H 0.6m) with faint traces of an outer fosse visible in places. There is a possible entrance (Wth 1.5m) at the ENE, now used as a cattle gap. The outline of an outer fosse is barely visible as a slight depression. There is a possible moated site (TS042-020----) 320m to the E. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011 - TS042-020: Moated site, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CTS042-020----. In flat pasture with a ruinous farmhouse immediately to the SW and a field boundary to the E. A rectangular area (dims. NE-SW 34.5m; approx. N-S 37.4m; E L 38m; S L 34.5m; W L 26m) enclosed by an earth and stone bank (base Wth 4m; top Wth 2.3m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 1.1m-0.9m) destroyed all along its N side but elsewhere fully intact and a wide flat-bottomed outer fosse (base Wth 3.6m; top Wth 5m; ext. D 0.4m) which is partially filled along the S side and destroyed from the S through W to the N. The fosse is best preserved along the E side where there is a causewayed entrance (Wth 3.6m) which has good evidence of stone facing. Farm buildings and laneway which are depicted on the 1st (1840) ed. OS 6-inch map are built into the external face of the SW bank which has resulted in the destruction of the enclosing fosse on this side. On the 1st (1840) ed. OS 6-inch map the monument is depicted as a rectangular enclosure which is fully intact, however on the 2nd (1903) ed. the N side has been removed. There are cattle gaps in the S bank. On top of high ground in pasture at the N end of a N-S ridge with good commanding views in all directions. Fennor church and castle (TS043-003----) are located 500m and 625m to the SSE respectively. A heavily overgrown bivallate enclosure consisting of a raised circular platform (diam. c. 22-30m; overall diam. c. 100m NW-SE) defined by a scarp (H 4-5m), fosse (top Wth 8m; base Wth 3m; ext. D 1.75m), wide flat-topped earth and stone bank (top Wth 6m; base Wth 10m; ext. H 2m), external fosse (base Wth 2m; top Wth 5m: ext. D 1m) and outer bank (base Wth 10m; top Wth 2.5m; ext. H 1.7m). The central platform is covered in bushes and trees making detailed examination and measurement impossible. The middle bank is level in height with the central platform and higher than the outer bank and has evidence of a stone revetment along its inner face in the E quadrant. There are possible stone wall-footings around the perimeter of the platform at the E quadrant which would make the monument a trivallate earthwork. There is evidence of quarrying in the NW quadrant and a modern cattle gap (Wth 2.2m) in the platform at the ENE, but no corresponding gap in the middle bank. It was described by Healy (1874-9, vol. 1, 49) in the 19th century as a 'beautiful rath near Fennor Church some 45 yards in diameter, surrounded with fosse, rampart and parapet.' A church at Fennor is mentioned in the late 13th century and in 1302 John de Fresingfeld got royal permission to hold a weekly fair at Fennor (McCormack, 1989, 12). A small settlement comprising Fennor castle (TS043-003001-), church (TS043-003003-) and three houses are depicted on the mid-17th century Down Survey map. It is located on top of high ground, in pasture, with good views in all directions. The castle is located to the NE and the church and graveyard (TS043-003004-) to the SW. There are barely visible undulating earthworks in the field between Fennor church and castle but no discernible pattern is visible. The presence of rock outcrop close to the ground surface further complicates attempts at interpretation. The Civil Survey (1654-6) describes 'The Castle and Bawne of Fenor inhabited' as 'a good castle' with Pierce Butler listed as proprietor of the lands in 1640 (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 101, 120). It is situated on high ground, in pasture, with good views in all directions. A church (TS043-003003-) and graveyard (TS043-003004-) are located 130m to the SW. The castle and associated bawn (TS043-003002-) are not visible at ground level. The castle is described in the OS Letters as 'a high but slender fragment ….Only a part of the north and west walls of this building remains, five feet ten inches [1.8m] in thickness and about forty feet [12m] in height' (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 1, 160). According to the OS Letters a house was built at the foot of the castle by the Turvin family which appears to have been abandoned in the early 1700s (ibid.). The bawn is described in the OS Letters as 'the remains of outer walls are also visible but they do not appear to be as old as the castle itself' (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 1 160). Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011 - TS043-003003: Church, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CTS043-003003-. On top of high ground with good views in all directions. A castle (TS043-003001-) and holy well (TS043-002----) are located 130m and 820m to the NE respectively. The church at Fennor is mentioned in the Papal Taxation of 1291 and there are references to several vicars in the late 13th century (McCormack, 1989, 12). In the Civil Survey (1654-6) Pierce Butler is listed as proprietor of the lands of Fennor and it mentions the church which had four acres of glebeland with a cabin and a garden belonging to the vicar (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 120). The church (ext. dims N-S 26.9m ; E-W 8.9m; wall T 0.8m-1.2m) consists of a nave (int. dims. N-S 7.2m; E-W 8.2m) and chancel (int. dims E-W 9m; N-S 5.3m) with a tower, perhaps a belfry, over the E end of the chancel. There is a two-storey house at the W end of the nave with the remains of a structure at the E end of its N wall which may have been a two-storey porch (ext. dims. 3.3m; possible int. dims. 1.9m N-S; 1.7m E-W). All are composed of roughly coursed limestone rubble. The church was entered by two opposing doorways in the N and S walls at the W end of the nave. Both doorways are now missing though the original draw-bar slots are still visible. One of the doorways (TS043-050----) may have been removed and inserted as an entrance into the walled garden of nearby Glebe House. The chancel arch (Wth 2.75m) consists of a cut limestone pointed arch. There are two pairs of opposing shallow, pointed embrasures (Wth 2.45m; D 0.8m) in the N and S walls of the chancel, the embrasures 1.4m apart in both pairs, which may have been sedilia for the choir. There is evidence of a blocked-up ope in the W embrasure of the S wall and good evidence for internal whitewash render in the chancel. A mural stairs accessed from the E splay of the E embrasure in the S wall gives access to a tower located over the E window. The tower is supported on a vault which springs over the destroyed E window. Two corbels in the SE angle of the chancel may have supported a timber shelf or functioned as a support for statues. There is a flat-headed aumbry in the centre of the E embrasure in the N wall of the chancel and a second aumbry in the NE angle of the chancel. The E window is completely broken out, only the outer splay of both sides of its embrasure survives. A 15th-century graveslab (TS043-003005-), which is no longer visible, had been recorded in the chancel (Healy 1874-9, vol. 1, 49). The ground floor of the priest's house consists of two parallel barrel-vaulted chambers which are interconnected by a doorway E of centre in the dividing spine wall. There is a probable window in the centre of the W wall of both chambers and good evidence of wicker-centring under each of the vaults. The W gable of the larger N chamber (int. dims. N-S 3.6m x E-W 6.2m) has been repointed, widened and converted into a pointed arched opening. This chamber was originally accessed from the W end of the nave by a doorway, now blocked up. Directly inside this doorway there was a small lobby from which a stairs accessed the upper chamber, now blocked up. This upper chamber had a window in the W gable and two windows in the N and S walls, both of which are now broken out. The chamber to the S is inaccessible due to the blocked-up door from the larger N chamber. The upper floor of the house could also have been accessed from the porch. There is a cut limestone window jamb in the E wall at first-floor level of the porch. Only the E and W wall returns (wall T 0.8m) survive, projecting out for a distance of 0.2m. This medieval graveslab was mentioned by O'Donovan as a tombstone in the chancel of Fennor church (TS43-003003-) with a latin inscription around its edges (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 1 160). It is described by Healy (1874, 47-9) as 'a monumental slab six and a half feet long [2m] and two feet wide [0.75 m], with a beautiful floriated cross upon it, accompanied by the following inscription, all in relief: Hic jacet honorabil. ac discret, Th Ulawnaim Cleric Casselln dioc ac quonda magist. On flat pasture in undulating countryside with good views in all directions. An enclosure (TS043-004----) is located 600m to the N. A D-shaped enclosure (dims. c. 80m N-S; c. 60m E-W) is depicted on the 1st (1840) ed. OS 6-inch map. It is not visible at ground level. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011 - TS043-050: Architectural fragment, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CTS043-050----. In the W wall of a walled garden, immediately S of Glebe House. A pointed limestone doorway (Wth 0.97m; H 1.85m; T 0.25m) of 15th/16th-century date with chamfered surround (Wth 0.1m) terminating on the N with a point (angled runout stop) and on the S with a broach stop. There is a small depression (H 0.08m; Wth 0.045m; D 0.02m) on the inner rebate of the doorway which probably held a locking mechanism. The doorway is not in its original position and is most likely to have come from the medieval church of Fennor (TS043-0003003-) which is visible c. 180m to the E, where both opposing doorways in the N and S wall are missing. The doorway appears to have been faithfully reconstructed and is in good condition, though the top S voussoir has slipped slightly out of position.
