rise SSE-WSW may indicate an outer bank. The interior is level. On a low NE-SW running ridge, overlooking a small dry valley to the immediate NW, in rough undulating pasture. A limestone standing stone (0.4m x 0.3m; H 1.7m) rectangular in plan and orientated NE-SW. The stone leans to the SW. It tapers to a sharp point at its apex and has an uneven surface covered with white and yellow lichens. There is a depression around the base of the stone due to cattle erosion. - Crohane Church, church/chapel, 1845–1850, Regional interest, registry number 22205514, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=TS&regno=22205514. Detached Church of Ireland church, built 1846-7, with three-bay nave elevations, chancel to east, entrance porch to west and sacristy to north. Pitched slate roof with ridge tiles, cut limestone copings, cast-iron rainwater goods and limestone eaves corbels. Cross finial to east gable and belfry with cast-iron bell to west gable. Roughly dressed sandstone walls with dressed limestone stepped corner buttresses, quoins and plinth course cappings. Chamfered cut limestone surrounds to all openings. Paired lancet windows to nave and single lancet to porch, with lattice glazing, three pointed arch windows to east elevation with stained glass and trefoil window to west gable. Shouldered door opening to sacristy with limestone steps and replacement timber door with cast-iron strap hinges. Pointed arch door opening to porch with block-and-start limestone surround having dressed voussoirs to arch and replacement timber door under hood-moulding. Recumbant and upstanding grave markers to graveyard. Rubble stone gates piers with wrought-iron gates to front of site.
