On flat ground in undulating terrain. Surrounded by pasture on E side and by tillage across the field bank immediately W of ringfort. Lisronagh tower house (TS077-010001-) and Donaghmore church (TS077-027001-) are visible to the SE and SW respectively. Circular area (diam. 35m N-S; 36.6m E-W) enclosed by a bank (Wth 2.5m crest, 4.3m base; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 2m) with a high stone content and wide outer fosse (Wth 3.2m; D 0.64m), waterlogged in the N sector. There is some scrub around the edges of the ringfort but the interior is relatively clear. However, it has been badly poached by cattle and there is evidence of a ring-feeder in the NE quad. Entrance in S quadrant (Wth 1.8m), no causeway over fosse, however this is the only candidate. It appears somewhat disturbed, perhaps widened. A field bank runs concentrically with the ringfort in the SW sector. Here there is no clear fosse but the ground is waterlogged at the external base of the bank. Formerly the field boundary also ran along the NW quadrant, only traces of this now survive. On a hill in undulating pasture. The settlement consists of a 12th-century church (TS077-027001-) and surrounding earthworks. The fields S, E and N of the graveyard have a number of earthen and stone banks which represent settlement. Main bank running roughly NE-SW and then turns E-W. Smaller plots to N of this main boundary at the W end of field. Area E of church has two roughly parallel banks (Wth 1m crest, 3m base; int. H 0.52m; ext. H 0.52m) running roughly N-S, may represent a roadway. However, the width of this possible roadway does not remain constant. On the E side, running up to E bank, there is the possible foundation of a rectangular building (dims. 4.2m x 8m) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 0.75m crest, 2.9m base; int. H 0.26m; ext. H 0.42m) with a curving annexe to N (dims. 5.7m x 5.75m). NE of the church there is a rectangular earthwork (dims. 5.5m N-S; 8m E-W) defined by a low, earth and stone bank (H above int. 0.18m; H above ext. 0.27m). Possible entrance in S bank, S side is more denuded. 5m W of this rectangular structure there are two parallel banks close to each other, only 0.9m apart, running E-W, turning sharply to S, parallel to W end of N wall of church. To the NE there is a circular pond (diam. c. 20m), it may be natural, other ponds show up on aerial photographs in fields to NW. There is a substantial field bank to N of the rectangular structure, it kinks out and appears to be avoiding the pond. There are slight traces of a bank around the rim of the pond. SW of the church there is a small field, immediately S of a modern boundary wall. The field (dims. 11.6m N-S; 12.8m E-W) is defined by an earth and stone bank (Wth 0.9m crest, 2.3m base; int. H 0.55m, ext. H 0.34m). The N and S bank are slightly lower than the E and W banks. No definable entrance. Another bank (Wth 1m crest, 3.9m base, int. H 0.63m; ext. H 1.06m) runs NE-SW S of the W end of the church, it has a slight sloping bern on its SE side. In the entire field immediately W of Donaghmore church there are numerous earthworks. A house was built c. 10 years ago in the NW corner of the field with driveway and surrounding garden, no earthworks survive in this area. On the SW edge of the summit of a hill, sloping quite steeply to S, level to N, and with gradual slope to E and W, in undulating terrain. The church was dedicated to St. Farannan who exiled himself to the Continent and died at Valcoidon, renamed Waser on the Meuse, in 982 (Burke 1896, 24; Harbison 1970, 226). It became a National Monument in 1883 when the Commissioners of Public Works took charge of the ruin and 'under the judicious care of Sir Thomas Deane, such repairs were effected as are likely to preserve it for ages to come' (Burke 1896, 25). There are earthworks in the adjoining field to N. A nave (int. dims. 7.2m x 12m; wall T 1m) and chancel (int. dims. 2.6m x 2.5m; wall T 1.11m) church, constructed of limestone masonry rubble, randomly coursed, with some quite large boulders incorporated in the masonry. The architectural details and quoins are of sandstone. The walls and steep gables survive to a good height. The church is entered through a centrally placed doorway in the W gable. Three orders survive and are decorated with roll-mouldings, chevrons with beaded and moulded ornament and vegetal ornament, described by Leask (1977, 137) and Harbison (1976, 56-7). Above the doorway are the remains of a projecting tangental tympanum, most of the decorative elements of which are broken out. The OS Letters (1840s) refer to a tympanum or 'a stone inserted in the wall over this doorway exhibiting the figure of a cat with two tails sculptured upon it, the work of the celebrated Irish Saint and Artifex, the Gobaun Saer. This stone is said to have been stolen by Cashel Car-men, who carried it to Holycross' (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 1, 53). The nave is lit by a central round-headed single light in the N wall and two round-headed single lights in the S wall, with a later flat-headed single-light window inserted at the E end of the N wall. In the nave, immediately S of the doorway, a square stoup (dims. 0.2m x 0.2m; H 0.2m) with circular bowl (diam. 0.16m) has been inserted into the wall. Remains of internal render are visible on all internal walls. The chancel arch, comprised of three orders, has largely collapsed, with plain engaged columns surviving with their capitals and bases decorated with vegetal ornamentation. Coping stones project internally inside the steep angle of the E gable on both N and S sides, indicating a shallower incline than the present gable. The barrel-vaulted chancel is lit by a round-headed single-light window in the centre of the W wall. At the E end of the N wall there is a rectangular aumbry. A flat-headed doorway has been inserted at the W end of the N wall, the threshold of which is raised 0.6m above the interior. There is a lintelled recess in the S wall of the chancel (L c. 0.74m; H 0.32m; D 0.68m; 1.1m above int.). An inaccessible chamber above the chancel was formally entered from the nave, possibly via a wooden stairs in the NE angle which led to the doorway above the chancel arch. This chamber was lit by a round-headed single light in the E gable. Externally on the N and S walls of the nave are a series of water spouts with drain-holes at the base of the parapet. The parapet, built at a later phase, rises c. 0.8m above the water spouts. At the E end of the S wall of the nave, a section of parapet, defined by quoins, projects out from the wall face. A medieval graveslab (TS077-027005-) lies in the interior of the nave and another (TS077-027006-) has been placed upright in the graveyard. Immediately SE of Donaghmore church (TS077-027001-) there was a second church. The OS Letters of 1840 relate that the church was 'destroyed years ago by Parson Carey, who used its stones to build pig styes!' (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 1, 54). Within the graveyard, SE of the upstanding church, there is a circular depression (diam. 6m N-S; 5.8m E-W) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 1.3m crest, 3.2m base; int. H 0.63m; ext. H 0.56m). On summit of a hill, at SW edge of summit, gradual slopes, quite steeply to S, level to N, gradual slope to E and W. Long rectangular undulating graveyard (dims. 38m N-S; 83m E-W) with Romanesque church (TS077-027001-) located at the W end and immediately SE of this there was another church (TS077-027002-). There are earthworks (TS077-027003-) in the adjoining field to N. Ground level has been quarried out immediately S of the nave wall of the Romanesque church resulting in a steep-sided rectangular hollow with a stone revetment at base of its steep sides. Donaghmore church (TS077-027001-) was dedicated to St. Farannan who exiled himself to the Continent and died at Valcoidon, renamed Waser on the Meuse in 982 (Burke 1896, 24; Harbison 1970, 226). Lying in the nave is a graveslab (max. L c. 1.58m; max. Wth 0.48m; min. Wth 0.42m; T 0.1m), broken into three fragments, tapering slightly towards base. Portion of sinister side of graveslab is missing. Decorated with a three armed cross, terminated with trefoils with single cross-bands separating these from the arms (Maher 1997, 55). A pair of such banks divides the cross-head from the shaft and another, single, example occurs at the base of the shaft surmounting a pillar-base form (ibid.). Raised plain boarder (Wth 0.08m), no evidence of lettering. Edge of slab has a slight chamfer 0.02m wide. Based on comparitive sylistic evidence Maher (ibid. 25) suggests a late 14th/15th-century date for this graveslab. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011

Donaghmore church (TS077-027001-) was dedicated to St. Farannan who exiled himself to the Continent and died at Valcoidon, renamed Waser on the Meuse in 982 (Burke 1896, 24; Harbison 1970, 226). In the graveyard (TS077-027004-) there is a slightly tapered sandstone graveslab (L 1m; top Wth 0.44m; base Wth 0.42m; T 0.12m) with chamfered edges which is set upright in concrete. The upper portion of the slab is decorated with an equal-armed cross with bifid terminal, in relief, within a sunken circular area. On either side of the cross shaft there is a plain rectangular panel with bifid top (Maher 1997, 55-6). A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
