On a S-facing slope of rising ground in upland area with good views in all directions. Ring-barrow (TS049-031----) and burial mound (TS049-032----) 138m and 260m to E respectively. No surface remains visible, field recently ploughed and reseeded with grass. In the early 1900s several burials were uncovered whilst ploughing the field at a depth of 2 and a half feet [0.76m] below the surface of the ground, these burials were left untouched and were covered over (NMI Topographical Files). Well-preserved ring-barrow consisting of a flat-topped mound (diam. 3m E-W; H 0.2m; overall diam. 11.5m N-S; 10m E-W) enclosed by an inner fosse (Wth 2m; ext. D 0.2m) and outer bank (top Wth 1.6m; base Wth 2.3m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 0.4m) which intersected at S on an E-W axis. Mound is overgrown with gorse bushes. On top of high reclaimed pasture in upland area with good extensive views. Nearby ring-barrow (TS049-031----) and burials (TS049-030----) 124m and 260m to the W respectively. Natural hillock which has been scarped to form a low elongated mound (diam. 25m N-S; 35m E-W-; H 1m) with no enclosing bank or fosse visible. In wet poorly drained grassland, situated on N facing slope of NE-SW ridge in the Slieveardagh hills with good views in all directions. Overgrown but well-preserved monument consisting of a slightly raised circular area (approx. diam. 20m N-S; 25m E-W) enclosed by and earth and stone bank (top Wth 2m; base Wth 4m; ext. H 0.6m; int. H 0.10m). No clear evidence of an outer fosse or entrance feature. Perimeter of enclosure covered in furze bushes making detailed examination impossible. This is a 19th-century house associated with the 1848 rebellion. Here the Young Ireland insurgents under the leadership of the Protestant aristocrat, William Smith O’Brien, M.P., besieged 47 police who had barricaded themselves into the McCormack farmhouse taking five children hostage. After a siege lasting many hours which resulted in a number of deaths among the insurgents, police reinforcements arrived and the attacking force retreated. In consequence of this action the house became known locally as the ‘Warhouse’. The house is a National Monument in State care and contains exhibits on the history of the Famine and mass emigration, the rebellion, high treason trials and penal exile of the Young Ireland leaders in Australia and their escapes to the USA. - The Warhouse, house, 1840–1850, Regional interest, registry number 22204909, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=TS&regno=22204909. Detached three-bay two-storey former house, built c. 1845, with central gablet to front elevation, and single-storey lean-to addition to south gable, now in use as museum. Pitched slate roof with eaves course and rendered chimneystacks. Roughcast rendered walls. Square-headed openings with replacement timber double sliding sash two-over-six pane windows and having replacement timber panelled door with upper glazed panel. Door and only three windows to rear elevation. Multiple-bay single-storey outbuildings to rear have pitched slate and barrel corrugated-iron roofs, unpainted rendered walls, and square-headed openings.
