Imleach Iobhair or Emly grew from its origins as an Early Christian monastery, founded by St. Ailbe who died on the 12th of September (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 3, 38-60). According to the Annals of the Four Masters this monastic foundation was pillaged twice and burnt five times between the 11th and 12th century, as well as earlier in 845 (ibid.). Cashel became an archbishopric and much of the territory given to Cashel was at Emly's expense, thus Emly ceased to be one of the wealthier monasteries in Munster (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 77-8, 360). In 1215 the English bishop of Emly was granted permission by King John to hold an annual fair and the bishop's weekly market was not to be disturbed (O'Dwyer and O'Dwyer 1987, 1-29). In 1303 AD a murage charter was granted to the town. In 1505-42 Bishop Thomas Hurley founded a college of secular priests at the cathedral (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 77-8, 360). By 1569 the monastery was united with the see of Cashel, a factor which further precipitated the decline of the monastic town of Emly (ibid.). In 1718 the Catholic bishopric joined with Cashel (O'Dwyer, M and L. 1987, 1-29). In 1303 a charter of murage was granted to the town of Emly and a map dating to 1599 (map of Munster held in T.C.D.) depicts Emly as a walled town with two gates. No physical evidence of this wall survives. In 1622 the Archbishop of Cashel visited Emly where he reported there were two castles, the 'great and the small', one of which had been the residence of the Bishop of Emly. In the 5th century a monastery was founded at Emly by St. Ailbe. In 1058 the Annals of the Four Masters record that the daimhliag or great stone church and the cloictheach or round tower and belfry of Emly were burnt (Barrow 1979, 190). The monastery at Emly was surrounded by a circular enclosure centering on the main ecclesiastical elements. The outline of this enclosure is preserved today in the road and field pattern S of the present catholic church. The line of the enclosure commences at the road junction in Emly, where the road curves from NW through to SW, a field boundary, meeting the road at the SW, continues the circle to the NW. The western half of this enclosure is not immediately apparent but the river may have acted as the enclosing element on this side and there is no surface remains of the enclosure to the N and E of the town. According to the OS letters the early cathedral was on the site of the present cathedral (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 3, 39-60), however, other references and the OS 6-inch maps indicate that the pre-1700 cathedral was situated on the W side of the present graveyard. Only some architectural fragments of the cathedral survive in the graveyard. In 1058 the Annals of the Four Masters record that the daimhliag or great stone church and the cloictheach or round tower and the belfry of Emly were burnt (Barrow 1979, 190). By 1607 the cathedral was totally ruined and four years later the clergy and laity of the diocese were ordered to repair it at their own expense. (O'Dwyer and O'Dwyer 1987, 1-16). However, by 1615 only the chancel had been rebuilt (ibid.). A sketch of the buildings drawn in 1680 shows that although the cathedral was roofed a number of monastic buildings to the S were in a ruinous state (ibid.). In the 1827 a new cathedral was built to the S of St. Ailbe's well as indicated on the 1st edition OS 6-inch map, however, this was dismantled in 1877 and the stones were taken to build a church in Monard (ibid.). In the NE quadrant of the graveyard. This is traditionally known as St. Ailbe's well. The circular well is now covered in mass concrete, 0.4m above the ground and 1.92m in diameter. There is a square aperture in the concrete, 0.28m wide, which gives very limited access to the well water. Originally the well was a circular well (int. diam. 1.2m; D 5.2m) with dry stone walling on top of which was placed a cut stone limestone surround of 19th century date. According to the OS Letters(O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 3, 40) the stone shaft of the wall is c. 7m deep. Traditionally this holy well was visited on the feast day of St. Ailbe, the 12th of September. In 1898 the well was still being used to supply the village with water (Long 1898, 173-4). The head of the cross is 0.57m wide, the side arms are very short, only projecting out 3cm. The west and east faces of the cross differ slightly in that the east face is more of a latin cross while the arms of the west face are thicker and do not have differentiated terminals (Harbison 1992, 87). The rock is partly supported by smaller stones and water appears to be visible through a small gap in the stone. The well (D 0.7m; int. diam. 1.80m) itself appears to be enclosed by a circular dry-stone wall of which three courses are visible with a possible corbelled roof all of which is built with local sandstone rubble. The well appears to have been built at the base of a large rock outcrop of red sandstone (H 1.20m; L 4m; Wth 1.1m). This may have been a medieval church built from the fabric of the cathedral or it may have been the church which was built in the 19th century. Armorial stone (dims. 0.9m x 0.73m) incorporated into the N face of the N boundary wall of Emly graveyard near the W end of the RC church beside a 17th-century memorial plaque (TS065-013013-). It was formerly in the wall of the medieval cathedral (TS065-013002-), was removed to Monard church after the cathedral had been demolished and was returned to Emly after the church at Monard was demolished in 1960 (O'Dwyer and O'Dwyer 1987, 16). This stone carries the arms of the Hurley family. The shield bears a bend charged with two mullets and a hand, between six crosses patee. Above the shield there is a closed helmet in profile from which a garland issues forth. The helmet is surmounted by what appears to be a bird, close, in profile with a cross patee on it's breast. Beneath the shield there is a latin motto in Roman Capitals which reads: DEXTRA CRUCE VINCET, this translates as : My right hand conquers by the cross (Fairbairn 1984). This wall monument of black marble, which measures 1.22m x 0.65m, has a latin inscription written in Roman Capitals. The inscription, as transcribed by Shirley (1864-6, 286-7), reads, 'PERILLUSTRIS DNUS DNUS MAURITIUS HURLAEUS ARMIGER MONUMENTUM HOC SIBI SUISQ' CHARISSIMIS CONJUGIBUS GRAINAE HOGANAE & GRACIAE THORNETONAE TOTIQUE POSTERITATI POSUIT ELABORARIQUE FECIT. This has been translated into english (Davis White 1892, 105-111) as follows, 'The Most Illustrious Maurice Hurley E.q. erected this monument to his own memory and that of his dearly beloved wives Graina Hogan and Grace Thornton, and all his posterity A D, 1632. Here lies the pillar of hospitality and the home of affection, Renowned for his talents, and remarkable for his eloquence, the glory of his country, suppressor of all strife a lover of peace. The rule of Justice, the model of piety. Hurley was an enemy to enemies to friends. Maurice adjusted things according to the times, The torch of faith the support of the afflicted, a jewel amongst men. The glory of his ancient stock, In him was worth and probity, blessed with a faultless body, in himself he …… a thousand gifts of nature. …….Thou hadst lived happy in this world, mayest thou live happy forever - happy in fortune and in a noble progeny. It may have come from the medieval cathedral (TS065-013002-) or may be a window head from one of the unlocated castles within Emly. In its present location it acts as the head of a rough stoup which has been inserted into the thickness of the NE gable. D 0.1m), with two luggs (Wth 0.14m each), is roughly shaped, not symmetrical. The shaft (L 0.3m) rests on a stepped base, beneath the cut step, which is c. 5cm deep, the base, 0.25m deep, is crudely finished. The inscription roughly translates as 'The place wherein you enter is holy ground' (pers. comm. Gerard Crotty). The name at the bottom of the inscription belongs to a Robert Jones who became the Precentor of Emly cathedral in 1628 (O'Dwyer and O'Dwyer 1987, 16). On a gentle W-facing slope within the NW quadrant of an ecclesiastical enclosure (TS065-013001-) at Emly. This burial ground was discovered during the construction of a housing development on the NW side of the village. St Peter’s well (TS065-013005-) lies c. 30m to the NW. Burials were uncovered in two areas, an area of 96m2 to the W of houses 1 and 2 and an area of 36m2 for a sewage trench 25m to the SSW of the former. A total of 102 E-W aligned burials were excavated, consisting of 63 adults and 39 juveniles. All the graves were earth-cut and there were no traces of wooden coffins, only two nails were found in burials. Within the larger area excavated three phases of burial were noted. The earliest phase is likely to be early medieval in date and therefore possibly associated with the monastery. Burials which were identified as being later in date appear to be of children and thus it has been suggested that after the burial ground had gone out of general use it continued to be used as a children’s burial ground. A number of ditches, pits, post-holes and metalled surfaces were uncovered during archaeological excavation prior to the construction of a housing development on the NW side of the village. A burial ground (TS065-013019-) was discovered c. 20-40m to the N and St Peter’s well (TS065-013005-) lies c. 40m to the W. Three phases of activity were identified during the excavation. An enclosure (TS065-013021-) is associated with the earliest pre-13th century phase. A large number of pits and ditches are associated with 13th/14th century pottery. According to the excavator (Henry 2003, 33) a large linear, gently sloping, flat-bottomed ditch (Wth 1.2m; D 0.75m), running N-S for 17m, may enclose some medieval features to the W. A series of post-holes extend N-S c. 10m to the S of this linear ditch. These have been interpreted as a possible fence line, possibly of medieval date. Other features, interpreted as furrows and field drains have been dated to the post 1600 period, including a round-ditched structure which may have been constructed from turf sods, this structure has no entrance, hearth or occupation layer. Detached east-facing cruciform-plan gable-fronted Gothic Revival Catholic church, built 1880. Comprising five-bay nave with four-bay side aisles, four-stage bell tower with spire to south and sacristy to southwest. Elaborate composition to entrance front links portal doorway and rose window above. Pitched slate roof with clay ridge cresting, limestone cross finials, cast-iron rainwater goods, cut limestone eaves course to east end of nave and carved limestone eaves brackets to west and to projections. Pyramidal slate roof to tower with louvres and cross finial. Carved limestone chimneystack to sacristy. Rock-faced snecked polychrome limestone walls with cut limestone plinth course and having stepped buttresses to main corners and between nave windows. Cut limestone platbands to transepts. Ashlar limestone walls to top stage of tower and to portal. Triple lancet window openings with rose windows above to transepts, cinquefoil windows to clerestory with raised moulded surrounds, pointed arch five-light window with geometrical limestone tracery and pointed double lights to chancel. Rose window to front elevation set into round-arch recess with ornate keystone, latter supporting projecting base of pointed arch recess with statue of Saint Ailbe, and having carved moulded archivolt flanked by colonettes with dressed stone capitals. Pointed-arch two-light window openings with cinquefoil lights above and flanked by colonnettes with floral capitals to front elevation of side aisles and slightly-pointed three-light window openings with hood-mouldings to side aisles. Tower has lancet windows to second and top stages of tower and pointed arcade with recessed square-headed loops to third. All windows having chamfered cut limestone surrounds and stained glass. Entrance portal consists of slightly-pointed recess under shallow moulded gabled canopy with animal stops and vegetal finial and having sculpted tympanum with trefoil-arched recesses with statues over pair of square-headed door openings, latter having moulded architraves, carved recessed shoulders and timber battened doors flanked by colonnettes with dove and floral motif to capitals. Colonnettes support decorative archivolt to tympanum and all flanked in turn by second pair of colonnettes which continue upward to support archivolt of overall composition. Pointed-arch door openings to north transept porch and tower with moulded carved limestone archivolts surrounds under hood-mouldings to recessed timber battened doors having ornate strap hinges and limestone steps. Interior has ornate sculpted marble main and side aisle reredoses with gabled arcade motif and crocketed ends with statues. Pointed hood-moulded arcades to side aisles with human head stops over clustered marble columns with vegetal capitals. Decorative marble gallery over entrance end of nave supported on arcade of brown marble columns. Timber scissors truss roof with braces supported on ornate corbels linked by moulded string courses. Freestanding sandstone water font to door possibly reused medieval artifacts. Snecked limestone boundary wall and gate piers to front of site with wrought-iron gate. Dressed snecked limestone and sandstone walls with dressed limestone quoins. Square-headed window openings with replacement uPVC windows having painted sills and render surrounds and pointed arch window opening to west elevation with dressed limestone voussoirs and replacement uPVC window. Square-headed door opening with replacement timber door having rendered canopy partly supported on carved bracket. Octagonal dressed limestone gate piers to graveyard with carved caps and string courses and having cast-iron gates with spearhead motif. Detached five-bay two-storey over half-basement former glebe house, built 1782-4, with gabled projecting two-storey porch and having lower shallow gabled three-storey return and single-storey extension to rear. Now in use as house. Pitched slate roof with rendered chimneystacks and cast-iron rainwater goods. Roughcast rendered walls. Square-headed window openings with one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows with tooled limestone sills. Tall square-headed twelve-over-twelve pane and three-over-three pane timber sash windows to return, with some segmental-arched windows to basement at rear of main block. Square-headed door opening with timber panelled door accessed via limestone steps to side of porch, and square-headed door opening with timber panelled door having console brackets and cornice to rear extension. Ranges of outbuildings attached to ends of rear of house to form courtyard. Rubble sandstone walls and pitched slate roofs, having timber louvered vent, redbrick surrounds to doorway and segmental-arch opening to southwest range and rubble limestone walls with hipped slate roof to two-storey west range, with square-headed window and door openings and segmental-arch openings with cut limestone surrounds. Freestanding cast-iron pump to yard.
