A brushwood point of yew was uncovered during the Irish Archaeological Wetland Unit (UCD) survey and a wooden shaft was discovered during excavation. Situated on flat bogland. A trackway (L 52m; Wth 3-10.8m) consisting of eight separate deposits of compacted small stones used intermittently where necessary to created a walking surface. In order to extend the life of the road it was supplemented with deposits of small split timbers and wood chips. The site appears to have been constructed after the bog burst of 1250 BC (Murray 1999, Derryfadda 17, 35-7) and has been radiocarbon dated to 1315-980 BC (Ó Néill 2000, 186). This site consisted of a trackway (L 15m; Wth 3-6.5m) formed by six clusters of roundwood and brushwood, orientated NW-SE which were intermittently deposited in areas where underfoot conditions dictated (Murray 1999, Derryfadda 204, 41-2). A felling date of 457 +/- 9 BC was obtained from one of the larger timbers in the track (Murray and Ó Néill 1999, 50). Situated on flat bogland with a togher (TN036-050052) overlying the site. The fulacht fia consisted of a timber-lined trough (dims. 2.4m x 1.75m x 0.6m), a hearth area (dims. L 1.2m; Wth 0.8m) and a mound (dims. 14m N-S x 19m E-W) of burnt material scattered over a wide area. From a technical assssment of the volume of the mound material the excavators suggested a possible figure of 400-500 firings over the life of the site (Murray and Ó Néill 1999, Derryfadda 216, 51-3).
